Schedule-induced polydipsic consumption of hypertonic NaCl solutions: effects of chlordiazepoxide.

Rats were exposed to daily, 3-h sessions of schedule-induced polydipsia (SIP) in which either water, hypertonic NaCl solution (1.5% or 2.2%), or concurrent water and 1.5% NaCl were available. Each condition was in effect for several, consecutive weeks. Presession subcutaneous injections of chlordiazepoxide (CDZP) produced dose-related increases in the polydipsic ingestion of both NaCl solutions but had smaller and less certain effects on water consumption. Under the concurrent-fluid presentation condition, CDZP primarily increased NaCl solution consumption. Conditions generating SIP may functi

[Hypertonic saline solutions in resuscitation in hemorrhagic shock. An experimental study].

The aim of the study was to evaluate the use of hypertonic solutions in restoring intravascular volume in a model of hemorrhagic shock. Eighteen pigs underwent general anesthesia and were instrumented with a carotid catheter to record mean arterial pressure (MAP), a pulmonary artery catheter for pulmonary arterial pressure (MPAP) and cardiac output (CO) monitoring and an electromagnetic flowmeter around the abdominal supraceliac aorta for aortic flow measurement (Vaor). Oxygen delivery (DO2) and oxygen consumption (VO2) data were calculated by standard formulas. The animals were hemorrhaged to…

Membrane potential stabilization in amphibian skeletal muscle fibres in hypertonic solutions.

This study investigated membrane transport mechanisms influencing relative changes in cell volume (V) and resting membrane potential (E(m)) following osmotic challenge in amphibian skeletal muscle fibres. It demonstrated a stabilization of E(m) despite cell shrinkage, which was attributable to elevation of intracellular [Cl(-)] above electrochemical equilibrium through Na(+)-Cl(-) and Na(+)-K(+)-2Cl(-) cotransporter action following exposures to extracellular hypertonicity. Fibre volumes (V) determined by confocal microscope x z - scanning of cutaneous pectoris muscle fibres varied linearly wi

Water drinking caused by intracerebroventricular infusions of hypertonic solutions in cattle.

Infusions into the lateral cerebral ventricle of hypertonic solutions of NaCl, mannitol or sucrose all induced water drinking in cattle. However, infusion of hypertonic NaCl caused a significantly greater water drinking response than did the infusions of mannitol or sucrose, despite the fact that CSF osmolality increase was similar. In contrast, hypertonic solutions of NaCl or mannitol had similar dipsogenic effects when infused intravenously. The intracerebroventricular infusions of hypertonic NaCl or mannitol did not affect the intakes of food or Na solution. The results are consistent with …

The calculation of the osmotic volumes of distribution of hypertonic sodium bicarbonate and other hypertonic solutions: a theoretical approach.

Correction of a base deficit with hypertonic sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) according to the formula 0.3 x body weight (kg) x BE may overestimate the real demands, especially during shock and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Life threatening alkalosis and osmolal poisoning may be the consequence. As an explanation, the possibly impaired functional distribution space related to low cardiac output and volume centralization during CPR is proposed. By application of our own and outside literature, data equations are specified for an approximate precalculation of osmolality and pH changes due to i

[Hypertonic and hyperoncotic solutions in the resuscitation of patients with burn shock].

Altered micro- and macrocirculation in burns allows the hypertonic (10%) solution of sodium chloride with dextran to be used for primary fluid resuscitation as well as with the purpose of reducing the interstitial edema. Efficacy of dextran was evaluated in 13 patients with burn shock. Dextran (1:1) in the dose of (7.2 +/- 0.8) ml/kg body mass makes for stabilization of the arterial blood pressure and permits managing without infusion of dopamine but is not an alternative to be regarded as radical cure; it can be recommended as a provisional measure for the adequate hemodynamics to be maintain

[Accidental epidural injection of hypertonic sodium chloride solution].

Twenty ml of 20% hypertonic saline were accidentally injected into the epidural space of a 53-year-old man with lumbar backache and sciatica. This resulted in severe thoracolumbar pain, which disappeared after he received by the same route 20 ml of 1% lidocaine and 40 ml distilled water. Three months later, the sciatica had almost all disappeared; there remained no motor deficit. A literature survey helped to explain the signs described. Further cases of accidental epidural injections of other drugs are discussed.

Treatment of uncontrolled hemorrhagic shock with hypertonic saline solution.

Hypertonic saline solution (HTS) treatment of uncontrolled hemorrhagic shock (UCHS) induced by incision of three major branches of the ileocolic artery, leading to free intra-abdominal bleeding, was studied in rats. The rats were divided into two groups. In group 1, the abdominal wall was closed immediately after induction of hemorrhage and the rats were divided into six subgroups--1a, five untreated; 1b, 14 treated with 5 milliliters per kilogram of sodium chloride 7.5 per cent (HTS) after five minutes; 1c, eight had HTS infused after 15 minutes; 1d, nine had HTS infused after 30 minutes; 1e,

The role of isotonic and hypertonic solutions in the resuscitation of shocked patients.

The role of intravenous salt solutions in resuscitation is reviewed historically. A brief account of the pathophysiology of shock is given. The particular use of hypertonic solutions in the resuscitation of severely shocked patients is reviewed and its mechanism of action discussed. It is considered that hypertonic solutions may find a role in any future major military conflict. Two hypertonic solutions that are suggested for consideration in this context are 12% sodium chloride (2 mmol/ml) and 8.4% sodium bicarbonate (1 mmol/ml).

[Tolerance of two inhaled hypertonic saline solutions in patients with cystic fibrosis].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to evaluate the tolerance of two inhaled hypertonic saline solutions (HS) in patients with cystic fibrosis. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Eighty one cystic fibrosis (CF) patients (44 males; mean age 23.63 years) inhaled 5 ml of 7% inhaled HS solution and, in those patients who did not tolerate HS, we evaluated the tolerance of a 7% HS (at dose of 5 ml) added to 0.1% hyaluronic acid at least twenty-four hours later. RESULTS: Twenty one (26%) patients did not tolerate the HS solution immediately after its inhalation. Cough was the most common symptom.

Hypertonic-hyperoncotic solutions improve cardiac function in children after open-heart surgery.

OBJECTIVES: Hypertonic-hyperoncotic solutions are used for the improvement of micro- and macrocirculation in various types of shock. In pediatric intensive care medicine, controlled, randomized studies with hypertonic-hyperoncotic solutions are lacking. Hypertonic-hyperoncotic solutions may improve cardiac function in children. The primary objective of this controlled, randomized, blinded study was to evaluate the hemodynamic effects and safety of hypertonic-hyperoncotic solution infusions in children shortly after open-heart surgery for congenital cardiac disease. The secondary objective was

Effect of intravenous infusion of hypertonic glucose solutions on pancreatic HCO3(-) secretion.

To examine why intravenous infusion of hypertonic non-electrolyte solutions inhibit pancreatic HCO3(-) secretion, the relationship between pancreatic HCO3(-) secretion and plasma pH was examined before and following intravenous infusion of hypertonic glucose to 5 anesthetized, secretin infused (2.7 C.U./kg b.wt.h-1) pigs. Hyperglycemia (plasma glucose 103 +/- 6 mmol/l) did not significantly change plasma pH, Na+, K+, Cl- and HCO3(-) concentrations. Hyperglycemia reduced pancreatic water flux by 48 +/- 5% and raised pancreatic juice HCO3(-) concentration by 43 +/- 4 mmol/l. Concurrently, HCO3(-

Antiulcer activity of hypertonic solutions in the rat: possible role of prostaglandins.

The effects of hypertonic solutions on gastric acidity and on experimental gastric and duodenal ulcers as well as on gastric prostaglandins (PGs) were studied in the rat. The oral administration of a 10% NaCl solution resulted in complete absence of free acidity and very significant reductions in total acidity 24 h after pyloric ligation. The antiulcer effect of hypertonic saline was studied in three experimental models. In pyloric-ligated rats, both the incidence and the severity of gastric ulcers were remarkably reduced by hypertonic saline treatment. Indomethacin-induced gastric erosions we…
