Hand-arm vibration syndrome has been reported in the literature to occur following exposure to vibration from the use of many tools, but to date there have been no case reports of its occurrence in workers who have used high-pressure hoses, alone or with other tools. To remedy this, the case histories of nine subjects (two without mixed exposure) examined in the UK and Canada are presented, together with their severity classified according to the Stockholm scales. Attention is drawn to the need to use multiple diagnostic tests to establish the diagnosis and the need to implement vibration isol…

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to use an established model of vibration-induced injury to assess frequency-dependent changes in transcript expression in skin, artery, and nerve tissues.
METHODS: Transcript expression in tissues from control and vibration-exposed rats (4 h/day for 10 days at 62.5, 125, or 250 Hz; 49 m/s, rms) was measured. Transcripts affected by vibration were used in bioinformatics analyses to identify molecular- and disease-related pathways associated with exposure to vibration.
RESULTS: Analyses revealed that cancer-related pathways showed frequency-dependent change

No Minnesota workers' compensation claims have been filed for permanent partial disability benefits with a diagnosis of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). A cross-sectional study was undertaken to evaluate 519 compensation claimants following carpal tunnel surgery. Workers with significant vibration exposure and symptoms compatible with HAVS were identified within the group. The results show that some workers are not diagnosed as having HAVS even though they meet the diagnostic criteria. This suggests that HAVS should be considered in the differential diagnosis when a worker presents with neu…

Research on vibration syndrome in Japan began in the 1930s with studies of the disorder among railway, mining and shipyard workers. In 1947, the Ministry of Labor decided vibration syndrome among operators of rock drills and riveters etc. was an occupational disease. Industrial developments in the 1950s and 1960s promoted the survey of vibration syndrome in mining, stone quarrying and forestry. The Ministry of Labor (1965) and the National Personnel Agency (1966) legally recognized vibration syndrome among chain saw operators as an occupational disease. Guidelines for prevention and early ther

Regular exposure to hand-transmitted vibration can result in symptoms and signs of peripheral vascular, neurological and other disorders collectively known as the hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). A significant proportion of workers can suffer from HAVS after using vibrating power tools. HAVS is a chronic and progressive disorder. Early recognition and prevention is the key to managing vibrating tool exposures and health effects. This article gives a broad overview of the condition with a detailed account of its pathogenesis, identification and management.

This study provides an overview of the relationships between exposure to work-related hand-arm vibration and the occurrence of pre-defined disorders of the hands. We searched Medline, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Central, and PsycINFO for cross-sectional and longitudinal studies on the association between work-related vibration exposure and the occurrence of hand-arm vibration syndrome (including vibration-induced white finger), Dupuytren's contracture, or hypothenar hammer syndrome. We used a 16-item checklist for assessing the risk of bias. We present results narratively, and we conducte…

BACKGROUND: Hypothenar hammer syndrome (HHS) is a cause of vascular insufficiency to the hand and may be manifest as Raynaud's phenomenon. The cause is trauma to the vulnerable portion of the ulnar artery as it passes over the hamate bone, which may result in thrombosis, irregularity or aneurysm formation.
AIM: This review was undertaken in order to clarify the features of HHS that may differentiate it from hand-arm vibration syndrome.
METHODS: A tiered review of world literature was undertaken using Medline and EMBase as the primary search engines. Fifty-two relevant articles were criticall…

Two experiments were carried out to investigate the cardiovascular responses of vibration-exposed workers to autonomic stimulation. In the first experiment blood pressures, heart rate and systolic time intervals (STI) were measured during a cold test in 63 vibration-exposed foundry workers and 41 controls. STI, such as total electromechanical systole (QS2I) and left ventricular ejection time index (LVETI), were found to be shorter in the vibration-exposed workers with and without vibration white finger (VWF) than in the controls, both at rest and during cold provocation and recovery (p less th

OBJECTIVE: Workers exposed to vibrating tools may develop hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). We assessed the somatosensory phenotype using quantitative sensory testing (QST) in comparison to electrophysiology to characterize (1) the most sensitive QST parameter for detecting sensory loss, (2) the correlation of QST and electrophysiology, and (3) the frequency of a carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in HAVS.
METHODS: QST, cold provocation tests, fine motor skills, and median nerve neurography were used. QST included thermal and mechanical detection and pain thresholds.
RESULTS: Thirty-two patients…

Vibration white finger is a form of secondary Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) caused by the use of handheld vibrating tools. RP usually appears on the extremities of the fingers, and its borders are well recognised. No reports have been published on 'mottled' RP in continuous observation from the onset to the disappearance of RP. A man in his 60s who had been using vibrating tools such as jackhammers and tampers for 30 years presented with sensations of coldness, burning and numbness. Whole-body cold exposure was performed outdoors in winter, and RP was photographed continuously. 'Mottled' RP can be

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) in 617 workers at a base metal mine in northern Ontario. Workers who were employed at the mine between the years 1989 and 1994 and who continued to live within a 100 km radius of the mine were sent a self-reported questionnaire to identify individuals with possible vibration-induced symptoms in their upper extremities. Of the 162 workers who attended the medical examination, 50% were diagnosed with HAVS, 26% had other diagnoses with some workers having multiple afflictions e.g., both HAVS and carp…

Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) continues to weigh heavily on workers’ health, yet how we study it often limits what we learn. Bovenzi et al. make an important contribution by pooling Italian datasets, but the heavy reliance on cross-sectional designs restricts causal insight. Inconsistent exposure metrics, varied outcome definitions, and limited adjustment for confounders risk blurring the true picture of vibration-related harm. The continued use of the ISO 5349-1 standard, despite questions about its accuracy, further complicates interpretation. Perhaps most concerning is the underreprese…
