My Grief App for Prolonged Grief in Bereaved Parents: A Pilot Study.

The death of a child is a devastating experience for most parents. Consequently, bereaved parents are at risk to develop physical and mental health problems, including prolonged grief disorder. Nevertheless, there is a lack of evaluated psychosocial interventions for bereaved parents. The primary aim of this study was to examine the feasibility of the My Grief app for bereaved parents. The secondary aim was to evaluate the potential reduction of symptoms of prolonged grief, depression and post-traumatic stress, and cognitive-behavioral processes proposed to prolong grief reactions. The study w…

Grief and loss in old age: Exploration of the association between grief and depression.

BACKGROUND: The proportion of older adults is increasing due to demographic changes. Depression belongs to the most common mental disorders in late life. The loss of an emotionally significant person is a risk factor for the development of depression. The aim of this study is to analyze the association between depression and grief burden resulting from loss. Based on prior evidence, we examined loneliness as a possible mediator and social support as possible moderator of this association. METHODS: The cross-sectional analyses are based on a sample (N = 863) of study participants aged 75+ (M =…

Bereavement and complicated grief.

Bereavement is a common experience in adults aged 60 and older. Loss of a loved one usually leads to acute grief characterized by yearning and longing, decreased interest in ongoing activities, and frequent thoughts of the deceased. For most, acute grief naturally evolves into a state of integrated grief, where the bereaved is able to reengage with everyday activities and find interest or pleasure. About 7 % of bereaved older adults, however, will develop the mental health condition of Complicated Grief (CG). In CG, the movement from acute to integrated grief is derailed, and grief symptoms re…

Grief as a psychiatric disorder.

The revisions DSM-5 and ICD-11 are attempting to describe psychopathological reactions to bereavement. The delineation between depressive disorder and normal bereavement-related depressed state lacks sufficient data to guide diagnostic development. In contrast, there is strong evidence for a diagnosis of prolonged grief that is distinguished from depression and involves marked impairment.

[Grief and depression in the aged].

Bereavement after recent or earlier losses of loved ones is analyzed in 155 patients older than 60 years. Patients were treated by psychiatrists for endogenous, neurotic, or reactive depression. Bereavement was characterized by depressive syndromes, depressive and anxiety developments, chronification of somatic complaints, induction of endogenous depression, lack of grief or late onset of grief reaction, substance abuse and suicide. Women are more prone to bereavement. Special stressors and characteristic features of bereavement in old age are discussed. The pivotal meaning of interpersonal de…

Grief-related facsimile illness.

One aspect of the grief process which is frequently mentioned in the literature on mourning but has not yet received adequate clinical attention is the tendency for the bereaved to assume symptoms and behavior of the deceased. This paper presents evidence that pathologic identificantion 1) is an important clinical syndrome that is frequently misdiagnosed and mistreated, 2) defines a population at high medical and surgical risk, 3) can be diagnosed by history alone, and 4) carries a good prognosis when identified and properly managed. Four of a series of ten clinical cases are presented and dis…

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe the intensity of grief, the psychosocial morbidity, and the coping patterns in members of families classified according to a typology of family functioning comprising supportive, conflict-resolving, intermediate, sullen, and hostile classes. METHOD: One hundred fifteen families were assessed longitudinally 6 weeks (time 1), 6 months (time 2), and 13 months (time 3) after the death of a parent (constituting 670 individual responses) on measures of grief intensity, psychological state, social adjustment, and family coping. A previously described …

Managing Grief and Bereavement.

The Psychiatric Consultation Service at Massachusetts General Hospital sees medical and surgical inpatients with comorbid psychiatric symptoms and conditions. During their twice-weekly rounds, Dr Stern and other members of the Consultation Service discuss diagnosis and management of hospitalized patients with complex medical or surgical problems who also demonstrate psychiatric symptoms or conditions. These discussions have given rise to rounds reports that will prove useful for clinicians practicing at the interface of medicine and psychiatry. Prim Care Companion CNS Disord 2026;28(1):25f0408

Fathers' grief in action.

A child's death is a traumatic life-altering event, which significantly affects parents' mental health and well-being. Literature provides insights on parents' grief; however, less is known about how fathers cope with grief due to underrepresentation in research studies. This article presents selected findings about how fathers grieve, which emerged from a phenomenological study aimed at describing fathers' lived experience of bereavement. Participants described how societal norms influence their grief as men, and shared actionable ways they cope with profound grief. Various practical, creativ…

Transitional objects of grief.

BACKGROUND: Transitional objects provide security and symbolic connection with valued others when separated from them. Bereaved parents often keep, cherish and visit saved objects of their deceased child. This research examined the hypothesis that these objects behave as transitional objects of grief in bereaved mothers during three years following their infants' deaths from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. METHODS: Questionnaires were administered asking about the presence of kept objects and momentos from their deceased infant, and the frequency, location and emotions experienced during visits…

Neurological aspects of grief.

Despite grief being a universal experience and the increased scientific attention paid to grief and bereavement in recent years, studies that seek to better understand the role of the neurological aspects of grief are still scarce. We found 5 studies that discussed the relationship between the neurological aspects of grief due to the death of a loved one. All studies showed an activation of common areas, i.e., the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), prefrontal cortex (PFC), insula and amygdala. These findings could indicate that there is a group of areas working …

With Grief and Growth: Examining Volunteer Motivations and Their Relationships to Grief Intensity and Posttraumatic Growth.

Engaging in volunteer work could be associated with posttraumatic growth (PTG). Investigating the associations among motivations to volunteer, PTG, and grief can help us understand how people cope with death. Volunteer functions theory posits six functions of volunteer motivations: protective, values, career, social, understanding, and enhancement. We studied the associations that each function has with grief intensity, PTG, and current volunteer status. Participants (N = 187) with volunteer experience who experienced death completed an online study. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed t…

Prolonged grief among Turkish migrants in Germany: prevalence and the role of migratory grief.

ABSTRACTBackground: Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is associated with negative health outcomes and appears to be more prevalent among migrants. For migrants, bereavement also includes losses tied to their country of origin, leading to migratory grief. However, the association between migratory grief and prolonged grief has remained unexplored. Objective: This study investigates PGD prevalence, and its grief- and migration-related correlates among first- and second-generation Turkish migrants in Germany.Method: Adults (≥18) with Turkish migration background (self or parental) were included (N = …

Psychometric Properties of Grief Traits and State Scale for Nurses to Measure Levels of Grief.

Frequent exposure to patient deaths prompts nurses to experience grief. Unresolved grief leads to harmful consequences of nurses' mental health and quality of nursing care. A cross-sectional study using an online survey was conducted to determine the psychometric properties of the Grief traits and State Scale for Nurses. Exploratory factor analysis revealed two factors measuring the level of nurses' grief traits (Cronbach's alpha: 0.84) and two factors in grief state (Cronbach's alpha: 0.86). Nurses' feelings of unable to provide good care were associated with a higher risk of grief (odds rati…
