OBJECTIVE: To develop an animal model of intraocular tuberculosis (TB) with features of pulmonary TB and extrapulmonary dissemination to the eye.
METHODS: Hartley strain guinea pigs were infected via an aerosol route with virulent Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We describe an experimental model for the induction of cutaneous melanomas in albino guinea pigs by means of repeated topical application of 7,12-dimethyl-benzanthracene over 13 consecutive months. At the end of the experiment 87.5% of the animals presented multiple lesions of a melanocytic nature. The most frequent and the earliest detected was melanocytic hyperplasia, followed by dysplasia. Normal and streptozocin-treated guinea pigs were examined with a fluorophotometer one hour after receiving an intravenous injection of fluorescein sodium. The level of fluorescence in the vitreous was significantly greater in animals showing marked glucosuria than in normal animals or those showing little glucosuria. The excessive fluorescence of the vitreous is similar to that reported by others in diabetic humans and rats but is found in the guinea pig, an animal known normally to have no retinal vasculature.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection of weanling guinea pigs was studied after subcutaneous and intracerebral inoculation of virus. No clinical illness appeared by day 24 after subcutaneous inoculation, even though animals developed persisting infection in many tissues, with marked variation in histogogic expression. Ultrasonographic examination of 40 pet guinea pigs was performed in the framework of this study. Preparation of the patient for ultrasonography and the examination procedure are described. Normal ultrasonographic findings of the abdominal organs including the liver, spleen, kidney and urinary bladder are presented and illustrated for the first time in this species. The effects of aspirated heavy human meconium and clear human amniotic fluid on newborn guinea pig lungs were compared with the changes these solutions induced in lungs subjected to acute asphyxiation. No specific meconium-induced chemical pneumonitis was observed. The effects of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection on hematopoietic and lymphoid tissues were studied in guinea pigs. Blood parameters, histopathology, and virus distribution in the bone marrow, spleen, lymph nodes, and thymus were assessed during primary nonlethal acute and chronic guinea pig CMV infection.
