Earlobe keloids are a challenging management problem. These benign, fibrous proliferations develop in predisposed persons at sites of cutaneous injury or as the result of ear piercing, burns or surgical procedures. Earlobe keloids usually appear as shiny, smooth, globular growths on one or both sides of the earlobe. Patients frequently complain of cosmetic embarrassment, but also may report pruritus, pain or paresthesias. No single therapeutic modality is best. The location, size, depth and duration of the earlobe keloid influence the choice of therapy. Surgical treatment for earlobe keloids g…

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Keloid is a healing disorder that occurs exclusively in humans. This pathology is considered a benign cicatricial neoplasm, whose physiopathogenesis has not yet completely clarified. Its disfiguring appearance often could potentially cause a disturbance in the patient regarding his/her body image. The objective is to evaluate the impact of keloid on body image.
METHODS: 61 patients with keloid in socially exposed regions of the body were included. The participants were submitted to clinical evaluation, composed of anamnesis and physical examination, and answered two que…

Wound healing is a fundamental complex-tissue reaction leading to skin reconstitution and thereby ensuring survival. While, fetal wounds heal without scarring, a normal "fine line" scar is the clinical outcome of an undisturbed wound healing in adults. Alterations in the orchestrated wound healing process result in hypertrophic or keloid scarring. Research in the past decades attempted to identify genetic, cellular, and molecular factors responsible for these alterations. These attempts lead to several new developments in treatments for keloids, such as, imiquimod, inhibition of transforming g…

This rare mycosis is caused by Paracoccidiodis loboii and is found mainly among indians of the Amazon forest. It is a cutaneous disease. No visceral affection was ever described, though generalized skin disease has been reported. One case of cheloid paracoccidioidomycosis was studied with gallium-67. The radiopharmaceutical has accumulated in the affected area and in a lymph node, although adenomegaly be rare. Degree of accumulation was discrete/moderate but the patient had been under irregular treatment for 10 years. As no laboratorial data are evaluable for this affection, gallium-67 may rep

Bilateral corneal keloids in a boy wih Lowe's syndrome were examined by conventional light and electron microscopy. There were no signs of perforating corneal trauma or iridocorneal incarceration in either eye. The corneal keloids consisted of haphazardly arranged bundles of collagen fibers, fibroblasts, and fenestrated blood vessels. The anterior region of the keloids showed signs of active progression and epithelial epidermalization. The etiology of keloids in Lowe's syndrome remains obscure. Considerations include excessive local delivery of amino acids and unknown noxious substances throug…

BACKGROUND: Auricular keloids are common, but whether anatomic subsite identifies patients with broader keloid susceptibility remains uncertain. Because ear piercing can involve repeated local trauma and chronic inflammation, the anatomic subsite and inciting cause may be closely related. The authors explored whether the auricular subsite was associated with multisite keloid involvement.
METHODS: The authors reviewed 182 consecutive patients who underwent excision and postoperative radiotherapy for auricular keloids at a single tertiary center. Multisite involvement was defined as keloids at …

Keloids are benign skin tumors resulting from deregulated wound healing processes, characterized by fibroblast hyperactivity, increased collagen deposition, and resistance to apoptosis. These lesions extend beyond the original wound borders and often cause significant physical and psychological burdens, including pain, pruritus, and reduced self-esteem. Despite advancements in medical science, keloid management remains a challenge due to the lack of standardized treatment protocols and the high recurrence rates associated with many therapeutic options. This review examines the efficacy and lim…

Dear Editor, Cutaneous leiomyomas (CL) are rare, benign smooth muscle tumors of the skin (1). There are 3 subtypes with different origins an … ased in number. Family history was unremarkable. A punch biopsy was performed with pre-diagnoses of keloid and tumoral infiltration. Histopathologic examination showed neoplastic infiltration with large bundles of spindle-like smooth muscle cells with acidophilic cytoplasm under epidermis (Figure 2). Neoplastic cells were stained by smooth muscle markers …

Keloid disease is a benign, yet locally aggressive and recurrent cutaneous fibroproliferative condition characterised by excessive scarring. Unique to humans, keloids represent the end-point of a spectrum of abnormal wound healing, are aesthetically disfiguring and can cause major functional impairment. Its heterogeneous phenotype can confound clinical diagnosis leading to mismanagement. This review examines the histological morphology of keloid disease relative to the underlying pathobiology, places it in the context of other cutaneous fibroses and highlights gaps within the literature that h…

We describe an adolescent Peruvian male with marked, aggressive ingrowth of conjunctiva (pterygium-like) over the cornea associated with keloid formation on his distal limbs. He has in addition camptodactyly of all fingers and to some extent of his toes, and unusual skin pigmentations. He resembles an earlier described family from Norway in which a mother and two children showed a similar combination of signs. We present the follow-up of the Norwegian family. The entity resembles the Penttinen syndrome but can be differentiated due to the early aging in the latter, which is lacking in the pres…
