Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) is a paradoxical deterioration in the clinical status of a patient infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) on highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART). The prognosis of HIV-infected patients has dramatically improved since the advent of HAART. The immune recovery associated with HAART may result in immuno-pathological reactions and clinical deterioration when HAART is initiated in patients with tuberculosis (TB). This phenomenon is defined as immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS). In this review, we summarise the epidemiology, clinical presentations and management of TB-associated IRIS.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the ocular manifestations of immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome.
METHODS: Retrospective study. 372 patients were diagnosed as acquired immune deficiency syndrome from April 1997 to December 2012. OUTCOME: Response to supportive care along with Anti-tuberculosis treatment.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pandemic has disproportionately affected tropical regions of the world, where dermatoses, such as leprosy and leishmaniasis, rarely encountered in temperate climates, are endemic. Although the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has been lifesaving, a few patients undergoing HAART experience clinical deterioration caused by immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS).
