[Infectious mastitis: a new solution for an old problem].

Mastitis is an inflammation of one or several mammal lobes accompanied or not by a mammary gland infection (WHO 2000). The most frequent etiology is infectious, and the highest prevalence period in women is breast-feeding time. The incidence varies from 2 to 33% according to different authors, being more frequent in primiparous women and during the early postpartum weeks. There are other breast inflammatory processes related etiologies, unrelated to breastfeeding, such as neoplasms or trauma to which no reference is made at this time, since the primary objective of this work is focused on infe

Histomorphological and Immunohistochemical Analysis of Pleural Neoplasms.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Primary pleural neoplasms are rare entities compared with the pleural involvement by metastatic carcinoma. The current study aimed at investigating the complete spectrum of pleural neoplasms and differentiating between them with the aid of immunohistochemistry (IHC). METHODS: Consecutive pleural biopsy specimens positive for a neoplasm, both primary and metastatic, were included in the study. Diagnosis or a differential diagnosis was suggested on histopathology confirmed by a panel of IHC markers such ascytokeratin(AE1/AE3), epithelial membrane antigen (EMA),vimentin, c

Primary Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumour of the Breast: A Potential Diagnostic Pitfall on Aspiration Cytology.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour (IMT) is an uncommon mesenchymal neoplasm with intermediate malignant potential, typically arising in the lungs, abdomen, or retroperitoneum. Breast involvement is extremely rare, with limited reported cases. To the best of our knowledge, less than 50 cases of this lesion in the breast have been reported to date and cytological descriptions are very rare. A 47-year-old female presented with a painless mass in the right breast. Imaging revealed a well-defined lobulated soft tissue mass categorised as BIRADS 4A. The cytomorphologic features on fine needle aspi

Why diagnosing inflammatory breast cancer is hard and how to overcome the challenges: a narrative review.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this narrative review is to summarize the contributors to misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis of inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) and strategies for expedient diagnosis. BACKGROUND: Patients with IBC often report the disease as initially being misdiagnosed, most commonly as mastitis. METHODS: We reviewed the literature on this challenging diagnosis by using sequential PubMed search criteria including IBC breast symptoms, IBC diagnosis, and IBC imaging modalities to augment the authors' knowledge of IBC. Other references were added from the manuscripts identified in th

Autoimmune glial fibrillary acidic protein astrocytopathy associated with breast cancer: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) astrocytopathy (GFAP-A) is an autoimmune inflammatory central nervous system disorder characterized by the detection of autoantibodies that recognize GFAP in CSF. The pathogenesis of GFAP-A is poorly understood. Some patients had a neoplasm detected and GFAP expressed by neoplasms is plausible as immunogen triggering paraneoplastic neurological autoimmunity. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of 76-year-old female patient with GFAP-A complicated with breast cancer. She presented with altered consciousness, nuchal rigidity, speech

[Dermatomyositis as the first manifestation of small cell carcinoma: case report and literature review].

Dermatomyositis is an autoimmune inflammatory myopathy associated with dermatologic findings. Its association with neoplasms is widely reported and has been shown to be higher in lung cancer, particularly small-cell carcinoma, probably as it originates from neuroendocrine cell precursors, as well as breast and ovarian cancer. The low frequency of dermatomyositis makes it difficult to suspect the underlying lesions among the diagnostic possibilities of systemic diseases with cutaneous manifestations. Therefore, the high probability of a neoplasm should always be considered, with reports of up t

Nipple-sparing Mastectomy: What the Radiologist Should Know.

Nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) is increasingly offered to patients undergoing treatment of breast cancer and prophylaxis treatment for reduction of breast cancer risk. NSM is considered oncologically safe for appropriately selected patients and is associated with improved cosmetic outcomes and quality of life. Accepted indications for NSM have expanded in recent years, and currently only inflammatory breast cancer or malignancy involving the nipple is considered an absolute contraindication. Neoplasms close to and involving the nipple areolar complex are common, and cancer of the lactiferous

The Surgical Treatment of Bilateral Accessory Extensor Carpi Ulnaris: Case Report and Literature Review.

Primary breast tuberculosis (TB) is a rare extrapulmonary TB mainly affecting young women of childbearing age from endemic countries. Its incidence is increasing in immunocompromised and HIV-infected people and with the emergence of drug-resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). There are no specific clinical signs suggestive of this disease, it often presents as a hard mass or breast abscess. There is an overlap of features with other inflammatory, infectious, benign lesions, fat necrosis and malignant neoplasms of the breast. The detection of MTB remains the gold standard for di

The surgical management of pediatric breast masses.

Information regarding the surgical management of breast masses in the pediatric age group is sparse and is primarily directed at unusual neoplasms. We have reviewed the surgical treatment of 50 patients with inflammatory and neoplastic breast masses occurring in a 15-year period (1957 to 1973) at the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. There were 42 girls and 8 boys, ranging in age from 12 days to 18 years. All patients had either surgical excision or incision and drainage of the masses with a subsequent histologic diagnosis. A variety of pathologic entities were encountered, but there were no

Multiple lesions of the spleen: differential diagnosis of cystic and solid lesions.

Lesions in the spleen may be encountered in a variety of clinical settings ranging from asymptomatic patients to patients who are critically ill. Etiologies for multifocal splenic lesions include infectious and inflammatory processes, primary vascular and lymphoid neoplasms, metastatic disease, vascular processes, and systemic diseases. There is often overlap in the imaging appearance alone, so the clinical setting is very helpful in differential diagnosis. In the immunocompromised patient, multiple small splenic lesions usually represent disseminated fungal disease and microabscesses. The spl

Anaplastic lymphoma kinase-positive inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the breast: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Few reports of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) of the breast have been published worldwide. Furthermore, primary anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-positive IMT of the breast is extremely rare. To date, only six patients with ALK-positive IMT have been reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old woman underwent a medical examination, and a left breast mass was detected. She did not feel a mass in her chest. Mammography showed a focal asymmetric density at the lower outer portion of the left breast. Breast ultrasonography showed a 1.2-cm hypoechoic lesion wi

[COX-2 inhibitors in cancer prevention].

Chemoprevention of cancer is a reality today. Prevention of breast cancer with tamoxifen, of squamous cell skin cancer with actinic keratosis by diclofenac gel and in familial polyposis with anti-inflammatory drug (COX-2) celecoxib is considered of health care clinical use. The latter has received enormous attention by cancer investigators due to the attractiveness of its action mechanism and its possibilities of future clinical use in different neoplasms. Other anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and sulindac also have a proven role in chemoprevention of cancer by cycloosygenase inhibitio

Clinical evidence of the relationship between aspirin and breast cancer risk (review).

In the search for new therapeutic alternatives against cancer, either as a preventive treatment or for advanced stages, it is common to appeal to well-known drugs used for the treatment of other diseases that may interfere with the metabolic pathways involved in carcinogenesis. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) display anticancer activity through the inhibition of the COX-2 enzyme, triggering processes such as apoptosis, a reduction in proliferation and inhibition of carcinogenesis. Breast cancer is a neoplasm with the highest incidence and mortality rate among young women worldwi

Novel insights into rosacea's role in cancer risk: A Mendelian randomization approach.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Chronic inflammation has been shown to promote cancer progression. Rosacea is indeed a long-term inflammatory skin condition and had been reported to link with increased risk for several types of malignancies, but evidence for causality is lacking. OBJECTIVES: To systematically estimate the causal relationship between rosacea and several types of cancer, including cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM), cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC), basal cell carcinoma (BCC), actinic keratosis (AK), thyroid cancer, breast cancer, glioma and hepatic cancer, as well as explore the potential

Carcinoma of the breast with multinucleated reactive stromal giant cells. A light and electron microscopic study of two cases.

Two unusual carcinomas of the breast are described, containing nests of infiltrating neoplasm situated within stromal lacunar spaces, and surrounded by numerous benign appearing multinucleated giant cells. Within the stroma, there was extensive hemorrhage, hemosiderin pigment deposition, and large numbers of mononucleated inflammatory cells. The morphology of both tumors resembled the giant cell tumor of bone. Although a similar giant cell reaction has recently been described in association with a uterine leiomyosarcoma, we are aware of only two other examples of this entity in the breast, bot

Inflammatory breast cancer: Epidemiologic data and therapeutic results.

Since the early description more than a century ago, inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) remains an aggressive disease, with a different geographic repartition, with the highest ones incidence reported in the North of Africa (Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, and Egypt), and the lowest incidence in Western countries (USA, Europe…). In this study, we reviewed the literature using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database compared to other published series. We observed that in the high incidence areas (North of Africa) when compared to "classical" breast cancer, IBC was associated to

Granular cell tumour of the breast: An uncommon benign lesion with suspicious radiological features. Case report and literature review.

Granular cell tumour is an uncommon benign lesion of neural lineage, associated with ATP6AP1 and ATP6AP2 inactivating mutations (endosomal pH regulators). These tumours typically develop in the head and neck region, particularly in the tongue, and are rarely found in the mammary gland, with an estimated incidence of 1:1000 of all breast tumours. They have similar clinical and radiological features, that usually mimic malignant lesions with spiculated margins. Histologically, they present a characteristic morphology, which may require differential diagnosis from other granular cell entities, in

Identification of atopic dermatitis-associated diseases based on the National health and nutrition examination survey (NHANES) 2013-2018.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common chronic inflammatory skin disease. Massive cohort studies revealed that AD was associated with allergic diseases, inflammatory diseases, autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and mental disorders. We comprehensively and systematically analyzed the correlation between AD and diseases to identify AD-associated diseases (ADADs). We involved 17,924 individuals from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2013-2018) dataset, and analyzed the correlation between AD and 422 diseases classified by International Classification of

Cancer cellulitis.

We have described a case of inflammatory carcinoma involving the skin of the inguinal region in a man with rectal carcinoma. This type of metastatic lesion is most often associated with carcinoma of the breast, but may also be a manifestation of lung, pancreatic, or gastrointestinal neoplasms. The diagnosis should be suspected when a patient with cellulitis is afebrile and has a normal white blood cell count. An additional clue is that the leading edge of the cellulitis may be raised as in erysipelas. Empiric antibiotic treatment is recommended until the diagnosis is confirmed by punch biopsy
