Differences in salivary habituation to palatable foods in bulimia nervosa patients and controls.

OBJECTIVE: Bulimia nervosa (BN) patients have been shown to experience anomalous responses to food and food cues. We investigated the response to food over time by presenting repeated food cues and measuring changes in physiological (ie, salivation) and subjective responses. METHOD: Subjects were 18 BN women and 18 matched control women. Two palatable food stimuli, regular or frozen yogurt, that varied in macronutrient composition but had similar sensory characteristics, were presented to subjects repeatedly during a laboratory session. After two baseline salivation measures, subjects were pr

Hyperreactivity and Impaired Habituation of Startle Amplitude During Unpleasant Pictures in Borderline but Not Schizotypal Personality Disorder: Quantifying Emotion Dysregulation.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by greater intensity of reactions to unpleasant emotional cues and a slower-than-normal return of these responses to baseline. Habituation is defined as decreased response to repeated stimulation. Affect-modulated startle (AMS), a translational psychophysiological approach, is mediated by the amygdala and used to study emotion processing in both humans and animals. This is the first study to examine the specificity of habituation anomalies in BPD during passive emotional and neutral picture processing. METHODS: A total of 90 p

Neural correlates of imbalanced habitual and goal-directed behaviors in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Compulsion is a core symptom of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and has been linked to an imbalance between habitual and goal-directed behaviors. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this imbalance, particularly the role of arbitration between habitual and goal-directed systems, remain unclear. METHODS: 31 patients with OCD and 39 healthy controls (HCs) underwent structural and functional MRI while performing the slips-of-action test (SOAT). Behavioral performance, task-related brain activation, and functional connectivity were compared between groups across habitual, goa

Neural circuits underlying habituation of visually evoked escape behaviors in larval zebrafish.

Larval zebrafish that are exposed repeatedly to dark looming stimuli will quickly habituate to these aversive signals and cease to respond with their stereotypical escape swims. A dark looming stimulus can be separated into two independent components: one that is characterized by an overall spatial expansion, where overall luminance is maintained at the same level, and a second, that represents an overall dimming within the whole visual field in the absence of any motion energy. Using specific stimulation patterns that isolate these independent components, we first extracted the behavioral alg

Deficits in habituation of cardiac arousal responses incurred by telencephalic ablation in goldfish, Carassius auratus, and their relation to other telencephalic functions.

The effects of telencephalic ablation on the habituation of cardiac arousal responses in goldfish was studied. The ablation was performed either by ligating the telencephalon of habituated fish between stimulus presentations or by aspiration prior to habituation. The former technique caused dishabituation; the latter, a slower rate of habituation than that of sham-operated controls. The habituation deficit incurred by surgical ablation was found to decline with time, being small after 2 wk. The results are discussed in relation to other telencephalic involvements in behavior and to the plastic

The effects of rumination and reappraisal on repeated exposure to stress.

Adequate recovery and habituation to acute stressors in daily life are essential for mental health. One potential moderator might be the use of different emotion regulation (ER) strategies contributing to interindividual differences in vulnerability to chronic stress. Rumination has been linked to impaired endocrine adaptation, whereas reappraisal tendencies have been associated with boosted habituation to psychosocial stress. Yet, no experimental study has directly compared the causal effects of these strategies on psychoneuroendocrine responses to repeated stress. To address this gap, 91 hea

Challenges to the traditional exposure paradigm: variability in exposure therapy for contamination fears.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Traditional models and methods of exposure therapy utilize a fear hierarchy, whereby patients complete sets of exposures in a graduated manner, with the goal of fear habituation within and between sessions. In the current experiment, we examined whether this typical exposure paradigm was necessary to achieve clinical improvement. METHOD: Fifty undergraduate participants scoring in the top quartile of a self-report measure of contamination fears were randomly assigned to one of two groups: blocked and constant exposure (BC Group) and random and variable exposure (RV

Cyclic changes of sensory parameters in migraine patients.

BACKGROUND: Migraine shows a cyclic pattern with an inter-ictal-, a pre-ictal, an ictal- and a post-ictal phase. We aimed to examine changes in psychophysical parameters during the migraine cycle. METHODS: The perception of nociceptive and non-nociceptive stimuli and an electrically induced axon-reflex-erythema were assessed in 20 healthy controls and 14 migraine patients on five consecutive days according to different phases of the migraine cycle. Pain was rated three times during a 10-second electrical stimulus. The size of the axon-reflex-erythema was determined using laser-Doppler-imaging

Habituation in Aedes aegypti mosquito larvae is context specific.

Mosquito larvae live in water and perform a stereotyped escape response when a moving object projects its shadow on the water surface, indicating potential risk of predation. Repeated presentations of the shadow induce a decrease in the response as a result of habituation, a form of non-associative learning defined as the progressive and reversible decrease in response to a specific reiterative innocuous stimulus. Nevertheless, habituation can be context specific, which indicates an association between the context and the stimulus. The aim of this work was to study context specificity in habit

Hormones and the Coolidge effect.

The Coolidge effect is the renewal of sexual behavior after the presentation of a novel sexual partner and possibly occurs as the result of habituation and dishabituation processes. This re-motivation to copulate is well studied in males and is commonly related to sexual satiety, which involves several neurobiological changes in steroid receptors and their mRNA expression in the CNS. On the other hand, there are few reports studying sexual novelty in females and have been limited to behavioral aspects. Here we report that the levels of rat proceptive behavior, a sign of sexual motivation, decl

The Impact of Event Scale--Revised: evaluation of the subscales and correlations to psychophysiological startle response patterns in survivors of a life-threatening cardiac event: an analysis of 129 patients with an implanted cardioverter defibrillator.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to examine the reliability and validity of the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) with special emphasis on the evaluation of the hyperarousal subscale against a standardized psychophysiological measurement. METHODS: A total of 129 survivors of a life-threatening cardiac event underwent a psychodiagnostic evaluation and a psychophysiological acoustic startle reflex (ASR) paradigm. The ASR assessed the magnitude and habituation of electromyogram (EMG) and skin conductance responses (SCR) in response to the delivery of 15 acoustic startle trials. P

Amygdala and dlPFC abnormalities, with aberrant connectivity and habituation in response to emotional stimuli in females with BPD.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the frontolimbic abnormalities thought to underlie borderline personality disorder (BPD). We endeavoured to study regional responses, as well as their connectivity and habituation during emotion processing. METHODS: 14 BPD patients and 14 normal female controls (NC) controlled for menstrual phase underwent emotion-induction during an fMRI task using standardised images in a block design. We then performed psychophysiological interaction (PPI) analysis to investigate functional connectivity. RESULTS: BPD patients reported more disgust in questionnaires compar

Electrodermally differentiated subgroups of anxiety patients. I. Automatic and vigilance characteristics.

A total of 32 anxiety patients (agoraphobia, panic syndrome, generalized anxiety syndrome) selected according to the DSM-III criteria were compared with 16 controls to determine distinguishing features of autonomic response patterns to a sequence of verbal and acoustic stimuli. In addition sensorimotor tasks were performed. The anxiety patients were classified into electrodermally stabile and labile subgroups on the basis of two reliably measurable psychophysiological parameters: the rate of electrodermal habituation to neutral stimuli and non-specific electrodermal activity. The electrodermal

Sunlight irradiance and habituation of visual evoked potentials in migraine: The environment makes its mark.

Background Migraine is a complex multifactorial disease that arises from the interaction between a genetic predisposition and an enabling environment. Habituation is considered as a fundamental adaptive behaviour of the nervous system that is often impaired in migraine populations. Given that migraineurs are hypersensitive to light, and that light deprivation is able to induce functional changes in the visual cortex recognizable through visual evoked potentials habituation testing, we hypothesized that regional sunlight irradiance levels could influence the results of visual evoked potentials

[The effects of noise on sleep and their possible repercussions on health].

Sleep is a physiological recuperative state susceptible to be disturbed or reduced in length under external stimuli, such as noise, one of the most frequent ambient factors. Sleep disturbance is often accompanied by a reduced quality of the following waking period. The health effects of prolonged exposure to noise concern life quality, as expressed subjectively by the sleeper, as well as probable effect on cardiovascular function through a non specific aggression related to stress.

[An electrophysiological study of the rehabilitation of cognitive functions during the treatment of patients with panic disorders].

To investigate psychophysiological features of panic disorder (PD) before and after treatment with citalopram, P300 auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded in 31 patients who met the DSM-IV criteria of PD and 24 age- and sex-matched normal controls. The ERPs were recorded during a standard two-tone discrimination task (oddball task). The treatment was conducted as a monotherapy during 6 weeks, with citalopram dosage of 20 mg/day. Compared to controls, patients differed significantly by the reduced P300 amplitude and the alteration of its habituation. These patients also demonstr

[Functional dynamics of the pilots of heavy transport helicopters in the course of a flight shift].

Before and after flights about 300 crewmembers of heavy transport helicopters were examined, using psychophysiological and integral methods that yield professionally important information. During a flight shift the health state of helicopter pilots varies via three stages: habituation, initial decline and distinct lassitude, with the latter developing after 5 h flight load. In order to increase human reliability in the pilot-helicopter system, it is advisable to allow 4 h flight time during a flight shift onboard helicopters of the above type. In this case the pilot exposure to vibration effec
