OBJECTIVE: Fractures of the hyoid bone are rare occurrences. They are mainly caused by strangulation/asphyxiation injuries, trauma to the neck, and motor vehicle accidents (MVAs). As a result of their rarity, proper treatment guidelines are not in place for dealing with these injuries. In this study, a systematic literature review was conducted with the goal of identifying optimal management for patients with fracture of the hyoid bone.

The most common manifestation of plasma cell neoplasms is multiple myeloma. Solitary and localized tumours in the form of solitary plasmacytoma of the bone or extramedullary plasmacytoma are rare. In the late stages of multiple myeloma, bulky bone tumour infiltrates may be found which may be the primary clinical manifestation of the previously unknown malignancy. We report a case of a hyoid bone tumour with extramedullary plasma cell infiltrates in the oropharynx in multiple myeloma.

The reasons why some hyoids fracture in strangulation and others do not may relate to anatomic features of the hyoid bone. A 36-year-old man presented with acute cerebral infarction in the right frontal lobe associated with right internal carotid artery dissection (CAD). Enhanced computed tomography revealed right greater horn of the hyoid bone in close proximity to the right internal carotid artery (ICA). It was speculated that mechanical compression of the internal carotid artery by the hyoid bone induced by neck rotation was related to ICA dissection. Greater knowledge of the association between the hyoid bone and the CAD will lead to increased awareness and appropriate diagnosis.

Fractures of hyoid bone resulting from trauma other than strangulation are very rare, isolated hyoid bone fractures are even rarer, and occur more frequently in young individuals, and in men more than in women. A comprehensive review of the world literature, also two rare cases of isolated hyoid bone fractures induced by direct trauma onto the anterior neck are presented. Additionally, a table summarizing 31 cases from 1954 to 2003, is included. Mechanism of injury, diagnosis, complications, prognosis, and treatment are discussed.

Superior laryngeal neuralgia is a rare condition. We report a case of superior laryngeal neuralgia with deviated hyoid bone. A 50-year-old woman presented with paroxysmal and lancing pain localized to the area around the thyrohyoid membrane. Pain was induced and worsened by swallowing.
