Cosensitization to the 3 Nonhomologous Major Cashew Allergens Ana o 1, Ana o 2, and Ana o 3 Is Caused by IgE Cross-reactivity.

BACKGROUND: Cashew nuts often cause strong allergic reactions, which are even more severe than those of peanuts. Ana o 1 (vicilin), Ana o 2 (legumin), and Ana o 3 (2S albumin) are major cashew allergens. Cosensitization to all 3 nonhomologous cashew nut allergens has been observed. We hypothesize that this might be due to IgE cross-reactivity. METHODS: IgE cross-inhibitions were performed with Ana o 1-3 using serum samples from cashew nut-allergic patients. The related hazelnut allergens Cor a 11, 9, and 14 were used as controls. For comparison, IgE cross-reactivity between the hazelnut aller

Plant Nitrogen Assimilation: A Climate Change Perspective.

Of all the essential macronutrients necessary for plant growth and development, nitrogen is required in the greatest amounts. Nitrogen is a key component of important biomolecules like proteins and has high nutritive importance for humans and other animals. Climate change factors, such as increasing levels of carbon dioxide, increasing temperatures, and increasing watering regime, directly or indirectly influence plant nitrogen uptake and assimilation dynamics. The impacts of these stressors can directly threaten our primary source of nitrogen as obtained from the soil by plants. In this revie

Poppy Seed Allergy: Molecular Diagnosis and Cross-Reactivity With Tree Nuts.

BACKGROUND: Poppy seed (PS) can be a cause of severe allergic reactions, especially in individuals with concurrent allergy to tree nuts and other seeds, but diagnostic criteria and sensitization patterns are lacking. OBJECTIVE: To assess the role of PS extract and individual allergens in diagnosing PS allergy and their cross-reactivities with tree nuts and buckwheat. METHODS: Our retrospective study included 36 PS-sensitized patients; 10 with a positive and 26 with a negative oral food challenge (OFC). We identified individual PS allergens and compared the diagnostic performance of specific

Characterization of the soluble allergenic proteins of cashew nut (Anacardium occidentale L.).

The allergens associated with cashew food allergy have not been well-characterized. We sought to identify the major allergens in cashew nut by performing IgE immunoblots to dissociated and reduced or nonreduced cashew protein extracts, followed by sequencing of the peptides of interest. Sera from 15 subjects with life-threatening reactions to cashews and 8 subjects who tolerate cashews but have life-threatening reactions to other tree nuts were compared. An aqueous cashew protein extract containing albumin/globulin was separated by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS

Role of Non-Thermal Processing Technologies in Modulating Protein Allergenicity in Legumes.

The global shift toward plant-based diets has increased legume consumption due to health and environmental benefits. However, storage proteins in legumes, such as albumins, vicilins, and legumins, can cause immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated allergic reactions ranging from mild symptoms to severe anaphylaxis. The objective of this review is to evaluate the role of non-thermal processing technologies (NTTs) in reducing legume allergenicity. Current evidence indicates that NTTs such as pulsed electric fields, high-pressure processing, ultrasound, cold plasma, irradiation, and enzymatic hydrolysis c…

Application and opportunities of pulses in food system: a review.

Pulses are highly nutritious seeds of pod-bearing leguminous plants, specifically dry peas, lentils, and chickpeas. US farmers harvest about 2.6 million pounds of pulses every year but 75% of this is being exported internationally because of its increased consumption in the developing countries. In the current scenario, increasing costs of production, bad economy, and fluctuating food commodity prices have made a strong case for US producers to seek opportunities to increase domestic consumption of pulses through value-added products. Pulses are the richest sources of plant proteins and provid

Periostitis and osteitis associated with hyaline bodies.

Twenty four cases of periostitis and osteitis associated with hyaline bodies are reviewed. The condition primarily affects the premolar and molar region of the mandible in patients who wear dentures. It is suggested that exogenous foreign material, especially from leguminous food impacted into the tissues following tooth extraction, is involved in the pathogenesis of the lesions. In dentate patients there are several other routes by which such material could gain access to the deeper tissues.

MsMTA regulates growth and metabolism in alfalfa (Medicago sativa) through m6A-mediated stabilization of metabolic transcripts.

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is a widespread RNA modification in eukaryotes, yet its contribution to growth and metabolic regulation in perennial leguminous forage crops remains poorly understood. Here, we identify MsMTA, a nuclear-localized m6A methyltransferase in alfalfa (Medicago sativa), as a key regulator of the global m6A landscape, plant architecture, and forage nutritional composition. Suppression of MsMTA expression reduced overall m6A levels and caused a pronounced dwarf phenotype. At the metabolic level, MsMTA knockdown lines showed a strong increase in soluble sugar content, accompani

Potential Toxic Levels of Cyanide in Almonds (Prunus amygdalus), Apricot Kernels (Prunus armeniaca), and Almond Syrup.

Under normal environmental conditions, many plants synthesize cyanogenic glycosides, which are able to release hydrogen cyanide upon hydrolysis. Each year, there are frequent livestock and occasional human victims of cyanogenic plants consumption. The present work aims to determine the hydrocyanic acid content in different samples of cyanogenic plants, selected from the Tunisian flora, and in the almond syrup. In order to evaluate their toxicity and their impact on the consumer health in the short term as well as in the long term, using the ISO 2164-1975 NT standard, relating to the determinat

GC-MS analysis and antifungal potential of flower extract of Acacia nilotica subsp. Indica against Macrophomina phaseolina.

Macrophomina phaseolina is a wide host ranged soil-borne fungal plant pathogen. It infects more than 500 host plant species belonging to 100 families. Many important oil-seed and leguminous crops are known to be attacked by this devastating plant pathogen. In the present study, antifungal potential of flowers of a leguminous tree Acacia nilotica subsp. indica, was assessed against this pathogen through bioassays guided fractionation. Initially, methanolic extracts of 1 %-5 % of leaf, flower, root-bark and stem-bark of the plant species under consideration were evaluated for their antifungal po

Localized expression of arbuscular mycorrhiza-inducible ammonium transporters in soybean.

The majority of land plants acquire soil nutrients, such as phosphorus and nitrogen, not only through the root surface but also through arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. Soybean is the most important leguminous crop in the world. We found 16 ammonium transporter genes in the soybean genome, five of which are AM inducible. Among them, promoter-reporter analysis indicated that the most abundantly transcribed gene, GmAMT4.1, showed specific expression in arbusculated cortical cells. Moreover, the GmAMT4.1-green fluorescent protein fusion was localized on the branch domain of periarbuscular membr

Heat-Induced Gelation of Legume Protein-Starch Systems: Mechanisms, Structure-Function Relationships and Food Application.

Plant-based food systems increasingly rely on heat-induced gelation of protein-starch mixtures, yet no focused synthesis has linked legume protein composition to mixed gel structure and function. This review critically analyses heat-induced gelation mechanisms in legume protein-starch systems, using the legumin-to-vicilin (L:V) ratio and starch origin as integrating design parameters. Legume storage proteins range from legumin-rich faba bean and Lupinus angustifolius, which form dense, disulfide-stabilised networks with high storage moduli, to vicilin-dominated mung bean, which produces weaker

Progress on 3-Nitropropionic Acid Derivatives.

3-Nitropropionic acid (3-NPA) is a deadly neurotoxic nitroalkane found in numerous fungi and leguminous plants. 3-NPA, known as an antimetabolite of succinate, irreversibly inhibits succinate dehydrogenase and disrupts mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. Its utility in modeling Huntington's disease (HD) and oxidative stress has garnered significant research interest. Derivatives of 3-NPA, formed through esterification, have a wide range of biological activities including neurotoxic, antiviral, insecticidal, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. This review systematically summarizes th

Coordination of symbiosis and cell cycle functions in Sinorhizobium meliloti.

The symbiotic nitrogen fixing species Sinorhizobium meliloti represents a remarkable model system for the class Alphaproteobacteria, which includes genera such as Caulobacter, Agrobacterium and Brucella. It is capable of living free in the soil, and is also able to establish a complex symbiosis with leguminous plants, during which its cell cycle program is completely rewired presumably due, at least in part, to the action of peptides secreted by the plant. Here we will discuss how the cell cycle regulation works in S. meliloti and the kinds of molecular mechanisms that take place during the in
