INTRODUCTION: Capecitabine (Xeloda) is a systemic prodrug of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), which is administered in an oral formulation. Hand-foot syndrome (HFS) has proven to be a chronic dose-limiting toxicity of capecitabine, leading to significant morbidity in patients receiving this agent. The purpose of this review is to define the pathophysiology, risk factors, incidence and management of capecitabine-induced HFS.
METHODS: Literature for this review article was collected from the following databases: PubMed, CINAHL, and the proceedings of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) confi…

Growth failure is a major aspect of the developmental arrest in Rett syndrome. Small hands and feet have been reported anecdotally, but the pattern of hand and foot growth has not been studied rigorously. The aims of this study were to characterize the hand and foot growth of 28 girls with Rett syndrome and to examine the relationship between their hand or foot size and height. Median hand length deviated to the 5th percentile at 11 years of age whereas median foot length and height deviated below the 5th percentile at 5.5 years of age. After adjusting for height-age, a greater proportion of f

There are several human syndromes which involve defects of the limbs and the Müllerian ducts or its derivatives. The hand-foot-genital (HFG) syndrome is an autosomal dominant, fully penetrant disorder that was originally described by Stern et al. Additional reports describing other affected families have also been published. Limb anomalies include short first metacarpals of normal thickness, small distal phalanges of the thumbs, short middle phalanges of the fifth fingers, and fusion or delayed ossification of wrist bones. In the feet, the great toe is shorter due to a short first metatarsal a

We describe a patient who developed Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) following hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) which is known to be caused by enterovirus infection. A 35-year-old man developed acute paraparesis and dysesthesia in the four limbs following typical skin eruption of HFMD. Electrophysiologic studies showed peripheral nerve demyelination predominant in the distal terminals. HFMD is a rare cause of meningitis, encephalitis, and polio-like myelitis, but GBS following HFMD has never been described.

BACKGROUND: Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a common complication of patients infected with huma … weeks and are followed carefully for evidence of adverse treatment effects.
RESULTS: Two cases of hand-foot syndrome (HFS) in patients receiving DOX-SL for AIDS-related KS are reported. Tissue studies demonstrated changes consistent with a toxic effect of the drug on keratinocytes. Hand-foot syndrome was reversible once treatment stopped; however, treatment cessat …

A newborn with the characteristic facies of Freeman-Sheldon syndrome (whistling face syndrome) and unusual hand and foot anomalies is reported. Flexion contractures of fingers were so severe as to prevent their extension. Previously reported patients with similar hand anomalies had only mild to moderate limitation of extension. Over 75 percent of the 29 previous cases of this syndrome had equinovarus deformity. Not only was this deformity absent but the patient had polysyndactyly of the big toe, an anomaly not previously associated with this syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Hand-Foot Syndrome (HFS), also known as palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia, is a common reaction to Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors (TKIs), which can often lead to discontinuation of the drug. Lenvatinib is a recently approved drug for the treatment of endometrial carcinoma, which has been proven to provide a better overall survival rate and longer duration of progression-free survival among patients with advanced endometrial cancer. Herein, we have reported a case of carcinoma endometrium with metastasis who had to discontinue the use of lenvatinib due to the adverse drug reaction.

BACKGROUND: Common variable immunodeficiency is characterized by hypogammaglobulinemia and recurrent bacterial infections. More uncommonly, these patients develop chronic enterovirus infectious meningoencephalitis. Recurrent enterovirus skin infection has not been reported to date in subjects with common variable immunodeficiency.
CASE REPORT: A 26-year-old man had suffered repeated episodes of otorhinolaryngological and pulmonary infections since childhood. He experienced three episodes of vesicular cutaneous eruption involving the palms of both hands, the plantar aspect of the feet and the

The hand-foot-genital syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder previously reported in six families. This report of the seventh family identified with this syndrome is presented to emphasize the frequent occurrence of medial deviation of the first toes (hallux varus).

Hand-Foot Syndrome is a rare adverse reaction to bleomycin-etoposide-cisplatin chemotherapy, characterized by acral skin desquamation, hyperpigmentation, and swelling involving the hands and feet. We report the case of a 32 years old Asian female, diagnosed with right-sided Stage-IV dysgerminoma, who developed cutaneous symptoms following the second cycle of chemotherapy. She presented with hyperpigmentation, swelling, and desquamation affecting both hands and feet. After consultation with the dermatology department, she was diagnosed with chemotherapy-induced skin toxicity. Bleomycin, along w…
