Incidental extracolonic findings at CT colonography.

PURPOSE: To determine the frequency of extracolonic findings at computed tomographic (CT) colonography and the effect of these findings on subsequent patient treatment and cost. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Conventional transverse CT colonographic scans in 264 consecutive patients were evaluated independently by two radiologists. Extracolonic findings were classified as having high, moderate, or low clinical importance. The effect of CT findings on patient treatment was assessed with chart review. The cost of additional examinations was calculated by using 1999 Medicare reimbursements. RESULTS: Th

Incidental maternal findings on fetal MRI.

AIM: To evaluate the type and frequency of maternal findings incidentally identified during fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective single-centre study was undertaken which included all consecutive fetal MRI studies performed between July 2017 and May 2021 at a tertiary institution. Two fellowship-trained radiologists reviewed the studies independently to determine the type and frequency of incidental maternal findings of both no clinical significance (requiring no further follow-up) and of clinical significance (requiring further follow-up, work-up, and

Large incidental esophageal leiomyoma: Radiological findings.

Benign tumors of the esophagus are rare, the most common of them being leiomyomas. Malignant transformation is extremely rare, and they are often asymptomatic. Tumors larger than 5 cm frequently cause symptoms such as epigastric discomfort, heartburn, or dysphagia. We describe the case of a 57-year-old male with the presumptive diagnosis of esophageal leiomyoma, asymptomatic and incidentally discovered on a chest radiograph. The computerized tomography demonstrated an isodense and well-demarcated lesion from the esophagus, and the upper endoscopy confirmed an intact mucosa. The lesion has been

Incidental findings on renal MR angiography.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to assess the incidence of incidental vascular and nonvascular findings in patients undergoing renal MR angiography and to determine the extent to which these findings alter patient management. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Reports from 380 consecutive renal MR angiography examinations performed at a single institution over a 12-month interval were examined. The presence of incidental vascular (i.e., nonrenal artery) and nonvascular findings was noted. Clinical records of patients with significant incidental findings were examined to determine whether additi…

Breast implants: incidental findings on CT.

The mammographic, sonographic, and MR appearances of both normal and abnormal breast implants have been described. Breast implants are occasionally seen on chest CT scans obtained for other reasons; however, we know of no published reports on the CT findings in a series of patients with breast implants. We present a retrospective review of CT findings in 18 patients with 27 breast implants that illustrates the spectrum of findings that can be seen in asymptomatic patients.

Incidental Finding of Arteria Lusoria.

The arteria lusoria or retroesophageal right subclavian artery is the most common malformation of the aortic arch. It may be discovered with some symptoms of airway and/or esophageal compression, such as dyspnea or dysphagia, but in most cases it is an asymptomatic pathology. We report a case of a 3 months old patient diagnosed with Down syndrome who was admitted for pulmonary infection with incidental finding of retrooesophageal right subclavian artery.

Rhinolith: An incidental radiographic finding.

Rhinoliths are foreign bodies composed of mineralised deposits in the nasal cavity that are rarely encountered in routine dental practice. The current report presents a case of a 77-year-old female patient who visited a dental treatment centre for a routine dental check-up and prophylaxis. On the clinical examination, the patient did not report any breathing difficulty, nasal obstruction, or any form of discharge. Panoramic radiography showed a horizontally magnified radiopaque structure in the right nasal fossa region. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) revealed a hyperdense entity with a l

Intracranial aneurysm as an incidental finding.

This report presents an incidental finding of a potentially life-threatening large fusiform aneurysm of the internal carotid artery at the level of the posterior communicating artery in a patient who reported with complaints relating to the presence of a radiolucent lesion in the mandible that was diagnosed as odontogenic keratocyst. This case highlights the need to study a case in detail in preparation for prescribing the appropriate advanced imaging modality examination, and also to carefully evaluate the entire imaged volume for incidental pathology and not just the region of interest. This

Autoimmune oophoritis. An incidental finding.

A case of autoimmune oophoritis is reported. A 41-year-old woman had a total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy for menorrhagia, polymenorrhoea and cystic ovaries. The diagnosis of autoimmune oophoritis was not suspected clinically, and was an unexpected histological finding in the ovaries. The gross and histological appearances of this rare condition are described, and the lymphoid infiltrate characterised by immunocytochemistry. Recognition of this condition by pathologists is important, as there is an associated risk of developing other autoimmune disease, even some

[Gallbladder carcinoma as an incidental finding].

Between March 1982 and December 1990, 903 patients underwent elective cholecystectomy. In 40 patients cholecystectomy was performed for gallbladder carcinoma. 15 malignomas (1.7%) were found incidentally. Preoperatively no anamnestic or diagnostic tumor signs were found in this group of patients. An en-bloc-resection of the gallbladder with resection of the bordering liver segments was performed when gallbladder carcinoma was diagnosed intraoperatively. When the diagnosis was established by postoperative histology, a relaparotomy with liver resection and lymphnode-dissection was done, except i
