Treatment of gingival recession.

Gingival recession is an intriguing and complex phenomenon. Recession frequently disturbs patients because of sensitivity and esthetics. Many surgical techniques have been introduced to treat gingival recession, including those involving autogenous tissue grafting, various flap designs, orthodontics, and guided tissue regeneration. This article describes different clinical approaches to treat gingival recession with emphasis on techniques that show promising results and root coverage.

Treatment of gingival recession.

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession is an intriguing and complex phenomenon. Patients frequently are disturbed by recession owing to sensitivity and esthetics. Many techniques have been introduced to treat gingival recession, including connective tissue grafting, or CTG; various flap designs; orthodontics; and guided tissue regeneration, or GTR. The authors reviewed human clinical studies to assess which techniques provided optimal results. TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED: The authors reviewed controlled clinical trials to assess the outcome of gingival grafting. They also included histological studies …

Conservative management of gingival recession: the gingival veneer.

UNLABELLED: Gingival recession is apical migration of the gingival tissues resulting in exposure of the underlying root surface. This can cause significant esthetic concerns for the patient, especially when it affects the anterior teeth. The gingival veneer is a prosthesis indicated for challenging clinical situations where there are esthetic concerns because of gingival recession, particularly loss of interdental papillae. Replacement crowns, surgery, or extraction of teeth, and provision of a removable partial denture are other treatment options; however, these have a significant biologic an…

Gingival recession: review and strategies in treatment of recession.

One of the most common esthetic concerns associated with the periodontal tissues is gingival recession. Gingival recession is the exposure of root surfaces due to apical migration of the gingival tissue margins; gingival margin migrates apical to the cementoenamel junction. Although it rarely results in tooth loss, marginal tissue recession is associated with thermal and tactile sensitivity, esthetic complaints, and a tendency toward root caries. This paper reviews etiology, consequences, and the available surgical procedures for the coverage of exposed root surfaces, including three case repo…

Gingival Recession - Causes and Management.

Gingival recession of varying extent and severity is increasingly encountered in general dental practice. This paper outlines the aetiology of recession and discusses management strategies, both conservative and complex. It also highlights when to intervene and what outcomes may be expected.

The management of gingival recession.

This, the second paper in a short series on gingival recession, discusses the various modalities of treatment for gingival recession and the indications for treatment. Special consideration is given to the surgical treatment techniques. Factors affecting the outcome of treatment and success rates of the treatment options are also discussed.

[Gingival recession: what to do?].

The qualitative and quantitative character of the marginal gingiva is not the only cause of root exposure, as mechanical factors can favorize and/or aggravate gingival recession. Suggested therapy is dependent on patient motivation and the evolution of the lesions. Even though there are multiple possibilities for the treatment of gingival recession, one must remain prudent when restoring areas of root exposure, as no protocol exists today which can assure constant success.

Gingival recession and tooth mobility.

Tooth mobility measurements were carried out on 107 teeth with gingival recession in 20 subjects. Alveolar bone dehiscence around 43 of these teeth was measured during flap surgery in 13 subjects. No significant correlation was found between gingival recession and tooth mobility, and between tooth mobility and alveolar bone dehiscence. A positive, significant correlation was present between gingival recession and bone dehiscence. In 17 of the subjects, tooth mobility of 29 homologous contralateral teeth with and without gingival recession was compared. The difference was not significant. The r…

The aetiology of gingival recession.

Gingival recession affects a large proportion of the adult population. This paper discusses the aetiology and mechanisms behind the formation of gingival recession, and considers the relevance of gingival recession to both orthodontics and restorative dentistry. It is followed by a second paper on the management of gingival recession.
