POTENTIAL PREVENTIVE EFFECT OF LACTOBACILLUS ACIDOPHILUS AND LACTOBACILLUS PLANTARUM IN PATIENTS WITH POLYPS OR COLORECTAL CÂNCER.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer is one of the major causes of death worldwide. Many studies have been done on the biology of its formation as well as its treatment in recent years. One of the factors involved in the formation or treatment of this malignancy can be attributed to the microbial flora in the intestine. OBJECTIVE: This study investigate the potential preventive effect of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus plantarum in patients with polyps or colorectal cancer (CRC). METHODS: A total of 77 samples were selected in the form of three groups including individuals suffering fro…

Lactobacillus reuteri CRL1098 produces cobalamin.

We found that Lactobacillus reuteri CRL1098, a lactic acid bacterium isolated from sourdough, is able to produce cobalamin. The sugar-glycerol cofermentation in vitamin B(12)-free medium showed that this strain was able to reduce glycerol through a well-known cobalamin-dependent reaction with the formation of 1,3-propanediol as a final product. The cell extract of L. reuteri corrected the coenzyme B12 requirement of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. lactis ATCC 7830 and allowed the growth of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (metE cbiB) and Escherichia coli (metE) in minimal medium. Preli…

Antigenic analyses of Lactobacillus fermenti.

Antigenic analyses of Lactobacillus fermenti were carried out by double immunodiffusion in agar using extracts prepared with cold trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or hot dilute hydrochloric acid (HCL). A common antigen of L. fermenti, designated as antigen f by the author, was extracted from whole cells with dilute HCL, but not with TCA. The antigen f was also observed in Lactobacillus casei. In addition, all strains isolated from human saliva contained antigen 6 in their cell walls, while the antigen was not observed in most of the isolates from human feces. Therefore, L. fermenti could be divided …

Antibiotic Resistance of LACTOBACILLUS Strains.

The study provides phenotypic and molecular analyses of the antibiotic resistance in 20 Lactobacillus strains including 11 strains newly isolated from fermented plant material. According to the results of disc diffusion method, 90% of tested lactobacilli demonstrated sensitivity to clindamycin and 95% of strains were susceptible to tetracycline, erythromycin, and rifampicin. Ampicillin and chloramphenicol were found to inhibit all bacteria used in this study. The vast majority of tested strains revealed phenotypic resistance to vancomycin, ciprofloxacin, and aminoglycosides. Most of Lactobacil…

[Antibiotic resistance of Lactobacillus strains].

One hundred and thirty six Lactobacillus strains isolated from poultry and 23 Lactobacillus strains isolated from long-living persons were tested for their antibiotic sensitivity. Occurrence of some type determinants of resistance to aminoglycoside antibiotics and tetracyclines in the Lactobacillus strains resistant to these antibiotics was studied. The majority of the strains from the both collections were resistant to aminoglycosides (73 and 79 per cent, respectively). The isolates from the poultry were characterized by multiple resistance. The isolates from the long-living persons were most…

Strain-level variation among vaginal Lactobacillus crispatus and Lactobacillus iners as identified by comparative metagenomics.

The vaginal microbiome, a relatively simple, low diversity ecosystem crucial for female health, is often dominated by Lactobacillus spp. Detailed strain-level data, facilitated by shotgun sequencing, can provide a greater understanding of the mechanisms of colonization and host-microbe interactions. We analysed 354 vaginal metagenomes from pregnant women in Ireland to investigate metagenomic community state types and strain-level variation, focusing on cell surface interfaces. Our analysis revealed multiple subspecies, with Lactobacillus crispatus and Lactobacillus iners being the most dominan…

Lactobacillus apisdorsatae sp. nov. from the giant honeybee (Apis dorsata), Lactobacillus pollinatoris sp. nov. and Lactobacillus xylocopae sp. nov., from the carpenter bee (Xylocopa violacea).

Insects host diverse and distinctive communities of gut mutualistic bacteria, including lactic acid bacteria of the Lactobacillus genus. Recently, most research in the insect microbial taxonomy has focused on identifying novel Lactobacillaceae species in managed insects such as Apis mellifera and few species of Bombus spp. from North America, Europe, and China. However, the gut microbiota of wild insects remains largely unexplored. Yet, insects represent the largest animal class and a vast, untouched source of novel microbial symbionts, especially in wild populations. This study focuses on the…

Overgrowth of Lactobacillus in gastric cancer.

Dysbiosis of the gastric microbiome is involved in the development of gastric cancer (GC). A number of studies have demonstrated an increase in the relative abundance of Lactobacillus in GC. In this review, we present data that support the overgrowth of Lactobacillus in GC from studies on molecular and bacterial culture of the gastric microbiome, discuss the heterogenic effects of Lactobacillus on the health of human stomach, and explore the potential roles of the overgrowth of Lactobacillus in gastric carcinogenesis. Further studies are required to examine the association between Lactobacillu…

Lactobacillus acidophilus sepsis in a neonate.

Lactobacillus species are non-spore-forming, anaerobic, gram-positive rods that cause disease in immunocompromised adults. Few cases have been described in children. We present the case of a 2-month-old infant who apparently developed Lactobacillus acidophilus sepsis from an infected central venous catheter. Physicians should be aware that although Lactobacillus species rarely cause disease in children, they should be considered a possible pathogen when isolated from the blood of a newborn infant.
