A coinfection of severe leptospirosis and scrub typhus in Indian Himalayas.

Scrub typhus and leptospirosis are zoonosis and systemic febrile illnesses with diverse, nonspecific clinical manifestations, and shared ris … nochromatography test were positive. This coinfection is first to be documented in this holy Indian Himalayas. Clinical suspicion, early laboratory diagnosis, and early treatment could prevent complications and fatal outcomes. Coinfection of this type may be considered when there is persistence of fever and a treatment response to doxycycline.

Ethnomedicinal and ecological status of plants in Garhwal Himalaya, India.

BACKGROUND: The northern part of India harbours a great diversity of medicinal plants due to its distinct geography and ecological marginal conditions. The traditional medical systems of northern India are part of a time tested culture and honored still by people today. These traditional systems have been curing complex disease for more than 3,000 years. With rapidly growing demand for these medicinal plants, most of the plant populations have been depleted, indicating a lack of ecological knowledge among communities using the plants. Thus, an attempt was made in this study to focus on the eco

Evaluating Challenges and Opportunities to Boost Forest Productivity in the Kashmir Himalayas.

Forests are vital ecosystems that sustain biodiversity, regulate climate, and support local livelihoods. However, in the Kashmir Himalayas, forest productivity faces multiple constraints, including financial limitations, population pressure, land-use changes, and political instability. This study employs expert-based assessments and the Garrett ranking method to systematically evaluate the key challenges and opportunities for improving forest resource productivity in the region. Findings reveal that financial limitations (Mean Garrett Score [MGS] 70.80; R1), increasing population pressure (MGS…

Associations among cataract prevalence, sunlight hours, and altitude in the Himalayas.

The relationship between cataract prevalence, altitude, and sunlight hours was investigated in a large national probability sample survey of 105 sites in the Himalayan kingdom of Nepal, December 1980 through April 1981. Cataract of senile or unknown etiology was diagnosed by ophthalmologists in 873 of 30,565 full-time life-long residents of survey sites. Simultaneously, the altitude of sites was measured using a standard mountain altimeter. Seasonally adjusted average daily duration of sunlight exposure for each site was calculated by a method which took into account latitude and obstructions

Revealing four decades of snow cover dynamics in the Hindu Kush Himalaya.

Knowledge about the distribution and dynamics of seasonal snow cover (SSC) is of high importance for climate studies, hydrology or hazards assessment. SSC varies considerably across the Hindu Kush Himalaya both in space and time. Previous studies focused on regional investigations or the influence of snow melt on the local hydrological system. Here, we present a systematic assessment of metrics to evaluate SSC dynamics for the entire HKH at regional and basin scale based on AVHRR GAC data at a 0.05° spatial and daily temporal resolution. Our findings are based on a unique four-decade satellite

Phytochemical studies of Jurinea macrocephala roots from Western Himalaya.

Phytochemical investigation of the Jurinea macrocephala roots afforded six compounds namely β-sitosterol (1), lupenone (2), physcion (3), ptiloepoxide (4), 20, 21α-epoxytaraxastan-3β-ol (5) and chlorogenic acid (6). All the compounds were isolated for the first time in roots. The structures of the compounds were established by analysis of their spectroscopic (1H and 13C NMR) and spectrometric (MS) data, as well as by comparison of these with those reported in the literature. Metabolic profiling of chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions were also accomplished using NMR. In NMR analysis, ERETIC

Climate change mitigation potential of fruit orchards in the mid-hills of the Indian Himalayas.

While fruit orchards contribute to carbon sequestration, limited data exist on their overall role in climate change mitigation, particularly in terms of carbon footprint. The present study (2023-2024) was conducted in the mid-hill temperate agroclimatic zone of Himachal Pradesh to assess the climate change mitigation potential of high-density apple and conventional peach, plum, and apricot orchards. For biomass estimation, a semi-destructive method was employed, while for carbon footprint pretested questionnaire was used to collect information regarding agricultural inputs. The carbon stock of
