The objective of the present work was to study the structure of voice disorders in children depending on the methods chosen to diagnose dysphonia. Medical histories of 1,451 children at the age varying from 2 months to 16 years were analysed. All of them were patients hospitalized for the first time between 1997 and 2007 to treat hoarseness caused by vocal cord nodules, functional or mutational dysphonia, chronic laryngitis, vocal cord paresis/palsy, recurring respiratory papillomatosis, vocal cord cystitis, and cicatrical laryngeal stenosis. It was shown that vocal cord nodules and functional…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the incidence, severity, and duration of hoarseness after adult cardiac surgery and to examine movement of the endotracheal tube (ETT) during neck extension for sternotomy.
DESIGN: Prospective study.
SETTING: University hospital.
PATIENTS: Seventy-two adults undergoing elective cardiac surgery (assessment of hoarseness was completed in 68).
INTERVENTIONS: An ETT with an internal diameter of 8.0 mm and 7.5 mm was used for men and women, respectively. After surgical positioning, the ETT was placed with its tip about 3 cm above the carina.
MEASURES: ETT migration du…

Due to a hoarseness or dysphonia about 1 % of patients consult a doctor. The causes of hoarseness are very diverse and can range from a harmless laryngitis to vocal cord tumors. In addition to acute and chronic laryngitis (42 % and 10 %), functional dysphonia (30 %), benign (15 %) and malignant tumors (3 %), vocal cord paresis (5 %), the physiological aging voice (2 %) and psychogenic factors (2 %) can cause hoarseness. The manifestation of internal diseases is very rare. Treatment options depending on the cause are drugs, voice therapy or surgery. The present article gives an overview of poss…

Hoarseness is a common phenomenon that can be caused by uncommon pathology. One seldom cause is Ortner's syndrome, a rare cardiovocal disease that can lead to hoarseness due to left recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy induced by mechanical compression of the nerve by cardiovascular structures. This case report describes a case of a 41-year-old woman with sudden onset of hoarseness. The patient had known pulmonary hypertension and Eisenmenger's syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Hoarseness (dysphonia) is the reason for about 1% of all consultations in primary care. It has many causes, ranging from self-limited laryngitis to malignant tumors of the vocal cords.
METHODS: This review is based on literature retrieved by a selective search in PubMed employing the terms "hoarseness," "hoarse voice," and "dysphonia," on the relevant guideline of the American Academy of Otolaryngology -Head and Neck Surgery, and on Cochrane reviews.
RESULTS: Hoarseness can be caused by acute (42.1%) and chronic laryngitis (9.7%), functional vocal disturbances (30%), and benign (…

BACKGROUND: Hoarseness caused by Ortner's syndrome is a rare diagnosis, first described in 1897 in a patient with an enlarged left atrium due to mitral valve stenosis. Due to mechanical compression on the left recurrent laryngeal nerve patients present with hoarseness.
CASE DESCIPTION: A 70 year old male presents with hoarseness and an inability to swallow. Examination reveals a paresis of the left vocal cord. A Computed Tomography scan shows a saccular aneurysm of the proximal descending thoracic aorta, consistent with Ortner's syndrome. Patient was successfully treated with a thoracic endov…

Dysphonia is altered voice quality, pitch, loudness, or vocal effort that impairs communication or decreases voice-related quality of life. Hoarseness is vocal roughness and a possible manifestation of dysphonia. This article uses the broader term dysphonia because it reflects of a wide range of voice complaints, with or without vocal roughness. Dysphonia is often caused by benign conditions but may also be the sentinel symptom of a serious or progressive condition requiring immediate diagnosis and management. The role of laryngeal visualization in assessment and diagnosis for these patients i…

A 55-year-old man had a 3 month history of hoarseness and choking when he drinks liquids. Physical examination revealed evidence of left sided palsy of 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th cranial nerves. A brain MRI revealed a skull base lytic lesion. The authors diagnosed Collet-Sicard syndrome. The patient was found to have colon cancer. He received palliative skull radiotherapy and died few weeks later in hospice care.

INTRODUCTION: Xanthoma disseminatum (XD) is a rare, benign, non-Langerhans cell histiocytic disorder with unknown etio-pathology. It manifests with multiple, grouped, red-brown to yellow papules and nodules involving the skin, mucous membranes, and internal organs with a predilection for flexures and the face.
CASE REPORT: We report a patient who presented with disseminated xanthomatous papules and nodules involving the face, neck, trunk, axilla, groin, and oral cavity, along with hoarseness of voice. Video laryngoscopy revealed multiple yellowish nodules over the base of the tongue, vallecul…

OBJECTIVE: This guideline provides evidence-based recommendations on managing hoarseness (dysphonia), defined as a disorder characterized by altered vocal quality, pitch, loudness, or vocal effort that impairs communication or reduces voice-related quality of life (QOL). Hoarseness affects nearly one-third of the population at some point in their lives. This guideline applies to all age groups evaluated in a setting where hoarseness would be identified or managed. It is intended for all clinicians who are likely to diagnose and manage patients with hoarseness.
PURPOSE: The primary purpose of …
