Causes of hair loss and the developments in hair rejuvenation.

Hair is considered to be a major component of an individual's general appearance. The psychological impact of hair loss results in a measurably detrimental change in self-esteem and is associated with images of reduced worth. It is not surprising that both men and women find hair loss a stressful experience. Genetic hair loss is the major problem affecting men and by the age of 50, up to 50% will be affected. Initial attempts to regenerate the lost hair have centred on applying a topical solution of between 2% to 5% minoxidil; however, the results proved disappointing. Recently, finasteride, a…

Kartogenin regulates hair growth and hair cycling transition.

Background: Kartogenin is a heterocyclic compound able to promote the proliferation, migration, and differentiation of various cell types and induce cartilage-like tissue regeneration. However, the role of kartogenin in hair follicles (HFs), remains unknown. We therefore investigated the effects of kartogenin on the regulation of hair growth and hair growth cycle transition. Methods: The effects of kartogenin on the proliferation, cell cycle status, and migration of primary human outer root sheath cells (ORSCs) were evaluated by MTS assay, flow cytometry, Transwell® and scratch assays, respect…

Exogen Hairs in Women with and without Hair Loss.

Contrary to the classical view of the hair cycle, in which telogen is the resting phase that precedes the release of the hair shaft, another phase has been introduced, exogen. Exogen is the phase wherein the processes for the release of the hair shaft are initiated and successfully executed. Exogen ends when the shaft is liberated. Accordingly, human hairs would be preferably released not with telogen but with exogen roots. To better understand this somehow revolutionary point and what occurs in telogen effluvium (TE) and in androgenetic alopecia (AGA), we undertook a morphological study. We e…

The pattern of hair dyeing in koreans with gray hair.

BACKGROUND: Hair graying is considered as a part of normal ageing process. Nonetheless, this process raises a significant cosmetic concern, especially among ethnic Korean elderly whose baseline hair color is black. For this reason, Korean elderly dye their hair with frequency despite the risk of dermatologic problems such as allergic contact dermatitis. OBJECTIVE: In this study, the authors investigate the prevalence and pattern of hair dyeing and its relation with scalp diseases in Korea. METHODS: Six hundred twenty subjects (330 men and 290 women) with graying hair were given a questionnai…

Bubble hair. Case caused by an overheating hair dryer and reproducibility in normal hair with heat.

BACKGROUND: Bubble hair is an acquired hair shaft deformity characterized by bubble-like areas in the hair shaft seen with light microscopy and corresponding cavitary defects with scanning electron microscopy. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to report the fourth case of bubble hair, to demonstrate a cause, and to determine whether the cavities contain gas or liquid. METHODS: Light and scanning electron microscopy were performed. The patient's hair dryer was examined. We applied heat to normal hair of the patient and that of 16 human volunteers. Approximate temperatures for bubble formation were m…

Hair restoration.

The introduction of micrografts (1-2 hair follicular unit grafts) and minigrafts (3-4 hair follicular unit grafts) has made a most significant advancement in the care of male pattern baldness and female androgenic alopecia. Finally, natural and aesthetically pleasing results are possible. Additionally, many other applications in the reconstruction of facial hair and scalp have been found, some of these include: restoration of hair loss due to (iatrogenic) post-surgical causes, ie, after facial rejuvenation procedures or procedures involving incisions on hair bearing facial skin or scalp; scalp…

[Hair loss].

Hair loss includes excessive shedding of hair (effluvium) and the alopecias, in which there is a decrease in the amount of hair. Both may occur diffusely, or in a circumscribed manner. The localization and pattern of circumscribed hair loss may give a clue to its cause. On the basis of morphologic criteria the alopecias are further classified into non-scarring and scarring types. Non-scarring alopecias (diffuse alopecia, androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata) are essentially hair cycling disorders, while scarring alopecias result from irreversible destruction of the hair follicles with recogn…

Hair diseases.

A few common causes of hair loss account for the vast majority of cases. A well-directed history and simple physical examination is often sufficient to make a diagnosis. Laboratory testing is often unnecessary. A scalp biopsy can be useful, but only if processed and interpreted correctly. Androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, senescent alopecia, telogen effluvium, traction alopecia, trichotillomania, and cosmetic hair damage are common causes of non-scarring alopecia. Discoid lupus erythematosus, lichen planopilaris, and central, centrifugal scarring alopecia are the most common forms of sca…

Green hair.

Green hair is an unusual dermatologic condition usually due to the deposition of copper from exogenous sources. We report the cases of two patients who presented to our clinic with green discoloration of their hair. This pigmentation of hair has generally been reported in patients with blond hair as a consequence of increased concentrations of copper in domestic or swimming pool water. Although an increased copper content of the affected hair seems to be a prerequisite, other predisposing factors have to be present for this situation to occur. These include previous hair damage (mechanical, su…

Hair casts.

Hair casts are small cylindrical structures, encircling individual scalp hairs but easily movable along the involved hair shafts. This hair disorder of unknown pathogenesis is only rarely mentioned in the dermatologic literature. We report the case of a 5-year-old girl, who has been treated during 2 years for pediculosis capitis. The literature about hair casts is reviewed.

Hair casts.

Peripilar hair casts are a pathological occurrence which is probably greater than the few reports seem to suggest. In 2 patients the authors have found fine, whitish nodular accretions of epithelial cells and keratinous debris surrounding the hair shafts of the scalp over a length of 3--7 mm located at various distances from the base of the hair along which they can freely move. Long-term or repetitive tractions incidental to modern hair styling or a moderate trichotillomania due to anxiety for hair loss are probably the causative factors.

Hair casts.

The literature on hair casts suggests they are rare even though Kligman intimated in 1957 that in some scalp diseases they might well be common. In this study, casts have been looked for in a group of orthokeratotic and parakeratotic scalp conditions. Hair casts are indeed common in psoriasis, pityriasis amiantacea, pityriasis capitis and seborrhoeic dermatitis. No casts were seen in women with traction hair styles or in those regularly using hair sprays.

[Wooly hair].

Two cases of wooly hair are described. Genealogical studies of the first proband has revealed that the trait is directly transmitted in six generations. The ratio of persons with wooly hair to those with normal hair in this pedigree was 18:14, rohile sex ratio was 1:1. This is in concordance with the autosome dominant type of inheritance. Another proband's parents and other relatives had normal hair. His psychic and physical development was normal. The case is treated as a new mutation of the trait.
