Gingival enlargement is a condition that commonly develops during orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic appliances are irritation and retention plaque factors holding up oral hygiene and control of gingival inflammation. Two cases of gingival hypertrophy in young Senegalese females undergoing orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances are described and treated by gingivectomy. Gingival overgrowth is defined as hyperplasia of gingival tissue due to local, systemic or drug-related causes. What is believed to be the first reported case of congenital generalized fibromatosis in an African infant is described. Features in our patient, which were not noted in previous reports of the disease, include gingival hypertrophy, ankylosis of joints, skeletal hyperostosis, and lymphatic dilation of the ileal villi. Corticosteroid therapy was tried in the patient, but did not produce any beneficial effect.

Mowat-Wilson syndrome is a genetic disease characterized by typical facial features, Hirschsprung disease and multiple congenital abnormalities. MWS is a single gene disorder. One of the most specific clinical signs in MWS is the distinctive face. We report a two-year-old boy with multiple congenital anomalies. He had peripupillary atrophy and gingival hypertrophy different from the literature. The patient was also diagnosed with his clinical findings. These features may be important in Mowat-Wilson syndrome and clinicians should keep these findings in mind.

Gingival Hyperplasia (GH) and hypertrichosis (HT) are two sides effects associated with the usage of cyclosporine (CyA) but not with tacrolimus (FK 506). The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and security of the conversion from CsA to FK 506 to treat those two complications. From August 1996 to May 1997, 15 patients (9 males, 6 females) aged from 23 to 63 years old (38 +/- 14, mean +/- SD) were switched from CsA to FK 506, 12 for GH, 2 for HT and one for combined presentation. A 9-year-old boy diagnosed with gingival hypertrophy and with a history of West syndrome and associated low platelet levels underwent gingival reduction surgery. Because difficult intubation was foreseen, the fiberoptic tube was inserted through the nose with the patient breathing spontaneously under remifentanil for sedation and analgesia. The procedure was carried out under balanced general anesthesia and with standard monitoring. At the end of gingivectomy, a tracheostomy was performed and the patient was transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit for postoperative observation.

Hemifacial hypertrophy is a rare developmental disorder, characterized by unilateral enlargement of facial tissues. The hemifacial hyperplasia is classified as true hemifacial hypertrophy and partial hemifacial hypertrophy. It is unilateral enlargement of viscerocranial condition in which not all structures are enlarged. We present a rare case of gingival enlargement in partial hemifacial hyperplasia highlighting the clinical and radiological findings with the corrective treatment offered for gingival enlargement.
