Between 1983 and 1988, we treated 66 patients with pelvic abscesses. Twenty-five patients required laparotomy and 41 underwent pelviscopy for treatment. The choice of the operative procedure, laparotomy or pelviscopy, depended on the age of the patient, the clinical presentation and the operative findings. The two collectives demonstrated no differences in the duration of hospitalization and in-patient treatment with antibiotics. Infra-umbilical abdominal section concomitant with peritoneal lavage was applied to 74 patients with pelvic fracture and has proved to be helpful in early diagnosis of intra-abdominal organ injuries. However, the percentage of falsely positive results was found to be as high as 17.3 per cent, in the context of pelvic fractures. This has been attributable to the fact that the pelvic floor is likely to be elevated by the haematoma caused by a pelvic fracture, and the syringe may thus get accidentally into the haematoma.

Staging laparotomy (multiple liver and lymph node biopsies and splenectomy) was performed at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in 123 patients with Hodgkin's disease. There were no deaths. Wound, pulmonary, intra-abdominal or urinary tract complications developed in 17 patients. Mini-laparotomy 3-4 cm long at projection of hepatoduodenal ligament with the help of surgical set of the firm "SAN" (Ekaterinburg) makes it possible to carry out successfully cholecystectomy and manipulations on the choledochus with minimal operation trauma. 104 patients were operated on for acute chronic cholecystitis with the help of this method. Mini-laparotomy in cholecystectomy enables intraoperation cholangiography and manipulations on the choledochus in any conditions.

Retrospective study of a series of 397 consecutive cholecystectomies among which 289 by laparotomy, 100 by coelioscopy and 8 by coelioscopy first and laparotomy in a second time (conversion rate 8/108 = 7.4%).
