The therapeutical effect of keto acids on bone histology was investigated in a prospective randomized controlled study of 40 patients. A marked improvement in osteofibrotic as well as in osteomalacic changes was found in bone biopsies after 12 months of treatment with keto acids.

A number of 3-keto bile acids were synthesized by the selective oxidation of bile acid methyl esters with silver carbonate-Celite in refluxing toluene. The pure 3-keto bile acids were isolated simply by filtering the reaction mixture and concentrating the filtrate. The relation of the bile acid structure to the oxidation rate is also discussed.

In 62 blood samples from 3 patients with classical maple syrup urine disease and from one patient with a variant form, a close linear correlation was found between levels of branched chain amino acids and their corresponding alpha-keto acids. Keto acids were determined as O-trimethylsilyl quinoxalinols by gas chromatography with a nitrogen-selective detector.

A marked improvement of renal osteodystrophy was achieved after a combined treatment with keto acids and vitamin D in patients with chronic renal failure. Results were checked by histological investigations. The biochemical background of the successful treatment was analysed. A regression of hyperparathyroidism and improvement in vitamin D status are the cause of this phenomenon.

Leptomeningeal disease (LMD) occurs when tumors seed into the leptomeningeal space and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), leading to severe neurological deterioration and poor survival outcomes.
