Hydrops fetalis is a morbid condition caused by a wide variety of fetal, placental, and maternal diseases. Mortality is high and depends on the gestational age at the time of occurrence and underlying etiology. Although the condition was described more than 300 years ago, recent advances in obstetric ultrasound, prenatal diagnostics have made it possible to differentiate various etiologies involved. It is also possible to treat some of these fetuses prenatally. In utero medical and surgical therapy is presently done in some centers. However, the majority of cases diagnosed remain untreatable. …

Hydrops foetalis is an uncommon condition, occurring in 1/1400-1/4000 of all pregnancies. The possible etiologies to the disease are numerous and up to now the prognosis has been very dull, with a mortality-rate of 40-90%. A successfully treated case story is presented. It is concluded, that it is essential from the very beginning to treat the child aggressively to restore normal respiratory and circulatory function. When this is performed the child will have a good chance of surviving and developing normally.

This article reviews the various aspects of non-immune hydrops fetalis, including the historical background, aetiology, clinical presentation, antenatal diagnosis and perinatal management, as well as presenting some data on cases of non-immune hydrops fetalis treated in the newly established Obstetrics Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong at the Prince of Wales Hospital.

A case of recurrent nonimmune hydrops fetalis is presented. In each of the 2 pregnancies involved, early neonatal death occurred. Only 1 other case could be discovered in the literature where the problem recurred. Hence, normally, a good prognosis for future pregnancies is given. In spite of extensive investigation, the etiology of nonimmune hydrops fetalis remains unknown. The condition is associated with preeclampsia, polyhydramnios, and premature labor. While the polyhydraminos renders management difficult, it makes the ultrasound diagnosis much clearer. This early diagnosis ensures the ava…

BACKGROUND: Non-immune hydrops fetalis (NIHF) is a rare fetal condition with a very high mortality in spite of advances in prenatal diagnostic techniques, early detection, and individualized management. Despite advancement in fetal therapy and rapidly developing new knowledge about the aetiology and prenatal diagnosis, its management has remained controversial.
METHODS: This is a descriptive review ofNIHF.
RESULTS: NIHF is a rare fetal condition that presents in an extremely acute manner with almost 90% mortality. Fetal cardiac anomalies are the most common cause and chromosome anomalies are…

Hydrops fetalis occurs when the rate of interstitial fluid production by capillary ultrafiltration exceeds the rate of interstitial fluid return to the circulation via lymphatic vessels. Developmental differences in the microcirculation and lymphatic system of the fetus, as compared with mature subjects, renders the fetus susceptible to interstitial fluid accumulation. These differences include greater capillary permeability, more compliant interstitial compartment, and greater influence of venous pressures on lymphatic return. The balance between interstitial fluid production and removal is m…

With the decline in the frequency of rhesus isoimmunisation, hydrops fetalis secondary to other factors is becoming increasingly recognised. We describe a case in association with chorioangioma of the placenta. The causes of non immune hydrops are reviewed and the problems of management discussed.

Concentrations of total protein, albumin, colloid osmotic pressure, and immunoglobulins G and M were measured in the umbilical venous plasma of 4 infants with alpha-thalassaemic hydrops fetalis. Total protein, albumin, and colloid osmotic pressure concentrations were low, and these are likely to contributory factors in the formation of fetal oedema. Immunoglobulin G levels were low suggesting a reduction in placental transfer probably due to placental oedema.

The development of fetal hydrops in conjunction with intrathoracic pathology has been described, but rarely in association with pulmonary sequestration. The current report presents three cases of antenatally identified nonimmune hydrops fetalis, seen in association with pulmonary sequestrations. In one case, a left-sided chest mass also was defined. One infant was born by emergency cesarean section because of fetal distress at 34 weeks' gestation; the other two were delivered vaginally at 30 and 36 weeks. Two of the newborns were severely hydropic and required aggressive cardiorespiratory resu…
