Hookworm infections of schoolchildren in southern Thailand.

A study of hookworm infections of schoolchildren was conducted in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, southern Thailand. Of the 2,940 hookworms that were recovered from the children, almost all (99.9%), were Necator americanus, only three (0.1%) were identified as Ancylostoma duodenale, and all were female worms. An estimation of the worm burden of and the worm expulsion from the schoolchildren indicated there were 17 cases of light intensity hookworm infection. Fifteen cases (88.2%) expelled worms in numbers that corresponded with the worm burden that was estimated from the number of eggs per gram …

Immunobiology of hookworm infection.

Hookworms infect almost one billion people and are a major cause of iron-deficiency anaemia in developing countries of the tropics. Despite their prevalence and the morbidity they cause, little is known about the immune response to this complex eukaryotic parasite. Recent publications have shed light on the human cellular immune responses to hookworms, as well as mechanisms that hookworms utilize to skew the immune response in its favour. Unlike most other human helminth infections, neither age- nor exposure-related immunity develops in the majority of infected people. A vaccine is therefore a

Soil-transmitted helminth infections: ascariasis, trichuriasis, and hookworm.

The three main soil-transmitted helminth infections, ascariasis, trichuriasis, and hookworm, are common clinical disorders in man. The gastrointestinal tract of a child living in poverty in a less developed country is likely to be parasitised with at least one, and in many cases all three soil-transmitted helminths, with resultant impairments in physical, intellectual, and cognitive development. The benzimidazole anthelmintics, mebendazole and albendazole, are commonly used to remove these infections. The use of these drugs is not limited to treatment of symptomatic soil-transmitted helminth i

[Epidemiological Study On The Hookworm Infections In Korea].

This study was undertaken to evaluate the present status of hookworm infections in Korea from October 1976 through September 1978. The stool specimens of 5,632 persons(male 3,689: female 1,943) collected from primary and middle schools, foundling asylums, and the general populations of various parts in Korea were examined The methods employed were brine floatation technique for the prevalence rate of hookworm infections, Kato's cellophane thick smear technique for the other helminthic infections, and Stoll's dilution egg counting technique for the intensity of hookworm infections. Ancylostoma …
