Parameter estimation of a plant uptake model for cyanide: application to hydroponic data.

A plant uptake model is applied to describe free cyanide and ferrocyanide transport and fate in willow (Salix eriocephala var. Michaux) grown in hydroponics. The model is applied to experimental data to determine best-fit parameter values, their associated uncertainty, and their relative importance to field-scale phytoremediation applications. The fitted model results, using least-squares optimization of the observed log concentrations, indicate that free cyanide volatilization from leaf tissue and free cyanide cell wall adsorption were negligible. The free cyanide maximum uptake rate and assi…

Accumulation and localization of cadmium in Echinochloa polystachya grown within a hydroponic system.

Phytoremediation is a technology for extracting or inactivating pollutants. Echinochloa polystachya [(H.B.K.) Hitchcock] (Poaceae) is a fast-growing perennial grass that is common in tropical areas and is often found in oil-polluted soils that contain high concentrations of heavy metals. However, its tolerance to heavy metals, and its ability to accumulate them, has yet to be investigated. Here we test the hypothesis that E. polystachya is able to accumulate high concentrations of cadmium (Cd). Plants were grown hydroponically with different levels of Cd(2+) (0, 0.25, 1, 2, 10, 50, and 100mgL(

Hydroponic uptake of atrazine and lambda-cyhalothrin in Juncus effusus and Ludwigia peploides.

Phytoremediation encompasses an array of plant-associated processes known to mitigate contaminants from soil, sediment, and water. Modification of pesticides associated with agricultural runoff includes processes directly associated with aquatic macrophytes in addition to changes in soil geochemistry and associated rhizospheric degradation. Remediation attributes of two vegetative species common to agricultural drainages in the Mississippi Delta, USA, were assessed using atrazine and lambda-cyhalothrin. Concentrations used in 8-d hydroponic exposures were calculated using recommended field app

Ecophysiological, anatomical, and apigenin changes due to uptake and accumulation of cadmium in Matricaria chamomilla L. flowers in hydroponics.

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the most important heavy metals in the environment which has several effects on the morphology, physiology, and anatomy of plants. It is a mobile heavy metal that can be transferred easily into plants, thus entering into the human food chain. Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.) as an important medicinal plant can uptake and accumulate Cd in its root and aerial organs. In this research, the effects of different concentrations of Cd (90, 180, and 360 μM) were investigated on the growth parameters, anatomical features, and enzymatic antioxidant activities in flowers of cha

Design and experimental evaluation of an orderly harvesting device for hydroponic leafy vegetables.

Hydroponic leafy vegetables are well suited to standardized cultivation, but mechanical harvesting remains constrained by root entanglement, unstable clamping and disordered plant posture. To address these problems, an orderly harvesting device integrating rotating root flicking, clamping conveying and differential steering was designed and evaluated using hydroponic spinach and Shanghai bok choy. The device used counter-rotating nylon brushes for non-cutting root treatment, a twisted double-belt clamping conveyor for low-damage conveying and a differential belt steering unit for posture adjus

Highly selective turn-on chemodosimetric sensing of proline for environmental and hydroponic monitoring.

Proline is an important biomarker in biological regulation and plant stress adaptation, increasing the demand for highly specific analytical detection methods. Herein, we report the use of DMAC as a chemodosimetric probe that exclusively identifies proline in the presence of 19 competing amino acids. The sensing mechanism relies on an irreversible chemical reaction between proline and DMAC, producing a distinct optical response with negligible background interference. This exhibits a highly sensitive limit of detection of 15.8 nM (1.82 ppb), signifying its importance in trace-level quantificat

Interaction of beneficial microorganisms and phenolic compounds in hydroponically cultivated tomato plants.

The combined effects of applying extracts derived from plant debris and biostimulant microorganisms have not been thoroughly investigated. Furthermore, the interaction between these components and plants remains poorly understood. Utilizing the commercial cherry tomato (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Unidarkwin) as a study model, we conducted a hydroponic experiment in a controlled growth chamber to assess the impact of foliar application of phenolic compounds extracted from Vitis vinifera leaves, combined with the inoculation of Trichoderma harzianum or Bacillus velezensis via roots. Comparison of Corn and Rice Sensitivity to Cyanobacterial Extract and Anatoxin-a in Soil and Hydroponic Media.

Cyanobacterial toxins (cyanotoxins) produced in harmful algal blooms are toxic to eukaryotic cells. Plants exposed to cyanotoxins through irrigation can accumulate toxins and have decreased yields, so an understanding of the effects of cyanotoxins on major crop plants is important. Although the effects of some cyanotoxins on growth and photosynthesis of common agricultural crops have been studied, how cyanotoxin uptake may be impacted by differences in root anatomy has not been studied. Hence, we exposed corn and rice, plants lacking and possessing a constitutively well-developed root exodermi

Mercury speciation in selenium enriched wheat plants hydroponically exposed to mercury pollution.

Mercury (Hg) pollution in agricultural soils and its potential pathway to the human food chain can pose a serious health concern. Understanding the pathway of Hg in plants and how the speciation may change upon interaction with other elements used for biofortification can be critical to assess the real implications for the final plant-based product. In that respect, selenium (Se) biofortification of crops grown in Se-poor soil regions is becoming a common practice to overcome Se deficient diets. Therefore, it is important to assess the interplay between these two elements since Se may form com

Mechanisms of cadmium accumulation and translocation in rice affected by microbial agents under hydroponic conditions.

Cadmium (Cd) accumulation in rice grains threatens global food security, yet the functional components of microbial agents that regulate plant internal Cd translocation remain unclear. Here, we compared the effects of live-cell treatment and secretion treatment on Cd accumulation and translocation in hydroponic rice. Rice was treated with Pseudomonas straminea, Allorhizobium oryzae, or their synthetic consortium, and integrated analyses of tissue Cd, root exudate metabolomics, rhizospheric microbial community, and structural equation modeling were performed. Live-cell treatment induced only mo
