Whose crazy investment in sex?

By probing the processes of exclusion of transsexuals from the political sphere, this article offers contributions to social and political theory through an examination of the processes of exclusion from the category "human." This article considers how the erasure of investment in their own embodied sex constructs a platform from which to blame others for sex/gender variance, as well as to justify that blaming. Bringing together Giorgio Agamben, Georges Bataille, Judith Butler, and Nikolas Rose with transphobia, medicalization in psychiatry, law, and ethopolitics, this article questions whose

A Theory of Cuteness as Developmental Investment.

What is the evolutionary function of cuteness? Research on cuteness originated with the study of juvenile morphology following Lorenz's Kindchenschema proposal, which identified specific cues of juvenility that reliably elicit a distinctive affective response. Because juvenile cues activate protective responses typically associated with vulnerability and distress (e.g., compassion, harm avoidance), cuteness has often been interpreted as an emotion whose primary function is protection. However, this leaves a key pattern unexplained: children are perceived as cutest not when they are helpless, b

Investing in Africa's scientific future.

Africa bears a disproportionate burden of infectious diseases, accounting for a substantial percentage of global cases. Malaria, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, cholera, Ebola, Lassa fever, and other tropical diseases, such as dengue and chikungunya, have had a profound impact on morbidity and mortality. Various factors contribute to the higher prevalence and incidence of infectious diseases in Africa, including socioeconomic challenges, limited access to health care, inadequate sanitation and hygiene infrastructure, climate-related factors, and endemicity of certain diseases in specific regions. Placentation and maternal investment in mammals.

The mammalian placenta exhibits striking interspecific morphological variation, yet the implications of such diversity for reproductive strategies and fetal development remain obscure. More invasive hemochorial placentas, in which fetal tissues directly contact the maternal blood supply, are believed to facilitate nutrient transfer, resulting in higher fetal growth rates, and to be a state of relative fetal advantage in the evolution of maternal-offspring conflict. The extent of interdigitation between maternal and fetal tissues has received less attention than invasiveness but is also potenti

How to invest in social capital.

Business runs better when people within a company have close ties and trust one another. But the relationships that make organizations work … capital. The authors describe how managers can help their organizations thrive by making effective investments in social capital. For instance, companies that value social capital demonstrate a commitment to retention as a way of limiting workplace volatility. The authors cite SAS's extensive efforts to signal to employees that it sees them as human beings, …

The Women's Health Trial as an investment.

The Women's Health Trial (WHT), a large, multi-unit randomized controlled trial, would have cost a total of $130 million to test the hypothesis that a 50% reduction in the percentage of calories from dietary fat would yield a detectable reduction in breast cancer incidence. However, the WHT was discontinued because evidence to support the hypothesized relationship between dietary fat and breast cancer was judged insufficient to justify the trial. The analysis presented here was undertaken in order to contribute an economic perspective on this issue. Principles of decision analysis and cost-eff

Images of eyes enhance investments in a real-life public good.

A key issue in cooperation research is to determine the conditions under which individuals invest in a public good. Here, we tested whether cues of being watched increase investments in an anonymous public good situation in real life. We examined whether individuals would invest more by removing experimentally placed garbage (paper and plastic bottles) from bus stop benches in Geneva in the presence of images of eyes compared to controls (images of flowers). We provided separate bins for each of both types of garbage to investigate whether individuals would deposit more items into the appropri…

Evaluating investments in typhoid vaccines in two slums in Kolkata, India.

New-generation vaccines against typhoid fever have the potential to reduce the burden of disease in areas where the disease is endemic. The case for public expenditure on typhoid Vi polysaccharide vaccines for two low-income, high-incidence slums (Narkeldanga and Tiljala) in Kolkata, India, was examined. Three measures of the economic benefits of the vaccines were used: private and public cost-of-illness (COI) avoided; avoided COI plus mortality risk-reduction benefits; and willingness-to-pay (WTP) derived from stated preference (contingent valuation) studies conducted in Tiljala in 2004. Experimental ammonia-free phosphate-bonded investments using Mg(H2PO4)2 solution.

In our previous study, we investigated ammonia-free phosphate-bonded investments using Mg (H2PO4)2 powder. The purpose of the present study was to attempt usage of 50 wt% Mg (H2PO4)2 solution instead of powder. Magnesium oxide (MgO) was prepared as a binder and cristobalite was selected as a refractory. After arranging six kinds of experimental investments (A-F) with different cristobalite/MgO ratios, the fundamental properties of the dental investments were examined. The properties of the molds were influenced by the amount of MgO. Decreases in MgO showed lower mold strengths, longer setting …

Low- and middle-income countries with seasonal influenza immunization programs, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic were able to deliver vaccines … ustainable level during non-crisis periods) for honing emergency response readiness in vaccination, investments in areas more specific to pandemic preparedness remain a need. Regional variations in readiness and opportunities for cooperation should also be explored.

PEPFAR's investments in NPHIs can leverage other investments in global health security.

Private health investments under competing risks: Evidence from malaria control in Senegal.

This study exploits the introduction of high subsidies for anti-malaria products in Senegal in 2009 to investigate whether malaria prevents parents from investing in child health. A simple model of health investments under competing mortality risks predicts that private expenses to fight malaria and other diseases should increase in response to anti-malaria public interventions. We test and validate this prediction using original panel data from a household expenditure survey combined with geographical information on malaria prevalence. We find that health expenditures in malarious regions cat…

Investing in pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response.

If resources for public health and decision makers are limited, what are the highest-priority investments they can make? Drawing on the Disease Control Priorities report on pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response, in this Viewpoint we summarise our reflections and recommendations for the next decade in public health and focus on the highest return actions for pandemic preparedness, prevention, and response that countries can take to protect themselves and others. We identified 85 feasible national-level and local-level actions, categorising 40 of them as high-priority investments. At r…

Sleep: a good investment in health and safety.

Sleep management is critical to both good health and safety. Most people do not know how much sleep is needed and place themselves and sometime others at risk for medical problems and increased risk for injuries or fatal accidents. Sleep need is discussed and the amount of sleep required as a function of age is provided. Agriculture is a high-risk industry with many injury-related or fatal accidents. SLEEP Model, a Web-based simulation model, was used to predict increase in odds ratio for injuries for farmers and other professionals who tend to work with a buildup of sleep debt because of the

NIH Investment in HIV and Implementation Science.

INTRODUCTION: Research supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has revolutionized HIV prevention and treatment, but not all people have benefited from these advancements. Implementation science seeks to bridge the gap between a discovery and when it is applied in the real world, by elucidating the methods that promote the adoption, uptake and integration of evidence-based strategies into routine care. Disparities in who benefits from the advancements have prompted calls to accelerate HIV implementation science. This paper provides a snapshot of research funded by the NIH at the in
