Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is an evidence-based and globally accepted treatment for depression among adults and adolescents. In this article, we provide a review of the literature on IPT and its briefer counterpart, interpersonal counseling (IPC), for use with adults and adolescents. We provide a history of IPT's development; an overview of IPT, IPC, and IPT for adolescents (IPT-A); a review of meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and studies conducted in the past decade; and a summary of developments in novel technologies. IPT has shown moderate to large effects in treating depression. D

Early sessions from three variants of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) were examined to replicate work done in psychodynamic-interpersonal treatments linking interpersonal process to outcome (W. P. Henry, T. E. Schacht, & H. H. Strupp, 1986, 1990). Cases were available from a component study of CBT for generalized anxiety disorder (T. D. Borkovec, M. G. Newman, A. L. Pincus, & R. Lytle, 2002) and were selected to form good and poor outcome groups maintained through a 1-year follow-up. A third group was also examined that had initial positive outcomes and marked decline by follow-up (n = 8 fo

The process of monitoring treatment outcome, also known as "client feedback," is increasingly becoming a recommended practice for psychotherapy. One concern, however, is how to integrate such a process into the work that psychotherapists typically do. Three clinical examples are presented, illustrating how a client feedback system can be used in conjunction with a specific theoretical framework, interpersonal process therapy (Teyber, 2006). The examples highlight that client feedback not only can be of minimal disruption to the psychotherapy process, but may also offer the potential to augment

Although poor partner support is a key risk factor for depression in pregnant and postpartum women, partners are not generally involved in treatment beyond psychoeducation. The aim of this "proof of concept" study was to test safety, acceptability, and feasibility of Partner-Assisted Interpersonal Psychotherapy (PA-IPT), an intervention that includes the partner as an active participant throughout treatment. Women more than 12 weeks estimated gestational age and less than 12 weeks postpartum were invited to participate if they fulfilled DSM-IV criteria for Major Depressive Disorder and reporte

In the realm of precision psychiatry of mood disorders, the evolution of interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is gaining momentum, necessitating a personalized approach that also takes into account cultural aspects. This study underscores the importance of incorporating cultural factors into the dissemination and application of IPT in Asia. Through a comprehensive analysis of a case illuminating how cultural influences impact the onset and treatment outcomes of depression, we emphasize the critical need for culturally informed IPT practices in China. This personalized approach not only enhances t

A single-arm pilot study explored the feasibility of adapting in Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) by telephone to reduce psychological distress and to enhance coping during cancer treatment. Therapy focuses on role transitions, interpersonal conflicts, and grief precipitated by cancer. Breast cancer patients receiving high-dose chemotherapy received weekly sessions with a psychologist throughout chemotherapy and for 1 month afterwards. Patients could invite one 'partner' to receive individual telephone IPT. Psychosocial functioning was assessed using standardized measures at study entry, afte

The most prevalent disordered eating pattern described in overweight youth is loss of control (LOC) eating, during which individuals experience an inability to control the type or amount of food they consume. LOC eating is associated cross-sectionally with greater adiposity in children and adolescents and seems to predispose youth to gain weight or body fat above that expected during normal growth, thus likely contributing to obesity in susceptible individuals. No prior studies have examined whether LOC eating can be decreased by interventions in children or adolescents without full-syndrome e

Importance: Extensively researched, exposure-focused therapies have dominated the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). No treatment benefits all patients. Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), a nonexposure, affect-focused treatment, has emerged over 2 decades as an alternative evidence-based PTSD intervention. Objective: This narrative review critically assesses IPT outcomes for PTSD. Time limited IPT focuses on affect toleration and the interpersonal consequences of trauma rather than on reconstructing the trauma narrative and exposure to traumatic cues. Evidence Review: The autho

We employed standard literature search techniques and surveyed participants on the International Society for Interpersonal Psychotherapy listserve (isiptlist@googlegroups.com) to catalogue the multiple and highly creative ways in which Klerman's and Weissman's original concept of interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) has been modified to meet the needs of a vast range of patient populations. Focusing first on adaptations of the individual treatment model for subgroups of adult patients, we next describe further adaptations of four major off-shoots of IPT: interpersonal counseling (IPC), IPT for ad

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) has demonstrated efficacy in treating mood and eating disorders. This article critically reviews outcome research testing IPT for anxiety disorders, a diagnostic area where cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has dominated research and treatment.
METHODS: A literature search identified six open and five controlled trials of IPT for social anxiety disorder (SAD), panic disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder.
RESULTS: Studies were generally small, underpowered, and sometimes methodologically compromised. Nonetheless, minimally adapted from its

Patients whose depression is complicated by a lifetime history of panic symptoms display a poorer treatment response to both psychotherapeutic and pharmacologic interventions. A newly adapted psychosocial treatment for depression with lifetime panic spectrum symptoms was evaluated in an open pilot study.

Interpersonal synchrony is the dynamic coordination of two individuals over time, reflected in the alignment of their actions, emotions, thoughts, and physiological processes. Interpersonal synchrony is a core mechanism associated with therapeutic alliance and treatment outcomes in psychotherapy. However, given the largely correlational nature of current literature, manipulation of synchrony is essential in order to reveal its potential causal relationships with therapeutic relationships in psychotherapy. Despite growing recognition of its clinical significance, synchrony remains difficult to

BACKGROUND: Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide and disproportionately affects women during the perinatal period. Although Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is supported as an effective treatment, access to IPT in routine care remains limited.
AIMS: This project implemented a nurse-led virtual IPT intervention and compared outcomes between group and individual formats to evaluate the feasibility of this intervention for improving care quality.
METHODS: This quality improvement project was conducted at the Maternal Outpatient Mental Health Services (MOMS) Clinic in Los Ang

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a psychological intervention with established efficacy in the prevention and treatment of depressive disorders. Previous systematic reviews have not evaluated the effectiveness of IPT on symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, quality of life, relationship satisfaction/quality, social supports, and an improved psychological sense of wellbeing. There is limited information regarding moderating and mediating factors that impact the effectiveness of IPT such as the timing of the intervention or the mode of delivery of IPT intervention. The overall

BACKGROUND: Multisomatoform disorder is characterised by severe and disabling bodily symptoms, and pain is one of the most common and impairing of these. Furthermore, these bodily symptoms cannot be explained by an underlying organic disorder. Patients with multisomatoform disorder are commonly found at all levels of healthcare and are typically difficult to treat for physicians as well as for mental health specialists.
AIMS: To test whether brief psychodynamic interpersonal therapy (PIT) effectively improves the physical quality of life in patients who have had multisomatoform disorder for a

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition that engenders both symptomatic distress and severe disruption in interpersonal and social functioning. Most of the empirical research on treatment has emphasized interventions that aim to alleviate the symptoms of PTSD, despite the persisting impairments in social, occupational, and interpersonal functioning. In clinical practice, achieving relief from symptoms such as irritability or phobic avoidance is a worthwhile goal, yet significant distress and disability derived from disruptions to interpersonal attachments, social networks, and conf

Rates of recurrent depression peak among women in their childbearing years, yet a large number of these women are not treated or do not seek maintenance treatment between episodes. Barriers to treatment include time constraints, demands of child care, and finances. A method for improving access to treatment of depression may be delivery of psychotherapy over the telephone. A 12-week pilot controlled clinical trial with random assignment was conducted to test the feasibility and efficacy of Interpersonal Psychotherapy delivered over the telephone (IPT-T) for depression in women (N=15 IPT-T and
