[Agnosia for streets and defective root finding].

Topographical disorientation is identified as a condition in which patients are unable to find their way in familiar surroundings, such as their home neighborhood or the admitting hospital after the onset of illness. I proposed to classify topographical disorientation into two categories: agnosia for streets (landmark agnosia) and defective root finding (heading disorientation). Patients with agnosia for streets are unable to identify familiar buildings and landscapes. They can, however, morphologically perceive them and remember their way around familiar areas. The lesions are located in the

Neural mechanisms of cost-benefit decision-making in the rodent anterior cingulate cortex: A systematic review of extracellular recordings.

BACKGROUND: Making decisions is a vital part of life for all beings. Impaired decision-making can lead to various neuropsychiatric diseases and problems, such as drug addiction and gambling. Therefore, it is essential to identify the causes of these disorders and seek effective treatments. Rodents play a key role in studying the brain's neural mechanisms of emotional and cognitive control. METHODS: In this systematic review, we focused on the role of the anterior cingulate cortex in cost-benefit decision-making by assessing extracellular neural activity in rodents. We extracted 46 articles fr

Cingulate cortex in Parkinson's disease.

Once a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) has been made, even in its earliest prodromal form of subjective memory impairment, cognitive impairment has begun and involves anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). While the Braak staging scheme showed mid- to later-stage PD progression from cingulate allocortex adjacent to the corpus callosum and progressing into its neocortical moieties, the last decade has produced substantial information on the role of cingulate cortex in multiple symptoms, not just global measures of cognition. Voxel-based morphometry has been used in many studies of mild cognitiv

A non-reward attractor theory of depression.

A non-reward attractor theory of depression is proposed based on the operation of the lateral orbitofrontal cortex and supracallosal cingulate cortex. The orbitofrontal cortex contains error neurons that respond to non-reward for many seconds in an attractor state that maintains a memory of the non-reward. The human lateral orbitofrontal cortex is activated by non-reward during reward reversal, and by a signal to stop a response that is now incorrect. Damage to the human orbitofrontal cortex impairs reward reversal learning. Not receiving reward can produce depression. The theory proposed is t

3D synaptic organization of layer III of the human anterior cingulate and temporopolar cortex.

The human anterior cingulate and temporopolar cortices have been proposed as highly connected nodes involved in high-order cognitive functions, but their synaptic organization is still basically unknown due to the difficulties involved in studying the human brain. Using Focused Ion Beam/Scanning Electron Microscopy (FIB/SEM) to study the synaptic organization of the human brain obtained with a short post-mortem delay allows excellent results to be obtained. We have used this technology to analyze layer III of the anterior cingulate cortex (Brodmann area 24) and the temporopolar cortex, includi

The neuroanatomical consequences and pathological implications of bilingualism.

In recent years, there has been a rise in the number of people who are able to speak two or more languages. This has been paralleled by an increase in research related to bilingualism. Despite this, much of the neuroanatomical consequences and pathological implications of bilingualism are still subject to discussion. This review aims to evaluate the neuroanatomical structures related to language and to the acquisition of a second language as well as exploring how learning a second language can alter one's susceptibility to and the progression of certain cerebral pathologies. A literature searc

Anterior cingulate cortex activity during attentional control corresponds with rumination in depression and social anxiety.

Rumination and worry are transdiagnostic perseverative cognitions that have overlapping and distinct characteristics. While the mechanisms of perseverative cognitions remain incomplete, limited data indicate anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) as it relates to top-down functions contributes to perseverative cognitions in internalizing conditions. The current study extends this work in patients with major depression (n = 39) or social anxiety (n = 42). During fMRI, participants viewed images comprising letter strings superimposed on task-irrelevant threatening or neutral faces. To moderate task dif

[The physiological function of cingulate cortex and its role in the mechanism of tinnitus].

Cingulate cortex, as an important part of limbic system, is connected with number of areas in the brain, which regulate and control the conduction of multiple sensations. Studies of tinnitus have shown that abnormal changes in cingulate cortex are involved in the process of tinnitus, and play a key role in noise cancelling, cognition and emotional experience of tinnitus. This paper reviews the physiological function of the cingulate cortex and its role in the mechanism of tinnitus, providing new ideas for the treatment of tinnitus.

Novel α-synuclein mutation A53E associated with atypical multiple system atrophy and Parkinson's disease-type pathology.

We describe the clinical, neuropathological, and genetic features of a Finnish patient with a novel α-synuclein (SNCA) mutation A53E. The patient was clinically diagnosed with atypical Parkinson's disease (PD) with age of onset at 36 years. In the neuropathological analysis performed at the age of 60 years, highly abundant SNCA pathology was observed throughout the brain and spinal cord showing features of multiple system atrophy and PD. Neuronal and glial (including oligodendroglial) SNCA inclusions and neurites were found to be particularly prominent in the putamen, caudatus, amygdala, tempo

Petit mal and grand mal seizures produced by toluene or benzene intoxication in the cat.

Motor incoordination, euphoria and hallucinations are symptoms reported for humans voluntarily intoxicated by industrial solvents. An epileptic-like consciousness impairment has also been noted. The present paper describes a technique used for the experimental study of solvent intoxication in which toluene and benzene can be applied directly into the trachea of freely moving cats with chronically implanted electrodes. This technique permits the control of solvent dose and time of exposure. Results showed a 3 Hz spike-wave activity in the gyrus cinguli recording with both toluene or benzene int

[Herpes simplex encephalitis presenting as stroke-like symptoms with atypical MRI findings and lacking cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis].

A 73-year-old woman presented with sudden onset of right hemiparesis and was diagnosed as having cerebral infarction on the basis of diffusion-weighted brain MRI, which demonstrated lesions in the left parietal cortex. On the 3rd day, the patient developed right upper limb myoclonus, aphasia, and disturbance of consciousness with high fever. On the 6th day, she was transferred to our hospital with suspected viral encephalitis, and treatment with acyclovir was started. By the 6th day, the lesions detected by MRI had expanded to the gyrus cinguli, insula and thalamus, but not to the temporal lob

Ictal semiology in anterior cingulate epilepsy: A systematic review.

Seizures originating from the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) have distinct clinical features but can be difficult to identify in frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE). This systematic review examines the key semiology of ACC seizures and their anatomical correlations. A systematic search was conducted following PRISMA guidelines, including studies reporting ictal semiology, invasive EEG findings, and surgical outcomes in patients with ACC seizures, allowing for the establishment of anatomical and clinical correlations with a high level of confidence. Studies based only on stimulations were excluded. We

A distributed and efficient population code of mixed selectivity neurons for flexible navigation decisions.

Decision-making requires flexibility to rapidly switch one's actions in response to sensory stimuli depending on information stored in memory. We identified cortical areas and neural activity patterns underlying this flexibility during virtual navigation, where mice switched navigation toward or away from a visual cue depending on its match to a remembered cue. Optogenetics screening identified V1, posterior parietal cortex (PPC), and retrosplenial cortex (RSC) as necessary for accurate decisions. Calcium imaging revealed neurons that can mediate rapid navigation switches by encoding a mixture

Coregistration of heading to visual cues in retrosplenial cortex.

Spatial cognition depends on an accurate representation of orientation within an environment. Head direction cells in distributed brain regions receive a range of sensory inputs, but visual input is particularly important for aligning their responses to environmental landmarks. To investigate how population-level heading responses are aligned to visual input, we recorded from retrosplenial cortex (RSC) of head-fixed mice in a moving environment using two-photon calcium imaging. We show that RSC neurons are tuned to the animal's relative orientation in the environment, even in the absence of he

Magnetoencephalographic correlates of mood and reward dynamics in human adolescents.

Despite its omnipresence in everyday interactions and its importance for mental health, mood and its neuronal underpinnings are poorly understood. Computational models can help identify parameters affecting self-reported mood during mood induction tasks. Here, we test if computationally modeled dynamics of self-reported mood during monetary gambling can be used to identify trial-by-trial variations in neuronal activity. To this end, we shifted mood in healthy (N = 24) and depressed (N = 30) adolescents by delivering individually tailored reward prediction errors while recording magnetoencephal

Optogenetic Stimulation of the Anterior Cingulate Cortex Modulates the Pain Processing in Neuropathic Pain: A Review.

Neuropathic pain is characterized by hypersensitivity, hyperalgesia, and allodynia, which is caused by damage to the somatosensory nervous system. It substantially impairs the quality of life. The management of neuropathic pain is challenging and should comprise alternative therapies. Researchers working on neural modulation methods in the field of optogenetics have recently referred to novel techniques that involve the activation or inhibition of signaling proteins by specific wavelengths of light. The use of optogenetics in neuropathic pain facilitates the investigation of pain pathways invo

Impact of mild traumatic brain injury on cingulate functions.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a condition of normal neuroimaging, because conventional MRI is not sensitive to brain lesions. Neurocognitive deficits persist for years after injury in 15% of patients. Persistent TAI can continue after the trauma and contribute to progressive disability. Neuropathologic studies underestimate the total axonal damage, by failure to identify fine-caliber unmyelinated fiber. Swollen axons represent the "tip of the iceberg" of damage. Progression of molecular changes, including mitochondrial dysfunction, leads to secondary injuries. Primary low-intensity "in
