Giant cell arteritis (GCA), also referred to as temporal arteritis, is a variant of large-vessel vasculitis. GCA should be considered in the differential diagnosis in patients aged >50 years, who present with headache, abrupt onset of visual disturbances, unexplained fever, a high erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and high serum C-reactive protein levels. Diagnosis of GCA is based on accurate interpretation of laboratory data, temporal artery biopsy findings, and imaging study results. Imaging modalities used for GCA include positron emission tomography, computed tomography (CT), CT angiography,

Giant cell arteritis is a medium- and large-vessel vasculitis, the most prevalent systemic vasculitis in subjects over age 60. Clinical features are miscellaneous and sometimes misleading. Elevated acute-phase responses, such as a high erythrocyte sedimentation rate and increased levels of C-reactive protein, are important clues to the diagnosis, which is ensured by a positive temporal artery biopsy. Non invasive imaging techniques such as colour duplex ultrasonography, high resolution tomodensitometry, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography (or 18-fluorodeoxyglucose scin

Whereas giant cell arteritis (GCA) was considered a rare disease 50 years ago, the generalized arteritis is now recognized as an important and significant cause of morbidity in elderly people; its cause and pathogenesis is poorly understood. Glucocorticosteroids are the drug of choice in all clinical types of GCA. In contrast to corticosteroids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have no proven effect on vascular complications to GCA, and cannot be recommended.

Giant cell arteritis is a generalized inflammatory disorder involving large and medium-sized arteries. The etiology is unknown, although an autoimmune pathogenesis seems probable. In view of the clinical similarities between patients with positive biopsy findings for polymyalgia rheumatica and those with negative biopsy findings, many authors favor the concept that polymyalgia rheumatica is an expression of an underlying giant cell arteritis. There is, however, still controversy as to whether polymyalgia rheumatica and temporal arteritis are different expressions of one and the same disease or

Giant cell arteritis is a relapsing large-vessel vasculitis affecting the aorta and its branches. It is the most common vasculitis in persons 50 years of age and older. Vision loss occurs in 18% of patients and is preventable with prompt recognition, evaluation, and treatment. Large-artery complications include stenosis, aortic aneurysms, or dissections. Glucocorticoid therapy is effective, but nearly 50% of patients experience relapse. Tocilizumab and upadacitinib are efficacious glucocorticoid-sparing therapies. Patients require long-term monitoring for aortic aneurysms, a late disease compl

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is the most common primary vasculitis and is associated with potential bilateral blindness. Neither clinical nor laboratory evidence is simple and unequivocal for this disease, which usually requires rapid and reliable diagnosis and therapy. The ophthalmologist should consider GCA with the following ocular symptoms: visual loss or visual field defects, transient visual disturbances (amaurosis fugax), diplopia, eye pain, or new onset head or jaw claudication. An immediate ophthalmological examination with slit lamp, ophthalmoscopy, and visual field, as well as color d

Inflammatory aortic diseases are broadly classified into three categories according to the degree of inflammation: atherosclerosis, atherosclerosis with excessive inflammation, and aortitis/periaortitis. This paper presents a case of a 39-year old man with aneurysmal dilatation of thoracic aorta and aortic valve insufficiency. The aortic wall showed thickening and wrinkled "tree bark" appearance as well as apparent scarring of the intima. Histological examination revealed intimal hyperplasia, a granulomatous/giant cell pattern in the inner tunica media, a few epithelioid macrophages, abundant

GCA is the prime medical emergency in ophthalmology because it may result in loss of vision in 1 or both eyes. This vision loss is preventable if patients are diagnosed early and treated immediately with high doses of corticosteroids.

Giant cell arteritis is a systemic vasculitis with a wide clinical spectrum, and it represents a medical emergency. Visual loss is the most feared complication, and when it happens, it tends to be profound and permanent. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are imperative to minimize potentially devastating visual loss and neurologic deficits. A temporal artery biopsy should be performed on every patient in whom the diagnosis is suspected. The mainstay of therapy remains corticosteroids.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Giant cell arteritis is an important cause of blindness in patients over 60 years of age. We attempt to identify the important clinical aspects in the diagnosis and management of this disorder, so that treatment may be instituted expeditiously to limit visual loss.
RECENT FINDINGS: In addition, we identify current areas of standards in the investigation and treatment of patients with suspected giant cell arteritis.
SUMMARY: We review some newer treatment possibilities, based on recently proposed immunologic models of giant cell arteritis, that may lead to newer treatment m

Giant cell arteritis (GCA), temporal arteritis or Horton's arteritis, is a systemic vasculitis which involves large and medium sized vessels, especially the extracranial branches of the carotid arteries, in persons usually older than 50 years. Permanent visual loss, ischaemic strokes, and thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms are feared complications of GCA. The treatment consists of high dose steroids. Mortality, with a correct treatment, in patients with GCA seems to be similar that of controls.

Giant cell arteritis has been considered an enigmatic disease. It is characterised by chronic granulomatous inflammation of the walls of large and medium-sized arteries. The process has a predilection for the extradural cranial arteries, which include the ophthalmic and the posterior ciliary arteries. It is a multi-symptom disease of older individuals and patients often present with challenging issues and diagnostic dilemmas. We review the literature and latest protocols for the diagnosis and management of giant cell arteritis.

Giant cell arteritis (GCA), the most common form of systemic vasculitis in adults, preferentially involves large and medium-sized arteries in patients over the age of 50. The classic manifestations are headache, jaw claudication, polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), and visual symptoms, but 40% of patients present with a wide range of occult manifestations. Early diagnosis and treatment with prednisone can prevent blindness, the most feared complication of GCA. The pathogenesis of GCA is T-cell dependent and antigen driven. Clinical subsets of GCA appear to result from variable cytokine expression. T

Diagnosis and management of giant cell (temporal) arteritis (GCA) should be performed by physicians who can accurately monitor the ophthalmologic, neurologic, and systemic sequelae of the disease as well as the numerous side effects of systemic corticosteroids, which are typically necessary for treatment. When the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis is seriously entertained, early treatment with adequate doses of oral or intravenous corticosteroids should not be delayed until laboratory confirmation has been obtained. Unilateral or bilateral temporal artery biopsy should be performed on all pati
