Gnathostomiasis is a systemic parasitic disease that is caused by the ingestion of contaminated raw fish, the intermediate host. Involvement of the skin is a common event, and when it does happen, it can produce a superficial or creeping eruption, pseudofurunculosis, and nodular migratory panniculitis. We carried out a retrospective study of 946 cases of gnathostomiasis; 66 of them had skin biopsies. The diagnosis was made based on clinical and epidemio-logic findings as well as the therapeutic response. The most common skin finding was nodular migratory panniculitis affecting the trunk. Most …

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was evaluated for serodiagnosis of human ocular and visceral gnathostomiasis in comparison to an indirect haemagglutination (IHA) and precipitin (PPT) tests. The ELISA antibody titers were found to range from 1:400 to 1:51,200 against somatic and 1:200 to 1:25,600 against excretory-secretory (ES) antigens. When sera were tested at single dilutions, the ELISA was positive in 7 of 8 gnathostomiasis cases while only 5 and 3 were positive by IHA and PPT respectively. The overall specificity of the ELISA was 96.7% and 97.4% with somatic and ES antigens r…

Five species of Gnathostoma are at present reported from Southeast Asia with specific diagnostic characteristic of each. Also important refe … iated. Methods of transmission, symptoms and signs, the diagnosis and treatment of animal and human gnathostomiasis were also summarized. Effective therapeutic value of many anthelmintic drugs has not been satisfactory, by screening test on white mice previously infected in the tissue with G. spinigerum larvae. However, successful result of treatment was reported …

Neurological features of 24 patients with nervous system gnathostomiasis were reviewed. The commonest presenting features were radiculomyelitis or radiculomyelitis terminating with encephalitis, and subarachnoid haemorrhage. A primary encephalitic form was noted in 2 patients. The salient feature of the disease was a sudden onset of extremely severe radicular pain and/or headache followed by paralysis of the extremities and/or the cranial nerves. Migration signs were also the hallmark of nervous system gnathostomiasis. No single area of the nervous system was inaccessible to the highly invasiv…

We used molecular tools to identify an autochthonous case of gnathostomiasis in Madagascar. This severe ocular infection, caused by Gnathostoma spinigerum nematodes, led to vision loss in the patient's left eye. Clinicians should be aware of this parasitosis in Madagascar and other countries in Africa.

A 16-year-old Thai male presented with sudden onset severe epigastric and right upper quadrant pain, fever (39 degrees C), chills and malais … ical presentation is compatible with abdominopulmonary hypereosinophilic syndrome or visceral larva gnathostomiasis. The presented case is interesting not only for physicians who work in endemic areas of gnathostomiasis but also for clinicians who work in travel medicine clinics in developed countries, to consider abdominopulmonary gnathostomiasis when patients p …
