Leptospirosis is prevalent in Thailand but its diagnosis depends primarily on clinical awareness. Serodiagnosis is of great assistance in the diagnosis of leptospirosis but in Thailand microagglutination (MA) is the only serodiagnosis available. MA is not rapid and it is used mainly in the referent laboratory. In addition, its roles in early diagnosis are rarely available. There are few quantitative guidelines for the interpretation of serologic tests for histoplasmosis. Furthermore, guidelines that have been proposed are not accepted generally. Here we present two cases of latex hypersensitivity. The clinical manifestations were conjunctivitis, urticaria, angioedema and dermatitis. The patients presented positive skin prick test (SPT) to latex with a commercial extract and by pricking through a latex surgical glove. Radioallergosorbent test (RAST) to latex and patch testing to common additives and to latex were negative. Skin prick tests with fruits (banana, kiwi, pineapple, apricot, avocado, grape) were positive but children presented no symptoms after ingestion of these fruits. Tests for serum antibodies against two amoeba antigens were performed on serum samples from 70 patients with amoebic liver abscesses, 204 travellers returning from tropical countries and 136 inhabitants of an endemic region without evidence of amoebiasis. Results are reported of antibodies to E. histolytica antigen obtained by enzyme immunoassay, complement fixation, indirect hemagglutination and latex agglutination in sera of persons with varying exposure to infection by E. histolytica. The data are compared to findings in non-exposed persons and in patients with amebic liver abscess. From the results it is concluded that the value of serodiagnosis in amebiasis is higher in patients, who have traveled in tropical areas for a limited period, than in residents of the tropics.
