[Incongruous, incomplete, homonymous hemianopia due to an infarction localized to the lateral geniculate body].

A 45-year-old male was admitted with an acute-onset visual field defect. Goldmann perimetry revealed an incongruent, incomplete right homonymous hemianopia. The left eye showed a wedge-shaped, horizontal right hemianopia, whereas the right eye showed constriction of the right visual hemifield. MRI showed acute infarction localized to the left lateral geniculate body (LGB). LGB has a dual blood supply: from the anterior choroidal artery and from the lateral posterior choroidal artery (LPChA). The LPChA territory of LGB receives projection from the retinal area around the macula and horizontal m

Deep brain stimulation of the medial geniculate body for refractory tinnitus: A feasibility study.

Tinnitus disorder can have a significant negative impact on quality of life, especially when refractory to standard care. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the medial geniculate body (MGB) attenuates pathological neuronal activity in the central auditory pathway and is a potential treatment for severe tinnitus. The aim of this pilot study was to assess the safety and feasibility of bilateral MGB DBS in patients with refractory tinnitus disorder. This randomised double-blind 2 × 2 cross-over study was conducted at Maastricht University Medical Centre, Maastricht, the Netherlands. The included p

Transcriptional-profile changes in the medial geniculate body after noise-induced tinnitus.

OBJECTIVES: Although in scleroderma renal crisis (SRC) outcome has improved to a great extent with the introduction of ACE inhibitors, there remains significant mortality and morbidity with frequent requirement for renal replacement therapy. Therefore, novel biomarkers to identify patients at high risk of poor outcome would be valuable. The aim of this study was to assess the role of the N terminal fragment of pro Brain Natriuretic Peptide (N-TproBNP) as predictor of outcome in SRC. METHODS: 20 subjects with confirmed SRC were retrospectively enrolled. Clinical data, full blood count, creatin

Inhibition of Experimental Tinnitus With High Frequency Stimulation of the Rat Medial Geniculate Body.

BACKGROUND: Neuromodulation is a promising treatment modality for tinnitus, especially in chronic and severe cases. The auditory thalamus plays a key role in the pathophysiology of tinnitus, as it integrates and processes auditory and limbic information. OBJECTIVE: The effect of high frequency stimulation and low frequency stimulation of the medial geniculate bodies on tinnitus in a noise-induced tinnitus rat model is assessed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Presence of tinnitus was verified using the gap-induced prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle response paradigm. Hearing thresholds were …

[Lateral geniculate body presenting only hemorrhage homonymous hemianopia-A case report].

We report a case of a 55-year-old man who developed acute-onset narrowing of his visual field. He showed right homonymous hemianopsia without any other neurological symptoms and signs. Brain CT and MRI showed localized hemorrhage (about 1.6 ml) in the left lateral geniculate body (LGB). A cerebral angiography showed no vascular anomalies of cerebral vessels, and the left anterior choroidal artery and left lateral posterior choroidal artery could be visualized well. He had hypertension, polycythemia and dyslipidemia and was a habitual smoker and an alcoholic. In the literature, various kinds of

[A case of brain infarction of lateral geniculate body showing strange formed scotomas].

A 58-year-old woman suddenly noticed that soccer players disappeared and emerged in right inferior portion of her vision while she was watching soccer game on TV. She was admitted in our hospital on the day 9. Goldman perimeter revealed strange formed hemianopic soctomas which located at right side of her both visual fields. Brain MRI scan showed a tiny infarction in left lateral geniculate body. No abnormalities were found on cerebral angiography and 24 hours holter ECG study. Transesophageal echocardiography and transcranial Doppler study showed the presence of intracardiac right-to-left shu

[Morphometric analysis of the dorsal lateral geniculate body of the laboratory mouse and microphthalmic variants].

The dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) of the mouse (strain 944 with microphthalmus syndrome, P. Hertwig 1942) has been morphometrically investigated. The eyes of the gray littermates develop normally (control animals) while the white littermates show the microphthalmus syndrome (microphthalmic animals). Four male twentyone day old animals were examined. Following perfusion with formaldehyde (diluted 1:4 with H2O) Nissl stained frontal sections were used for classification of neurons. we differentiate between projection neurons (PN) (geniculo-cortical relay neurons) and interneurons (IN)

Neuroglial activation in the auditory cortex and medial geniculate body of salicylate-induced tinnitus rats.

Neuroglial activation has been recognized as a pathological hallmark of a variety of neurological diseases, yet the role of neuroglia in tinnitus hasn't been well established so far. To explore the potential roles of two types of glia cells (astrocyte and microglia) in the development of tinnitus, we examined markers associated with them in the primary auditory (A1) cortex and medial geniculate body (MGB) of rats with salicylate-induced tinnitus. The results demonstrated that acute and chronic administrations of salicylate could cause reversible tinnitus-like behavior in rats. The expression l

Bursts in the medial geniculate body: a comparison between anesthetized and unanesthetized states in guinea pig.

Thalamic high frequency bursts have long been described under anesthesia and during slow-wave sleep (SWS). More recently, studies in the lateral geniculate nucleus have pointed out that they are also present during waking (W). Here, we compared the bursts recorded in the medial geniculate body of guinea pigs under anesthesia or during periods of W and SWS. The tuning of single units was tested between threshold and 80 dB SPL in two conditions: (1) in restrained, undrugged, non-sleep-deprived guinea pigs (n=101 cells) and (2) under pentobarbital anesthesia (n=53 cells). Off-line analyses allowe

Noise-induced cell death in the mouse medial geniculate body and primary auditory cortex.

Noise-induced effects within the inner ear have been well investigated for several years. However, this peripheral damage cannot fully explain the audiological symptoms in noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), e.g. tinnitus, recruitment, reduced speech intelligibility, hyperacusis. There are few reports on central noise effects. Noise can induce an apoptosis of neuronal tissue within the lower auditory pathway. Higher auditory structures (e.g. medial geniculate body, auditory cortex) are characterized by metabolic changes after noise exposure. However, little is known about the microstructural ch

[Participation of the thalamic reticular nucleus in the shaping of the interrelations of the mesencephalic reticular formation and the lateral geniculate body].

On the awake rabbits and cats under nembutal anesthesia it has been shown that the reticular nucleus of the thalamus takes considerable part in the formation of reticulogeniculate response of the lateral geniculate body (LGB) to electrostimulation of the mesencephalic reticular formation. It is assumed that the reticular nucleus of the thalamus takes basic part in a realization of "rapid" physical influences of the reticular formation on the LGB.

Expression of group II mGluRs in the inferior colliculus, medial geniculate body, and auditory cortex increases with age.

Metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) are widely expressed throughout the central nervous system. They are linked to G-protein coupled receptors and are known to modulate synaptic transmission. The data regarding their expression in auditory structures are not systematic and mainly originate from physiological studies where expression was used to support physiological findings. MGluRs are classified into three groups based on their sequence homology, G protein-coupling, and ligand selectivity. Our recent physiological findings made us focus on the group II mGluRs. The objective of this stu

Bilateral lateral geniculate body lesions causing reversible blindness in a patient with posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome.

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a completely reversible neuroradiological entity caused by accelerated hypertension, eclampsia, certain cytotoxic drugs and acute renal failure. PRES involves posterior circulation of the brain resulting in various manifestations, hence the name. Acute vision loss is one of the manifestations that occurs owing to the involvement of the visual pathway. However, loss of vision due to a lesion involving the lateral geniculate body alone is unusual. We report one such case of a young female who developed acute bilateral painless loss of vision

The cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript, calbindin, calretinin and parvalbumin immunoreactivity in the medial geniculate body of the guinea pig.

The purpose of this study was to describe the distribution and colocalization of cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) and three calcium-binding proteins (calbindin, calretinin and parvalbumin) in each main division of the medial geniculate body (MGB) in the guinea pig. From low to moderate CART immunoreactivity was observed in all divisions of the MGB, although in most of its length only fibers and neuropil were labeled. A small number of CART immunoreactive somata were observed in the caudal segment of the MGB. The central parts of all divisions contained a distinctly smaller
