Optomechanical vector sensing of new forces at 6 micron separation.

The search for new gravity-like interactions at the sub-millimeter scale is a compelling area of research, with important implications for the understanding of classical gravity and its connections with quantum physics. We report improved constraints on Yukawa-type interactions in the [Formula: see text] regime using optically levitated dielectric microspheres as test masses. The search is performed, for the first time, sensing multiple spatial components of the force vector, and with sensitivity improved by a factor of [Formula: see text] with respect to previous measurements using the same t

Gravity, microgravity, and artificial gravity: physiological effects, implementation, and applications.

Gravity, the force that structures the cosmos, also shapes human physiology. It influences skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurological systems, sustaining balance, blood circulation, and functional capacity. Unlike other senses, the brain lacks a dedicated gravity-sensing region and instead relies on a distributed vestibular network, graviception, to interpret gravitational cues. On Earth, gravity-driven blood pooling in the legs triggers compensatory responses that preserve cerebral perfusion. In microgravity, these mechanisms are altered, leading to fluid shifts toward

Elastic Boundary Control in Acoustic Waveguides for High-Fidelity Physical-Layer Telemetry in Downhole Sensor Networks.

In the development of deep shale gas horizontal wells, precise geo-steering relies heavily on downhole sensor networks to acquire extensive formation and engineering parameters. Coiled tubing (CT) provides a promising acoustic waveguide for downhole sensing systems, but conventional acoustic sources rely on gravity-induced interfacial preload. Under highly deviated or horizontal well conditions, the loss of the axial gravity component may induce contact-nonlinearity instability, resulting in waveform distortion and spectral pollution. To address this limitation, a constant-stiffness preloading

Cellular and physiological functions of SGR family in gravitropic response in higher plants.

BACKGROUND: In plants, gravity directs bidirectional growth; it specifies upward growth of shoots and downward growth of roots. Due to gravi … tion of amyloplast (starch granules) in the direction of gravity, and the signaling cascade begins. Gravity sensing, signaling, and auxin redistribution (organ curvature) are the three components of plant gravitropism. Eventually, we focus on the role of multiple SGR genes in shoot and present a complete update on the participation of SGR family members in gravit …

Cells containing aragonite crystals mediate responses to gravity in Trichoplax adhaerens (Placozoa), an animal lacking neurons and synapses.

Trichoplax adhaerens has only six cell types. The function as well as the structure of crystal cells, the least numerous cell type, presented an enigma. Crystal cells are arrayed around the perimeter of the animal and each contains a birefringent crystal. Crystal cells resemble lithocytes in other animals so we looked for evidence they are gravity sensors. Confocal microscopy showed that their cup-shaped nuclei are oriented toward the edge of the animal, and that the crystal shifts downward under the influence of gravity. Some animals spontaneously lack crystal cells and these animals behaved

Morphological and functional diversity of spatially resolved vestibular ganglion neuron cell types.

Vestibular ganglion neurons (VGNs) are the primary sensory neurons of the vestibular system, a relatively understudied sensory modality that … ctively label each VGN cell type. Leveraging these tools, we identified a cell type contributing to gravity sensing and otolith-dependent vestibulo-ocular reflexes, revealing a cell type-specific basis for modality-selective vestibular computations.

Perception of the dynamic visual vertical during sinusoidal linear motion.

The vestibular system provides information for spatial orientation. However, this information is ambiguous: because the otoliths sense the gravitoinertial force, they cannot distinguish gravitational and inertial components. As a consequence, prolonged linear acceleration of the head can be interpreted as tilt, referred to as the somatogravic effect. Previous modeling work suggests that the brain disambiguates the otolith signal according to the rules of Bayesian inference, combining noisy canal cues with the a priori assumption that prolonged linear accelerations are unlikely. Within this mod

Mental representation of space in vestibular patients with otolithic or rotatory vertigo.

In previous studies, we had observed that the occurrence of geometric illusions was reduced when healthy observers were tilted relative to gravity or placed in microgravity. We hypothesized that the alteration of the gravitational (otolith) input was responsible for this change, presumably because of a connection between vestibular and visual-spatial cognitive functions. In this study, we repeated these experiments in vestibular patients who presented signs of otolith disorders. In agreement with the microgravity data, geometric illusions based on horizontal, vertical, and oblique lines were l

Sensory information and the perception of verticality in post-stroke patients. Another point of view in sensory reweighting strategies.

INTRODUCTION: Perception of verticality is highly related to balance control in human. Head-on-body tilt <60° results in the E-effect, meaning that a tilt of the perceived vertical is observed contralateral to the head tilt in the frontal plane. Furthermore, somatosensory loss also impacts the accuracy of verticality perception. However, when several input sources are absent or biased, less options for sensory weighting and balance control occur. Therefore, this study aims to identify the E-effect and assess the effect of somatosensory loss on the extent of the E-effect. METHODS: All patients

Lateropulsion, pushing and verticality perception in hemisphere stroke: a causal relationship?

The relationships between perception of verticality by different sensory modalities, lateropulsion and pushing behaviour and lesion location were investigated in 86 patients with a first stroke. Participants sat restrained in a drum-like framework facing along the axis of rotation. They gave estimates of their subjective postural vertical by signalling the point of feeling upright during slow drum rotation which tilted them rightwards-leftwards. The subjective visual vertical was indicated by setting a line to upright on a computer screen. The haptic vertical was assessed in darkness by manual

Postural control of fish related to gravity input.

The disappearance of gravity input during space flight causes many functional disorders in animal and human postural control system. On the other hand, it has been shown that these functional deficits reduce or disappear with time and adapt to weightlessness. Unusual fish behavior was reported during the first few days of orbit flight and also during postflight recovery in Skylab 3 experiment. Similar fish behavior was observed in microgravity obtained during the parabolic flight of airplane. These results suggest that fish might provide a good model for investigating adaptation of sensory-mot

The role of calmodulin in the gravitropic response of the Arabidopsis thaliana agr-3 mutant.

Calmodulin, a primary plant calcium receptor, is known to be intimately involved with gravitropic sensing and transduction. Using the calmodulin-binding inhibitors trifluoperazine, W7 and calmidazolium, gravitropic curvature of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh, ecotype Landsberg, roots was separable into two phases. Phase I was detected at very low concentrations (0.01 microM) of trifluoperazine and calmidazolium, did not involve growth changes, accounted for about half the total curvature of the root and may represent the specific contribution of the cap to gravity sensing. Phase II commenced …

Otoconial agenesis in tilted mutant mice.

The sense of balance is one of the phylogenetically oldest sensory systems. The vestibular organs, consisting of sensory hair cells and an overlying extracellular membrane, have been conserved throughout vertebrate evolution. To better understand mechanisms regulating vestibular development and mechanisms of vestibular pathophysiology, we have analyzed the mouse mutant, tilted (tlt), which has dysfunction of the gravity receptors. The tilted mouse arose spontaneously and has not been previously analyzed for a developmental or physiological deficit. Here we demonstrate that the tilted mouse, li

Artificial gravity in space and in medical research.

The history of manned space flight has repeatedly documented the fact that prolonged sojourn in space causes physiological deconditioning. Physiological deterioration has raised a legitimate concern about man's ability to adequately perform in the course of long missions and even the possibility of leading to circumstances threatening survival. One of the possible countermeasures of physiological deconditioning, theoretically more complete than others presently used since it affects all bodily systems, is artificial gravity. Space stations and spacecrafts can be equipped with artificial gravit

Theoretical considerations on canal-otolith interaction and an observer model.

Subjective vertical orientation, eye and body movements, and motion sickness all depend on the way our central nervous system deals with the gravito-inertial force resolution problem: how to discern accelerations due to motion from those due to gravity, despite these accelerations being physically indistinguishable. To control body or eye movements, the accelerations due to motion should be known explicitly. Hence, somehow gravity should be filtered out of the specific force or gravito-inertial acceleration (GIA, the sum of both accelerations) as sensed by the otoliths, which are the linear ac

Cerebellar nodulectomy impairs spatial memory of vestibular and optokinetic stimulation in rabbits.

Natural vestibular and optokinetic stimulation were used to investigate the possible role of the cerebellar nodulus in the regulation and modification of reflexive eye movements in rabbits. The nodulus and folium 9d of the uvula were destroyed by surgical aspiration. Before and after nodulectomy the vertical and horizontal vestibuloocular reflexes (VVOR, HVOR) were measured during sinusoidal vestibular stimulation about the longitudinal (roll) and vertical (yaw) axes. Although the gain of the HVOR (G(HVOR) = peak eye movement velocity/peak head velocity) was not affected by the nodulectomy, th

Ground based eccentric chair experiments.

Two subjects were rotated eccentrically in a manner described before. In contrast to a normal control group settings of a luminous line to the subjective vertical were almost unrelated to the gravitoinertial summation vector of gravity and centrifugal forces about four weeks before and totally so shortly after space flight. Only after four days post flight had passed a noticeable relation to the gravitoinertial vector re-established itself in the one subject which actually flew. The correspondence became normal six days after flight. Since there were no clinical abnormalities evident in the su

Otolith functions in weightlessness.

The role of the vestibular organ in the exploration of space has been studied extensively during the past two decades. Many investigators have shown that some persons experience ill effects during the transition from the normal gravity to subgravity or weightlessness. Such adverse reactions can be related to a variety of sensory and somatic changes within the body systems; but it appears that the two major components of the unusual force field--namely, the absence of gravitational stimulation of the otolith organs and the occasional stimulation of the semicircular canals by head and body movem

Plants in Microgravity: Molecular and Technological Perspectives.

Plants are vital components of our ecosystem for a balanced life here on Earth, as a source of both food and oxygen for survival. Recent space exploration has extended the field of plant biology, allowing for future studies on life support farming on distant planets. This exploration will utilize life support technologies for long-term human space flights and settlements. Such longer space missions will depend on the supply of clean air, food, and proper waste management. The ubiquitous force of gravity is known to impact plant growth and development. Despite this, we still have limited knowle

Sensory organization abilities during upright stance in late-onset Alzheimer's-type dementia.

Postural stability was compared between individuals with mild and moderate Alzheimer's dementia and healthy older adults, using the Sensory Organization Test. Interestingly, the moderate group performed more like the healthy group than the mild group. Significant differences (p </= .008) in postural stability were found between the mild group and both the healthy and moderate Alzheimer's groups when vestibular information was critical for stability. Additional differences were found between the healthy and mild groups when vision was inaccurate. These findings suggest a decreased visual depend
