Frequent Use of Hematologic Testing in Children Admitted for Nonaccidental Trauma.

Nonaccidental trauma (NAT) can present with bleeding symptoms. Judicious use of hematologic testing is recommended to evaluate for medical causes of bleeding, while acknowledging inherited bleeding disorders and NAT may be present concurrently. A retrospective chart review using the Pediatric Health Information System database identified pediatric patients <18 years of age with an ICD diagnostic code for NAT associated with admission. Using laboratory charge data, we identified the hematologic testing sent and the number of encounters with expanded hematologic testing (EHT), defined as testing

Evaluation of Hematological, Biochemical, and Coagulation Tests in Patients with Hepatitis C.

Background and Objectives: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) remains a significant cause of chronic liver disease worldwide. While direct-acting antivirals achieve high cure rates, the interplay between viral load, gender, and routine laboratory parameters remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate hematological, biochemical, and coagulation profiles, as well as derived non-invasive indices, in HCV-infected patients, stratified by gender and viremia levels. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 367 patients with HCV infection (223 males and 144 females). Patients were divided in

The serum tryptase test: an emerging robust biomarker in clinical hematology.

During the past few years, a number of molecular markers have been developed in clinical hematology, most of them related to specific gene defects. However, there is also an unmet need to develop novel serologic parameters to improve diagnostics and prognostication in daily practice. Among these, the serum tryptase appears to be a most reliable biomarker of myeloid neoplasms. Elevated tryptase levels are found in subgroups of patients with mastocytosis, myelodysplastic syndrome, myeloproliferative neoplasm, acute myeloid leukemia, chronic myeloid leukemia and chronic eosinophilic leukemia. Comparative Analysis of Chemiluminescence Immunoassay (CLIA)-Based Tests in the Diagnosis of Invasive Aspergillosis in Patients With Hematologic Malignancies.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Rapid chemiluminescence immunoassays (CLIA) have emerged as a promising alternative to traditional serological methods for the diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis (IA). The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic performance of rapid CLIA tests in IA. METHODS: Patient group consisted of 17 patients who were diagnosed with probable IA according to EORTC/MSG criteria. Patients without invasive fungal infection (IFI) were defined as the control group, whereas healthy volunteers were also included. A total of 93 serum samples were used in this study. Platelia Aspergill

Genotoxicity testing of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in a mouse bone marrow micronucleus test complemented with hematological endpoints.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a non-flammable, non-explosive, colorless gas. It is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant and an important chemical intermediate in several industrial processes. The toxicological properties of SO2, including its genotoxic potential, have been studied extensively. The majority of the available in vitro data indicate a lack of genotoxicity of SO2, while for sulfite salts some positive results have been reported. However, recent in vivo studies, using Kunming albino mice, have pointed to in vivo clastogenicity of SO2. To re-evaluate these positive findings, a bone-marrow

Early Prediction of ABO HDN Using Immuno-Hematological and Biochemical Tests.

OBJECTIVE: ABO hemolytic disease of the newborn (ABO HDN) is the most common cause of neonatal jaundice due to feto-maternal incompatibility. The objective of this study is to evaluate early predictors of ABO HDN using immuno-hematological and biochemical tests. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Newborns with blood group A/B born to group O mothers were prospectively enrolled in the present study. Direct antiglobulin test (DAT) and cord blood bilirubin (CBB) were performed. Total serum bilirubin (TSB) was measured at 72 hours of life. Serum anti-A/B IgG titers of maternal samples were measured. For the

Inpatient thrombophilia workup; does hematology consult prevent unnecessary testing?

Hypercoagulable disorders are best described as a group of acquired and hereditary conditions that increase the risk for the development of thrombi within veins or arteries. In the setting of an unprovoked venous thromboembolism, common practice in the inpatient setting has been further investigation via a thrombophilia workup to establish an underlying cause. Current Hematology-Oncology guidelines argue against inpatient workup as the results rarely influence inpatient management. Following American Society of Hematology guidelines (Middledorp), the current study found that only 15% (11/72) o

Assessing patient attitudes toward genetic testing for hereditary hematologic malignancy.

Since 2003, more than 15 genes have been identified to predispose to hereditary hematologic malignancy (HHM). Although the yield of germline analysis for leukemia appears like that of solid tumors, genetic referrals in adults with leukemia remain underperformed. We assessed leukemia patients' attitudes toward genetic testing and leukemia-related distress through a survey of 1093 patients diagnosed with acute or chronic leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, or aplastic anemia. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to analyze patient attitudes. Distress was measured through the Impact of Eve

FISH testing for deletions of chromosome 6q21 and 6q23 in hematologic neoplastic disorders.

Deletions of chromosome 6q are found in many types of cancer, including melanoma, prostate cancer, fibroadenomas, and carcinoma of breast and other sites. Chromosome 6q deletions are also commonly found in lymphoid malignancies such as acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), non-Hodgkins lymphoma (NHL), multiple myeloma (MM), mantle zone lymphoma (MZL), and Waldenström's macroglobulinemia (WM). These deletions may appear to be terminal or interstitial. In childhood B- and T-cell ALL a deletion of 6q is the hallmark of a neutral prognosis; however, it may be cytoge

Chemotherapy and anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody impact on SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid amplification tests in hematologic malignancies: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with hematologic malignancies may experience prolonged severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. This study aimed to evaluate risk factors for persistent SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with hematologic malignancies based on nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) results. Patients with SARS-CoV-2 NAAT positivity lasting ≥ 8 weeks (persistent NAAT-positive group) were compared with those who became NAAT-negative within 8 weeks (non-persistent NAAT-positive group). METHODS: We examined patients with COVID-19 and hematologic malignancies betwee

The clinical course of hospitalized moderately ill COVID-19 patients is mirrored by routine hematologic tests and influenced by renal transplantation.

Several studies of patients with COVID-19 have evaluated biological markers for predicting outcomes, most of them retrospectively and with a … could distinguish survivors from non-survivors among the critical patients. In conclusion, routine hematologic tests are useful to monitor the clinical course of COVID-19 patients admitted with moderate disease. Unexpectedly, changes in hematologic tests, including lymphopenia, were not predictive of complicated outcomes among KT recipients.

American Society of Hematology 2023 guidelines for management of venous thromboembolism: thrombophilia testing.

Hereditary and acquired thrombophilia are risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE). Whether testing helps guide management decisions is controversial. These evidence-based guidelines from the American Society of Hematology (ASH) intend to support decision making about thrombophilia testing. ASH formed a multidisciplinary guideline panel covering clinical and methodological expertise and minimizing bias from conflicts of interest. The McMaster University GRADE Centre provided logistical support, performed systematic reviews, and created evidence profiles and evidence-to-decision tables. Th

Toward laboratory blood test-comparable photometric assessments for anemia in veterinary hematology.

Anemia associated with intestinal parasites and malnutrition is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in small ruminants worldwide. Qualitative scoring of conjunctival redness has been developed so that farmers can gauge anemia in sheep and goats to identify animals that require treatment. For clinically relevant anemia diagnosis, complete blood count-comparable quantitative methods often rely on complicated and expensive optical instruments, requiring detailed spectral information of hemoglobin. We report experimental and numerical results for simple, yet reliable, noninvasive hemoglob

Limitations in the usefulness of urine latex particle agglutination tests and hematologic measurements in diagnosing neonatal sepsis during the first week of life.

We present findings regarding the usefulness of urine latex particle agglutination (LPA) testing for group B streptococcus (GBS) antigen, as well as hematologic values, in diagnosing sepsis during the 1st week of life. Of 475 inborn neonates evaluated, 27 (5.7%) had confirmed sepsis, 47 (9.9%) had indeterminate findings precluding further classification, and 401 (84.4%) were not septic. We examined the following: (1) total white blood cell count (WBC); (2) total polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs); (3) total immature PMNs; (4) immature to total (I:T) neutrophil ratio; (5) immature to mature (I

Remote assessment of cognitive dysfunction in hematologic malignancies using web-based neuropsychological testing.

BackgroundCognitive impairment is a frequent adverse effect of cancer and its therapies. As neuropsychological assessment is not often standard of care for patients with non-CNS disease, efficient, practical assessment tools are required to track cognition across the disease course. We examined cognitive functioning using a web-based cognitive testing battery to determine if it could detect differences between patients with cancer and controls.MethodsWe enrolled 22 patients with multiple myeloma (MM) or non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and 40 healthy controls (mean age = 56 ± 11 years, 52% male).
