Primary hyperparathyroidism.

Primary hyperparathyroidism is not rare. It is particularly common after the age of 50 and may affect up to 3% of postmenopausal women. It is commonly found as a result of blood tests performed for other reasons and is therefore often asymptomatic. Surgical treatment is recommended for patients with renal stone disease, plasma calcium above 3 mmol/L and accelerated bone loss (e.g., bone density < 3 standard deviations below the young normal mean). There is considerable debate about whether mild asymptomatic disease should be treated, but if there is rapid bone loss, either surgical or medical

[Primary hyperparathyroidism].

Primary hyperparathyroidism due to a solitary adenoma of the right inferior parathyroid gland was diagnosed in a 60 year old female, presenting a 4 year complaint of progressive disabling bone and joint pain. The diagnostic follow-up used in this case, including the imaging techniques, the clinical features and the medical and surgical management are presented and discussed.

[Primary hyperparathyroidism].

Primary hyperparathyroidism Abstract. Primary hyperparathyroidism is a common endocrine disease that comes along with a disruption of the calcium homeostasis and is accompanied by a variety of downstream disorders. These are often overlooked as patients present with a multitude of unspecific symptoms or may even be asymptomatic. The diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism can be made with the determination of calcium and parathyroid hormone levels, including the measurement of calcium in the 24-hours urine. The operation is the only therapy to cure primary hyperparathyroidism. To successfully

Primary hyperparathyroidism.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is a condition that affects calcium metabolism due to parathyroid hormone (PTH) hypersecretion leading to hypercalcemia. Manifestations have changed over time, from a symptomatic disease with bone pain, fractures, nephrolithiasis, and muscle weakness, to a condition that is mainly asymptomatic (80-90%). Typical symptoms and signs occur in the bones and kidneys and atypical manifestations are cardiovascular, neuropsychiatric and cognitive, neuromuscular, rheumatological, and gastrointestinal. Diagnosis occurs, in most cases, in asymptomatic patients by a routi

Primary hyperparathyroidism.

We report a case of hyperparathyroidism with hypercalcemia caused by a giant parathyroid adenoma. We use a technetium sestamibi scan to locate parathyroid mass. Bone emission computed tomography revealed the classic signs of metabolic osteopathy. She was recovered after parathyroidectomy.

Primary Hyperparathyroidism.

The 4 parathyroid glands derive from the third and fourth pharyngeal pouches and descend caudally to the anterior neck. Through the secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH), the parathyroid glands are primarily responsible for maintaining extracellular calcium and phosphorus concentrations. Hypercalcemia may be distinguished in parathyroid-hypercalcemia and nonparathyroid hypercalcemia. The most common disorders include primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), malignancy, granulomatous diseases, and medications. PHPT is a disease characterized by excessive secretion of PTH. PHPT is most commonly due

Primary hyperparathyroidism.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), the most common cause of hypercalcemia, is most often identified in postmenopausal women with hypercalcemia and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels that are either frankly elevated or inappropriately normal. The clinical presentation of PHPT includes three phenotypes: target organ involvement of the renal and skeletal systems; mild asymptomatic hypercalcemia; and more recently, high PTH levels in the context of persistently normal albumin-corrected and ionized serum calcium values. The factors that determine which of these three clinical presentations is more l

Primary hyperparathyroidism.

In this Review, we describe the pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), with a focus on recent advances in the field. PHPT is a common endocrine disorder that is characterized by hypercalcaemia and elevated or inappropriately normal serum levels of parathyroid hormone. Most often, the presentation of PHPT is asymptomatic in regions of the world where serum levels of calcium are routinely measured. In addition to mild hypercalcaemia, PHPT can manifest with osteoporosis and hypercalciuria as well as with vertebral fractures and nephrolithiasis, both of which

Primary hyperparathyroidism.

Primary hyperparathyroidism is a common endocrine disorder caused by overactivation of parathyroid glands resulting in excessive release of parathyroid hormone. The resultant hypercalcemia leads to a myriad of symptoms. Primary hyperparathyroidism may increase a patient's morbidity and even mortality if left untreated. During the last few decades, disease presentation has shifted from the classic presentation of severe bone and kidney manifestations to most patients now being diagnosed on routine labs. Although surgery is the only curative therapy, many advances have been made over the past de

Primary hyperparathyroidism.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is a common disorder in which parathyroid hormone (PTH) is excessively secreted from one or more of the four parathyroid glands. A single benign parathyroid adenoma is the cause in most people. However, multiglandular disease is not rare and is typically seen in familial PHPT syndromes. The genetics of PHPT is usually monoclonal when a single gland is involved and polyclonal when multiglandular disease is present. The genes that have been implicated in PHPT include proto-oncogenes and tumour-suppressor genes. Hypercalcaemia is the biochemical hallmark of PHPT

[Primary hyperparathyroidism].

For the past 40 years, primary hyperparathyroidism has been recognized as a common endocrine disease which is, most often, "non-symptomatic", without the occurrence of nephrolithiasis or osteitis fibrosa cystica. Our knowledge in the pathophysiology has increased largely and diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism is usually easy. The only radical treatment is surgery and the surgical indications have been codified by several consensus conferences. For patients who do not undergo surgery, prolonged medical monitoring is needed.
