[Prevention of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia in tropical areas].

Iron deficiency is the most widespread nutritional disease in the World. It is prevalent in tropical areas especially in pregnant women and children. The main cause in these areas is consumption of foods containing inhibitors of iron absorption resulting in insufficient bioavailability. In advanced stages of iron deficiency, low hemoglobin levels lead to anemia. Functional consequences of anemia depend on age including mental and physical retardation in children and work disability in adults. Although other disorders including parasitic, infectious, genetic, and nutritional diseases may be inv

Iron deficiency, iron deficiency anaemia and anaemia of inflammation - an overview.

Iron is an essential trace element for various cellular proteins and for biological processes in all cells. Severe iron deficiency (ID) impairs haem synthesis, reduces erythropoiesis and causes iron deficiency anaemia (IDA). Iron restriction in anaemia of inflammation is mainly due to retention of iron in macrophages. This condition is known as 'functional iron deficiency'. A review of studies performed in Europe shows that the prevalence of ID and IDA in young children varies by region. It is more common in eastern than western European countries. This overview summarises information on the n

Ferumoxytol for the treatment of iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anemia of pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: A litany of recent evidence supports the morbidity of intra-natal iron-deficiency anemia and its prodrome, iron deficiency. Oral iron administered during second and third trimesters does not get to the developing fetus if the mother is iron deficient. This is especially concerning as the rapidly developing fetal brain is in particular need of iron sufficiency. Intra-natal iron deficiency is associated with autism, schizophrenia and abnormal brain structure. The obstetrical literature reports an unacceptably high incidence of gastrointestinal adverse events with oral iron. The tim

Iron-refractory iron deficiency anemia.

Iron is essential for life because it is indispensable for several biological reactions, such as oxygen transport, DNA synthesis, and cell proliferation. Over the past few years, our understanding of iron metabolism and its regulation has changed dramatically. New disorders of iron metabolism have emerged, and the role of iron as a cofactor in other disorders has begun to be recognized. The study of genetic conditions such as hemochromatosis and iron-refractory iron deficiency anemia (IRIDA) has provided crucial insights into the molecular mechanisms controlling iron homeostasis. In the future

Malabsorption of iron in children with iron deficiency.

Inability to absorb oral iron is believed to be an extremely rare cause of therapeutic failure in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia. Six patients who had failed to respond to oral iron therapy were studied by a simple oral absorption test and contrasted with 25 patients with untreated iron deficiency anemia and 10 normal subjects. All six of the patients who were therapeutic failures demonstrated impaired iron absorption in the absence of other clinical evidence of gastrointestinal disease. In the 25 newly diagnosed patients with iron deficiency. 24 demonstrated elevated iron absorptions

The Evaluation of Iron Deficiency and Iron Overload.

BACKGROUND: In the western world, 10-15% of women of child-bearing age suffer from iron-deficiency anemia. Iron overload due to chronic treatment with blood transfusions or hereditary hemochromatosis is much rarer. METHODS: This review is based on pertinent publications retrieved by a selective search on the pathophysiology, clinical features, and diagnostic evaluation of iron deficiency and iron overload. RESULTS: The main causes of iron deficiency are malnutrition and blood loss. Its differential diagnosis includes iron-refractory iron deficiency anemia (IRIDA), a rare congenital disease i

[Iron supplementation in iron deficiency anaemia].

Iron deficiency anaemia is a common problem. The majority of patients are treated with oral iron supplements. The current recommended dosage for oral supplementation of 200 mg ferrous fumarate 3x per day however, is based on a single small study of poor quality. There is no consensus concerning parenteral dosing. In recent years, new insights have been gained regarding both the dosage of oral supplementation and the indication for parenteral supplementation. Oral therapy is preferred. In principle, 100 mg ferrous fumarate once a day is sufficient for the treatment of symptom-free patients with

[Iron-refractory iron deficiency anemia].

The major causes of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) include iron loss due to bleeding, increased iron requirements, and decreased iron absorption by the intestine. The most common cause of IDA in Japanese women is iron loss during menstruation. Autoimmune atrophic gastritis and Helicobacter pylori infection can also cause IDA by reducing intestinal iron absorption. In addition to these common etiologies, germline mutations of TMPRSS6 can cause iron-refractory IDA (IRIDA). TMPRSS6 encodes matriptase-2, a membrane-bound serine protease primarily expressed in the liver. Functional loss of matriptase

Iron refractory iron deficiency anemia.

Iron refractory iron deficiency anemia is a hereditary recessive anemia due to a defect in the TMPRSS6 gene encoding Matriptase-2. This protein is a transmembrane serine protease that plays an essential role in down-regulating hepcidin, the key regulator of iron homeostasis. Hallmarks of this disease are microcytic hypochromic anemia, low transferrin saturation and normal/high serum hepcidin values. The anemia appears in the post-natal period, although in some cases it is only diagnosed in adulthood. The disease is refractory to oral iron treatment but shows a slow response to intravenous iron

Iron homeostasis and nutritional iron deficiency.

Nonheme food ferritin (FTN) iron minerals, nonheme iron complexes, and heme iron contribute to the balance between food iron absorption and body iron homeostasis. Iron absorption depends on membrane transporter proteins DMT1, PCP/HCP1, ferroportin (FPN), TRF2, and matriptase 2. Mutations in DMT1 and matriptase-2 cause iron deficiency; mutations in FPN, HFE, and TRF2 cause iron excess. Intracellular iron homeostasis depends on coordinated regulation of iron trafficking and storage proteins encoded in iron responsive element (IRE)-mRNA. The noncoding IRE-mRNA structures bind protein repressors,

Severity of neurodegeneration correlates with compromise of iron metabolism in mice with iron regulatory protein deficiencies.

In mammals, iron regulatory proteins 1 and 2 (IRP1 and IRP2) posttranscriptionally regulate expression of several iron metabolism proteins including ferritin and transferrin receptor. Genetically engineered mice that lack IRP2, but have the normal complement of IRP1, develop adult-onset neurodegenerative disease associated with inappropriately high expression of ferritin in degenerating neurons. Here, we report that mice that are homozygous for a targeted deletion of IRP2 and heterozygous for a targeted deletion of IRP1 (IRP1+/- IRP2-/-) develop a much more severe form of neurodegeneration, ch

[Iron metabolism and iron-refractory iron deficiency anemia].

Hepcidin is a key molecule that regulates iron metabolism in the body. Iron refractory iron deficiency anemia (IRIDA) is a genetic disorder caused by a defect in the TMPRSS6 gene encoding matriptase-2, a transmembrane serine protease that physiologically inhibits hepcidin production. In patients with IRIDA, the iron uptake in the intestine is remarkably reduced, and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) develops. However, in contrast to the ordinary IDA, high hepcidin levels in IRIDA keep the serum ferritin levels normal or sometimes high. Due to the malabsorption of iron in the intestine, IRIDA is ref

Magnesium and iron deficiencies alter Cd accumulation in Salix viminalis L.

Evidence exists that Cd and certain nutrient elements, such as Fe and Mg, could share similar mechanisms of plant uptake and accumulation. Here we report that Mg and Fe deficiency in mature plants of Salix viminalis, grown in hydroponic solutions containing 5 µg ml(-1) of Cd, caused a significant increase in Cd accumulation in roots, stems and leaves. Cd (µg g(-1) dry weight) was determined following three treatments: 1) Cd treatment in complete nutrient solution; 2) Cd treatment with Fe deficiency; and 3) Cd treatment with Mg deficiency, yielding, respectively: in young leaves (65.3, 76.1, an

Fatty acid pattern of tissue phospholipids in copper and iron deficiencies.

Because copper and iron have been reported to be essential cofactors in delta 9 desaturation of fatty acids, the effects of different dietary intakes of copper and iron on tissue fatty acids were studied. Male Long-Evans rats (ten per group) were fed diets containing adequate, deficient or excess copper or iron. On day 42 of the dietary regimen, the animals were killed and tissues and blood were removed for analysis of metals and fatty acids of phospholipids. Compared with the copper-adequate rats, the copper-deficient rats showed increased 18:0 in liver and decreased 16:1 omega 7 in liver, he
