The efficacy of foot and neck cooling on autophagy and cellular stress responses in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from older adults exposed to extreme heat.

With rising average global temperatures, extreme heat events are becoming more frequent and intense, placing heat-vulnerable older adults at an elevated risk of mortality and morbidity. We recently showed that a brief 2 h access to air-conditioning during a simulated heatwave confers cytoprotective benefits in older adults; however, air-conditioning is inaccessible to many. Although foot immersion and neck cooling have been proposed as alternative cooling strategies, their effects on cellular stress are unclear. We evaluated cellular responses (autophagy, apoptosis, acute inflammation, and hea

The effect of exercise-induced elevation in core temperature on cold-induced vasodilatation response in toes.

Cold-induced vasodilatation (CIVD) has been proposed as a potential protective mechanism against cold injuries during exposure of extremities to a cold environment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of exercise and the associated elevation in core temperature on toe skin temperatures during immersion of the foot in cold (8 degrees C) water. Subjects (N = 8) participated in two trials. In one, they conducted an incremental exercise to exhaustion (exercise) on a cycle ergometer, which was followed by immersion of the right foot in 8 degrees C water. In the second trial (contro

Factors affecting the in vivo precision of broad-band ultrasonic attenuation.

The in vivo precision of broad-band ultrasonic attenuation (BUA) was measured in one normal male volunteer over periods of one day and six weeks and in a group of 10 volunteers over a period of two weeks using a Walker Sonix UBA 1001 bone mineral analyser in which the foot is immersed in a water tank. Coefficients of variation ranged from 1-3% and, in general, there was no difference in BUA variance between right and left feet. However, right foot BUA values were consistently greater than those of the left, but there was no difference between mediolateral and lateromedial transmission. The use

Enhancement of cold-induced vasodilatation following acclimatization to altitude.

The present study evaluated the effect of high-altitude acclimatisation on the cold-induced vasodilatation (CIVD) response. A group of highly trained mountaineers (N = 9; Alpinists) were tested before and after a 3 week high-altitude Himalayan expedition (altitude ranging from 3,985 to 6,828 m). A control group (N = 7) with no mountaineering experience was tested at the same time points. During each test, subjects first immersed their hand to the styloid process in 37 degrees C water for 5 min and then in 10 degrees C water for 30 min. Upon completion of the hand immersion, the same procedure

Physiological responses of the human extremities to cold water immersion.

Five subjects immersed their hands and feet twice during 1 hour sessions in a calorimeter bath, filled with water at 25 degrees C. Before immersion the hand (33.0 +/- 2.2 degrees C) was warmer than the foot (30.6 +/- 2.1 degrees C) and so was the blood flow: respectively 5.8 +/- 5.2 versus 0.7 +/- 0.3 ml.min-1.100 mo tissue-1 as determined by strain gauge plethysmography and 10.8 +/- 5.1 versus 6.7 +/- 5.3 by the doppler method. At the end of the immersion period the blood flow had decreased a factor of 2.9 (doppler) and 4.3 (plethysmography). The local heat transfer, determined by heat flux t

Hypothermia and Cold Weather Injuries.

Hypothermia, frostbite, and nonfreezing cold injuries predominantly affect older adults, homeless or intoxicated people, adventurers, and military personnel. Prevention begins with clothing that is clean, layered, and loose to promote circulation. Base layers made of moisture-wicking materials are favored over wool or cotton. Wool or fleece garments are ideal for middle layers, whereas outer layers should repel moisture. Hypothermia occurs when core body temperature drops below 95°F and can be staged by clinical symptoms when core temperature measurement is unavailable. Initial treatment inclu

Regional heat loss in resting man during immersion in 25.2 degrees C water.

Five male subjects having a wide range of relative body fat, 9.2-20.2%, were studied during total body immersion in water at 25.2 degrees C. The regional surface area of each subject was calculated from anthropometric data utilizing a segmental geometric model. Skin temperatures (Tsk) and regional skin heat loss were measured prior to and during 30 min immersion at 13 sites. During immersion, mean Tsk was 25.9 degrees C and remained significantly higher than the water temperature. A measurable temperature gradient for heat flow was observed from all body segments. Segimental temperature in wat

A review of trench foot: a disease of the past in the present.

From the French Invasion of Russia in 1812, to Glastonbury festival in 2007, trench foot has been reported, yet the exact nature of the condition remains unclear. This review explores the pathogenesis and treatment of trench foot. Trench foot is considered to be a nonfreezing cold injury often complicated by infection, in which exposure to cold temperatures just above freezing, combined with moisture, results in a peripheral vasoneuropathy. The presence of physical trauma, bacterial or fungal infections, malnutrition, venous hypertension and lymphoedema mean that some individuals are at greate

Previous recreational cold exposure does not alter endothelial function or sensory thermal thresholds in the hands or feet.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? Does recreational cold exposure result in cold sensitivity and is this associated with endothelial dysfunction and impaired sensory thermal thresholds? What is the main finding and its importance? Previous cold exposure was correlated with cold sensitivity of the foot, which might indicate the development of a subclinical non-freezing cold injury. Endothelial function and thermal detection were not impaired in cold-sensitive individuals; therefore, further research is required to understand the pathophysiology of subclinical and clinica

Circulatory disturbances of the foot in vibration syndrome.

Circulatory disturbances of the foot in patients with vibration syndrome were studied by measuring the skin temperature of both index fingers and great toes through a 3-min immersion of the right foot in cold water at 10 degrees C. Subjects included 11 patients with vibration-induced white finger (VWF) [VWF(+) group], 12 patients without VWF [VWF(-) group], and 20 healthy referents not exposed to vibration. Patients were all male chain saw operators who had scarcely been exposed to vibration of the foot. The prevalence of coldness felt in the upper and lower extremities was greater than 90% in

Cold-induced vasodilatation in the foot is not homogenous or trainable over repeated cold exposure.

Cold-induced vasodilatation (CIVD) is proposed to be a protective response to preserve tissue integrity in the extremities during cold exposure, but little research exists on either the trainability or the spatial pattern of CIVD response in the foot. We investigated the thermal response across the foot with repeated cold exposure. Ten healthy subjects immersed their left foot to the ankle in 8 degrees C water for 30 min 5 days/week for 3 weeks. Skin temperature was recorded on the medial side of the nail bed of the 5 toes and the dorsum of the foot. The presence of CIVD, defined as an increas

The effect of foot temperature on laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI) and transcutaneous oxygen pressure (TcPO2) measurements.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Assessment of foot microcirculation is increasingly implemented into clinical practice to assess vascular status and wound-healing potential in patients with vascular disease when conventional assessment techniques provide limited or unreliable information. Transcutaneous oxygen pressure (TcPO2) and laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI) are techniques used to assess microcirculation in the foot. However, foot temperature is currently not considered during TcPO2 and LSCI measurements, despite substantial variation between patients and across measurements. Determining its influen

Nerve conduction studies in experimental non-freezing cold injury: II. Generalized nerve cooling by limb immersion.

After immersion of the hind limb of the rabbit, up to the lower thigh, in a waterbath, at 1 degree C for 10 to 14 hours under light anesthesia, there was evidence of persistent nerve damage to the tibial nerve, which varied in severity in different animals. Nerve conduction studies, carried out within 24 hours of removal from the bath, showed that in a proportion of the motor and/or afferent fibers, there was conduction failure between the knee and ankle. This was followed, over the next 48 hours, by distal degeneration of the affected fibers. No persistent conduction block was seen. After dis

Trainability of cold induced vasodilatation in fingers and toes.

Subjects that repeatedly have to expose the extremities to cold may benefit from a high peripheral temperature to maintain dexterity and tissue integrity. Therefore, we investigated if repeated immersions of a hand and a foot in cold water resulted in increased skin temperatures. Nine male and seven female subjects (mean 20.4; SD 2.2 years) immersed their right (trained) hand and foot simultaneously in 8°C water, 30 min daily for 15 days. During the pre and post-test (days 1 and 15, respectively) the left (untrained) hand and foot were immersed as well. Pain, tactile sensitivity and skin tempe

Cardiovascular Stress and Characteristics of Cold-Induced Vasodilation in Women and Men during Cold-Water Immersion: A Randomized Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Cold-induced vasodilation (CIVD) is a phenomenon that refers to a paradoxical increase in finger temperature that sometimes occurs during cold exposure. The aim of this study was to compare CIVD responses between women and men, during exposure to different environmental conditions. METHODS: Seven men and seven women participated in a matched controlled study consisting of a familiarization protocol followed by three experimental sessions (cool (10.8 °C WBGT), thermoneutral (17.2 °C WBGT), and hot (27.2 °C WBGT)). In each session, participants were asked to immerse their left hand

Finger- and toe-temperature responses to local cooling and rewarming have limited predictive value identifying susceptibility to local cold injury-a cohort study in military cadets.

The purpose was to evaluate whether a cold-water immersion test could be used to identify individuals susceptible to local cold injuries (LCI). Sixty-five healthy non-injured (N-I) subjects, and fifteen subjects, who were tested either prior to or after a LCI, sequentially immersed one hand and one foot, in 8 °C water for 30 min (CWI phase); this was followed by 15 min of spontaneous rewarming (RW phase). The LCI group showed a lower toe temperature during the CWI phase, and a lower maximum RW temperature of the fingers than the N-I group. However, digit temperatures during the CWI and RW phas
