Ag0.8In2.4Te4 (= AgIn3Te5) and Ag0.5In2.5Te4 (= AgIn5Te8) form solid solutions with CdIn2Te4, which are interesting as materials for photovoltaics or with respect to their thermoelectric properties. The corresponding crystal structures are related to the chalcopyrite type. The production of indium-tin oxide has increased during the past decade, owing to the increased manufacture of liquid-crystal panels, especially in Japan. We carried out a medical checkup including high resolution CT (HRCT), pulmonary function test, KL-6, SP-D and serum indium concentration, for 40 men (mean age 40.4 +/- 12.4 years old) working in an indium plant. Experiments on the rat indicate that intravenous administration of indium chloride produces severe hepatic necroses with fatal icterus within a few days. These actions can be prevented by the prophylactic administration of ferric dextran. This protective effect of the iron compound must be largely specific since it could not be duplicated by pretreatment with any of a large series of other agents. The possible mechanism of the protective effect is briefly discussed.

Indium-tin oxide production has increased greatly in the last 20 years subsequent to increased global demand for touch screens and photovoltaics. Previous studies used measurements of indium in blood as an indicator of indium exposure and observed associations with adverse respiratory outcomes. However, correlations between measurements of blood indium and airborne respirable indium are inconsistent, in part because of the long half-life of indium in blood, but also because respirable indium measurements do not incorporate inhalable indium that can contribute to the observed biological burden.
