BACKGROUND: Contact between wild (saiga) and domestic (sheep) animals on pastures results in a composite community of helminths. Wild animals like saigas are vulnerable to parasites and the diseases they transmit are fatal. Adults may be less susceptible to infection than their offspring but remain a dangerous source of parasite spread.
AIM: The aim of the article is to determine the environmental factors influencing the spread of helminthiasis (echinococcosis, coenurosis, and moniziosis) in animals.
METHODS: Epizootological indicators of the saigas helminth fauna have been studied to assess

Mortality rates and the prevalence of disease were assessed in 115 flocks of traditionally managed sheep and goats in two Divisions of the North West Province of Cameroon by means of a questionnaire to the owners. The mortality rate was significantly higher in sheep than in goats and also higher in young stock than in adults. Tethering the animals during the day resulted in significantly lower mortality in both adult and young sheep and also in kids. Disease problems of small ruminants, identified on the basis of signs reported by their owners, included intestinal parasitism, especially helmin

BACKGROUND: Tegumentary leishmaniasis (TL) is a disease of skin and/or mucosal tissues caused by Leishmania parasites. TL patients may concurrently carry other pathogens, which may influence the clinical outcome of TL.
METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This review focuses on the frequency of TL coinfections in human populations, interactions between Leishmania and other pathogens in animal models and human subjects, and implications of TL coinfections for clinical practice. For the purpose of this review, TL is defined as all forms of cutaneous (localised, disseminated, or diffuse) and muco

Most drugs used in the treatment of helminthiasis in humans and animals have lost their efficacy due to the development of drug-resistance in helminths. Moreover, since anthelmintics, like many pharmaceuticals, are now recognized as hazardous contaminants of the environment, returning to medicinal plants and their products represents an environmentally friendly way to treat helminthiasis. The goal of the present study was to test the anthelminthic activity of methanol extracts of eight selected European ferns from the genera Dryopteris, Athyrium and Blechnum against the nematode Haemonchus con

Nine farms were each visited regularly for a year in 1979 and 1980 in Salta Province in the subtropics of Argentina. A necropsy was done at each visit and faecal and blood samples were taken from other animals mostly aged between 6 and 18 months. Ninety necropsies were done and nearly 1,500 faecal samples collected. Gastro-intestinal helminthiasis was most general and severe in autumn when calves were about 9 months old and this was followed by a dramatic fall in numbers of worms by the end of winter. Helminths were found in other organs but were not considered important. At peak periods 20% o

D. repens is the causative agent of subcutaneous dirofilariasis in canine animals. In recent years, human invasion by this vector-borne helminthiasis has been recorded in many countries with temperate climate, but the localization of this helminth in the cavities of the human body is extremely rare. Cases of atypical localization of D. repens are described in the organs of the chest, cervical lymph node, in the spermatic cord and epididymis. It is usually requires differential diagnosis with neoplastic or metastatic processes. We report a case of the detection of Dirofilaria repens in the righ

Strongyloidiasis is the most common endemic helminthiasis in several of the world's industrialized nations, yet relatively little is known about its basic biology and immunobiology because a practical rodent model for the investigation of this clinically important parasitism is lacking. This study reports such a model for use in the investigation of Strongyloides stercoralis infection. Normal male gerbils infected subcutaneously with 1000 infective filariform larvae harbored moderate numbers (83.6 +/- 27.6) of adult worms at 35 days after infection, and a low-grade infection persisted for at l

Remarkable progress has been achieved in developing improved serodiagnostic assays for a group of diseases for which other diagnostic methods are often lacking. Toxocariasis, trichinellosis, dirofilariasis, Taenia solium cysticercosis and the cystic and alveolar forms of hydatid disease are occult infections in humans and sometimes in lower animal hosts. Although Strongyloides stercoralis achieves patency in humans, parasitologic diagnosis is often very difficult. Efforts to develop reliable immunodiagnostic methods have spanned several decades but progress had been slow until recently. The co

Examination of 1905 arthropods from a swamp and surrounding pasture in sothern Louisiana revealed larval specimens of Mediorhynchus centurorum in 8 of 228 woodroaches, Parcoblatta pensylvanica, but in no other species. The life cycle was confirmed by feeding eggs of M. centurorum to laboratory-reared woodroaches. Cystacanths later recovered from the woodroaches developed into mature worms when pipetted into esophaguses of red-bellied woodpeckers, Centurus carolinius: red-headed woodpeckers, Melanerpes erythrocephalus; yellow-shafted flickers, Colaptes auratus; and a hairy woodpecker, Dendrocop

Toxocara spp. infection and the seroconversion rate in the Amazon have been poorly investigated. This study analyzed individual and household-level risk factors for the presence of IgG antibodies to Toxocara spp. in urban Amazonian children over a period of 7 years and evaluated the seroconversion rates over a 1-year follow-up. In children < 59 months of age, the overall prevalence rate was 28.08% in 2003 and 23.35% in 2010. The 2010-2011 seroconversion rates were 13.90% for children 6-59 months of age and 12.30% for children 84-143 months of age. Multilevel logistic regression analysis identi

In livestock production, the health of slaughtered animals is crucial to ensuring food safety. In this context, animal cysticercosis poses serious problems within production systems. Cysticercosis caused by Cysticercus tenuicollis (larval stage of Taenia hydatigena) is common in pasture-raised ruminants. Although this helminthiasis is of low pathogenicity for production animals, it is difficult to diagnose during inspection procedures. Animals become infected by ingesting eggs present in water and/or feed contaminated with feces from domestic or wild canids. In this study, viscera from Dorper/

Nowaday, zoonoses are an important cause of human parasitic diseases worldwide and a major threat to the socio-economic development, mainly in developing countries. Importantly, zoonotic helminths that affect human eyes (HIE) may cause blindness with severe socio-economic consequences to human communities. These infections include nematodes, cestodes and trematodes, which may be transmitted by vectors (dirofilariasis, onchocerciasis, thelaziasis), food consumption (sparganosis, trichinellosis) and those acquired indirectly from the environment (ascariasis, echinococcosis, fascioliasis). Adult

Three hundred and fifty one chickens purchased from the Dschang animal market were examined for gastro-intestinal helminths. Ten species were found with the following prevalences: Heterakis brevispiculum (59.3%), Ascaridia galli (51.6%), Hymenolepis carioca (48.4%), Dispharynx spiralis (20.8%), Tetrameres americana (17.1%), Amoebotaenia cuneata (15.1%), Raillietina tetragona (14.5%), Syngamus trachea (13.7%), Hymenolepis cantaniana (5.7%) and Capillaria contorta (2.0%). Infections were predominantly mixed (93.5%). The infection rates were not influenced by host sex except for A. galli which wa

Trichuriasis known as whipworm infection caused by Trichuris trichiura, is a highly prevalent soil-transmitted helminthiasis in low- and middle-income countries located in tropical and subtropical areas and affecting approximately 360 million people. Children typically harbour the largest burden of T. trichiura and they are usually co-infected with other soil-transmitted helminth (STH), including Ascaris lumbricoides and hookworm. The consequences of trichuriasis, such as malnutrition and physical and cognitive growth restriction, lead to a massive health burden in endemic regions. Despite the

Studies were carried out on the etiology of the helminth infections at three industrial sheep complexes typical of this country. The mixed gastrointestinal infection, having an urgent epizootiologic and economic importance, proved that of H. contortus, O. circumcincta, O. trifurcata, M. marshalli, T. colubriformis, T. axei, N. spathiger, N. fillicollis, C. oncophora, B. Trigonochephalum, S. papillosus, T. ovis, Ch. ovina, and O. venulosum. The seasonal and age dynamics of the general Strongylus infection was followed up. Well established were the postpartum phase in ewes and the spring phase i

Diseases affecting livestock can have significant impacts on the animal, humans and the economy. Participatory epidemiology and spatial analysis were conducted to assess livestock disease problems in Samburu County, northern Kenya. Key informants were selected purposively with the help of local leaders. Among the livestock, goats were identified to have the most economic importance. On the other hand Pestes des Petits Ruminants (PPR), Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Camel Trypanosomiasis diseases were identified to have the highest impact on pastoral livelihood. Spatial analysis indicated tha

Helminths infections are among the most important problems in animal health and husbandry. Moreover, zoonotic helminths endanger rural communities, particularly in developing countries. Helminthiasis are not only important in relation to the harmful effects of parasites; additional issues like anthelmintic resistance spread became more important over time. As new anthelmintic development takes many years and millions of dollars of investment, some strategies are currently focused on the modification of already available drugs, in order to improve their efficacy and overcome their limitations.

The effect of prior nematode and cestode infection in sheep on the course of experimental Fasciola hepatica was studied. The cross immunising properties of these parasites per se and the modification of any protective effect conferred by the immunomodulatory compound L tetramisole (levamisole) were investigated. It was recorded that no protection was conferred on sheep against F hepatica infection by virtue of prior infection with any helminth species per se, including Cysticercus tenuicollis. However, a degree of immunity to F hepatica was recorded, for only the second time, in sheep primed w

BACKGROUND: Household flooring is increasingly being investigated as a determinant of health, however the pathways through which flooring may impact health and wellbeing are not yet well understood. The SABABU study is a cluster-randomised controlled trial evaluating the impact of an improved flooring intervention on soil-transmitted helminthiasis, tungiasis, and enteric infections in Bungoma and Kwale counties, Kenya. This paper presents the findings from a theory of change development process that was undertaken as part of the formative research phase of the SABABU project.
