[Hyperuricemia and gout].

In most cases (98-99 %) primary hyperuricemia is caused by impaired renal excretion of uric acid. Overproduction of uric acid is rare. Secondary hyperuricemia has to be differentiated from primary forms. Clinical manifestations of hyperuricemia are acute inflammatory arthritis, tenosynovitis, bursitis, chronic arthropathy and accumulation of urate crystals in the form of tophaceous deposits. In addition renal complications can occur. Pathophysiology and diagnosis of gout were described. Treatment of gout has two goals: Treatment of the acute gout attack, to terminate pain and disability and tr…

Hemodynamics of hyperuricemia.

Prolonged hyperuricemia is associated with the development of hypertension, renal arteriolosclerosis, glomerulosclerosis, and tubulointerstitial injury. It confers a greater risk than proteinuria for developing chronic renal disease and is associated with the development of hypertension. Mild chronic hyperuricemia without intrarenal crystal deposition was induced in rats by inhibiting uricase with oxonic acid. Hyperuricemic rats developed hypertension, afferent arteriolar thickening, and mild renal interstitial fibrosis. Additionally, hyperuricemia accelerated renal damage and vascular disease…

Hyperuricemia and gout.

Gout is not a new disease for clinicians; nevertheless, there are still many secrets awaiting discovery for improving knowledge with respect to uric acid metabolism and monosodium urate crystal-induced inflammation. This review of the literature will focus on new insights on the pathogenesis of idiopathic hyperuricemia, and on secondary hyperuricemia and gout. There are also important advances on the pathophysiology of acute gout, especially as a self-limited process (switch from monocyte to macrophage, peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-gamma, and nitric oxide), but also of chronic go…

Gout and hyperuricemia.

Gout is a condition characterized by the deposition of monosodium urate crystals in the joints or soft tissue. The four phases of gout include asymptomatic hyperuricemia, acute gouty arthritis, intercritical gout and chronic tophaceous gout. The peak incidence occurs in patients 30 to 50 years old, and the condition is much more common in men than in women. Patients with asymptomatic hyperuricemia do not require treatment, but efforts should be made to lower their urate levels by encouraging them to make changes in diet or lifestyle. Acute gout most commonly affects the first metatarsal joint …

Gout and hyperuricemia.

Although there continue to be relatively few basic studies of the metabolism and transport of urate, clinical interest in gout and hyperuricemia remains high. A number of interesting new observations are described here from the published literature of the past year. Various aspects of the diagnosis, management, and pathophysiology of gout and gouty arthritis have been recently reviewed. The therapy of gout and hyperuricemia continue to lead to significant complications.

Gout and hyperuricemia.

Although our understanding of hyperuricemia and gout has changed little over the past several years, questions remain in defining the many metabolic abnormalities that can result in these problems. In the past year, several papers have further addressed heritable mechanisms for the development of hyperuricemia, as well as environmental factors that contribute to its onset in adulthood. Consequences of hyperuricemia other than clinical gout have received further attention. Although typical gout is easily recognized and treated, several recent papers have addressed atypical presentations of gout…

[Globulinopathy and hyperuricemia].

Investigation of the locomotor system of 20 patients is reported. One patient with arthrosis of the hip joint and concomitant osteonecroses … a2-globulin peak in amyloidosis, are described. Three patients had cryoglobulinemia. In 10 patients hyperuricemia was found repeatedly (by the uricase method). Consequently in these diseases it is necessary to search clinically for crystal induced synovitides and arthropathies. The classification of globulinopathies and the method of their determination is indi …

Alleviation of senkyunolide A on hyperuricemia and hyperuricemia-induced renal damage in rats.

Senkyunolide A (SEA), the major phthalide from the ethyl acetate extract of traditional Chinese medicine Chuanxiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong), potently inhibited xanthine oxidase (XOD) in vitro in our preliminary study. However, its efficacy in alleviating hyperuricemia and hyperuricemia-induced renal injury in vivo, along with its molecular mechanisms, remains unverified. The study found that SEA significantly lowered serum uric acid levels and attenuated hyperuricemia-induced renal damage of rats, while exhibiting no hepatotoxicity. Further mechanism study suggested that SEA inhibited the prod…
