Hydranencephaly is a rare developmental disorder in which the cerebral hemispheres are replaced by a cystic space filled with cerebrospinal fluid and covered by intact meninges. Ophthalmic findings include pupillary abnormalities, strabismus, nystagmus, ptosis, optic nerve hypoplasia, chorioretinitis, retinal vessel attenuation, and incomplete anterior chamber cleavage.

We recorded electrophysiological responses, both electroretinograms (ERGs) and visual evoked responses (VER), at 4 and 21 months of age in a child with hydranencephaly. As expected, the ERG was normal. Despite the apparent absence of most of the cerebral cortex, a VER was present at both visits. The child's visual performance definitely improved both subjectively and electrophysiologically. The VER contained multiple early components in contrast to previous reports, where only a slow, monophasic response was detected.

Sleep and body movements were studied in 2 hydranencephalic neonates using visual analysis and polygraphic recording. They manifested period … tical correlation in its organization. The observation of body movements may be useful in detecting hydranencephaly in early infancy.

A case is presented of almost complete destruction of the cerebellum secondary to a hemorrhagic event in utero. Lesions consistent with hydranencephaly were found in the territories of the vertebral-basilar circulation. Ependymitis and aqueduct occlusion secondary to the intraventricular bleeding resulted in intrauterine hydrocephalus formation.

OBJECTIVE: To prospectively evaluate the results of endoscopic choroid plexus cauterization (ECPC) and ventriculoperitoneal shunts (VPSs) in infants with hydranencephaly or near hydranencephaly.
METHODS: We prospectively collected clinical data from all untreated hydranencephalic and near hydranencephalic children from October 2006 to March 2008. All patients treated were randomly divided into 2 groups, ECPC or VPS, and submitted to either endoscopic choroid plexus cauterization or ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement.
RESULTS: Seventeen patients were entered into the study. ECPC was complet…
