Tracheal aspirates from four previously healthy infants with acute pulmonary hemorrhage, and small volume bronchial lavages from children undergoing flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy were examined for pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) containing hemosiderin. Inguinal lymph nodes of patients with venous insufficiency of the lower extremities were studied by light microscopy. Presence of erythrocytes was found in all structural parts of these organs. In cortical region and paracortical zone siderophages with hemosiderin were observed. The origin of hemosiderin is discussed.

A new program of serum ferritin kinetics was applied for studying the increasing and decreasing phases of ferritin and hemosiderin iron in iron addition and removal in patients with a normal level of iron stores or iron overload. A long-term investigation of bone mineral metabolism in a newly developed strain, the WBN/Kob rat, which spontaneously develops diabetes, possibly due in part to hemosiderin deposition, was conducted.
