[Efficacy of specific immunoglobulin against TBE (author's transl)].

The efficacy of passive immunization against tickborne encephalitis (TBE) was evaluated in Vienna by means of a telephonic survey. It was learned that in 1979 after a tickbite in endemic areas, of TBE, approximately one out of 1,000 unvaccinated persons came down with the disease. Administration of TBE immunoglobulin after exposure reduced the incidence of the disease to 1:2,500. thus showing a rate of protection of approximately 60%. The survey also showed that in 1979 one third of those at risk (frequent walks in forests) had already undergone active immunization with the Austrian TBE vaccin

Maternal-driven immune education in offspring.

Maternal environmental exposures, particularly during gestation and lactation, significantly influence the immunological development and long-term immunity of offspring. Mammalian immune systems develop through crucial inputs from the environment, beginning in utero and continuing after birth. These critical developmental windows are essential for proper immune system development and, once closed, may not be reopened. This review focuses on the mechanisms by which maternal exposures, particularly to pathogens, diet, and microbiota, impact offspring immunity. Mechanisms driving maternal-offspri

Detection of airborne influenza a virus in experimentally infected pigs with maternally derived antibodies.

This study assessed whether recently weaned piglets with maternally derived antibodies were able to generate infectious influenza aerosols. Three groups of piglets were assembled based on the vaccination status of the dam. Sows were either non-vaccinated (CTRL) or vaccinated with the same (VAC-HOM) strain or a different (VAC-HET) strain to the one used for challenge. Piglets acquired the maternally derived antibodies by directly suckling colostrum from their respective dams. At weaning, pigs were challenged with influenza virus by direct contact with an infected pig (seeder pig) and clinical s

Length of intervals between epidemics: evaluating the influence of maternal transfer of immunity.

The length of intervals between epidemic outbreaks of infectious diseases is critical in epidemiology. In several species of marine mammals and birds, it is pivotal to also consider the life history of the species of concern, as the contact rate between individuals can have a seasonal flux, for example, due to aggregations during the breeding season. Recently, particular interest has been given to the role of the dynamics of immunity in determining the intervals between epidemics in wild animal populations. One potentially powerful, but often neglected, process in this context is the maternal

Dynamic Function and Composition Changes of Immune Cells During Normal and Pathological Pregnancy at the Maternal-Fetal Interface.

A successful pregnancy requires a fine-tuned and highly regulated balance between immune activation and embryonic antigen tolerance. Since the fetus is semi-allogeneic, the maternal immune system should exert tolerant to the fetus while maintaining the defense against infection. The maternal-fetal interface consists of different immune cells, such as decidual natural killer (dNK) cells, macrophages, T cells, dendritic cells, B cells, and NKT cells. The interaction between immune cells, decidual stromal cells, and trophoblasts constitute a vast network of cellular connections. A cellular immuno

The mother's immune system is a balanced threat to the foetus, turning to protection of the neonate.

UNLABELLED: Immunological tolerance by the mother prevents rejection of the foetus, but aberrations may increase risk of abnormalities like spontaneous abortion, or foetal growth restriction. The neonate is normally colonized with mother's gut microflora, mainly composed of protective anaerobes. This least threatening form of microbial colonization of the neonate, is impaired by sectio delivery, but supported by breastfeeding. Mother's transplacental IgG, secretory IgA and other milk components help protect the neonate together with its own slowly expanding immune system. CONCLUSION: The moth

The effect of herd-level passive immunity in dairy farms on survival probability during the first year of life.

This study examined the impact of passive immunity at the herd level on survival probability during the first year of life for successful passive immunity (SPI) farms (n=19), <20% of the proportion of newborn calves with serum immunoglobulin (Ig) G concentrations of <10.0 g/L, and failure of passive immunity (FPI) farms (n=20) with ≥20%. The proportions of serum IgG concentrations on SPI farms were clearly shifted toward the high-concentration strata compared with FPI farms. SPI farms showed significantly (P<0.001) higher survival probability than FPI farms. These results suggest that having t

Population dynamics in echinococcosis and cysticercosis: regulation of Taenia hydatigena and T. ovis in lambs through passively transferred immunity.

A comparison has been made of the interactions between passively transferred and actively acquired immunity in regulating populations of Taenia hydatigena and T. ovis. When ewes were grazed prior to parturition under a high infection pressure, immunity was transferred to their offspring for up to 8 weeks. A qualitative difference between the species was the destruction of larval T. ovis prior to their establishment ('pre-encystment immunity') and that of T. hydatigena after they had become established ('post-encystment immunity') in the challenged lambs. The major difference in terms of popula
