Leishmaniasis is a clinically heterogeneous group of diseases, caused by infection with protozoa of the genus Leishmania. The aggressiveness of the individual species, their organ preference and the host immune status determine disease course. This can range from a solitary, spontaneous healing ulcer (cutaneous leishmaniasis), to often destructive mucocutaneous disease to generalized involvement with visceral leishmaniasis which may be lethal if not treated. The protozoa are transmitted by small (2-4 mm) phlebotomine sand flies. Protection with non-impregnated mosquito nets is almost impossibl…

Leishmania parasites are obligate intracellular protozoa, that produce clinical pictures, ranging from localised, self-healing ulcers to systemic, lethal diseases. The diseases caused by the parasites can be divided into cutaneous, mucocutaneous, and visceral leishmaniasis. Recovery from the infection often leaves lifelong immunity. Leishmaniasis may occur in individuals who have been to the Mediterranean countries, the countries on the Horn of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, parts of Asia, and South and Central America. Co-infection of Leishmania parasites and HIV is a special problem. Leishma…

In 1903, Leishman and Donovan separately described the protozoan now called Leishmania donovani in splenic tissue from patients in India with the life-threatening disease now called visceral leishmaniasis. Almost a century later, many features of leishmaniasis and its major syndromes (ie, visceral, cutaneous, and mucosal) have remained the same; but also much has changed. As before, epidemics of this sandfly-borne disease occur periodically in India and elsewhere; but leishmaniasis has also emerged in new regions and settings, for example, as an AIDS-associated opportunistic infection. Diagnos…

The leishmaniases are parasitic diseases that are transmitted to humans by infected female sandflies. Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is one of 3 main forms of the disease. CL is the most common form of the disease and is endemic in many urban and rural parts of Iran and usually caused by two species of Leishmania: L. major and L. tropica. We report a case of unusual leishmaniasis with 25 lesions on exposed parts of the body and right eyelid involvement (ocular leishmaniasis). The patient was a 75-year-old male farmer referred to health care center in Aran va Bidgol city. The disease was diagnose…

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis recidiva cutis (LRC) consists of active lesions around or inside the scar of classical cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). In the literature it is considered as an hyperergic form of CL because the patients show a strong response to intradermal testing with leishmania antigen and, histologically, the parasites are scarce or absent; a well-organized granuloma is always observed.
METHODS: Three patients from Bahia (Brazil) with LRC were evaluated by clinical examination, biopsies, skin tests with leishmania antigen, serology, and culture. In addition, a specific lymphocyte b…

A 15-year-old female patient presented with numerous, small, papulonodular skin lesions, and hepatosplenomegaly 9 months after a treated biopsy proved cutaneous leishmaniasis. In ocular examination there were two yellowish, raised gelatinous conjunctival lesions in the left eye. The exisional conjunctival lesion biopsy revealed many Leishman bodies inside tissue histiocytes. The patient had no systemic immunologic problems (normal serum immunoglobulins, nitroblue-tetrazolium test, complement CH50 test and flow cytometry of leukocytes). The indirect immunofluorescent antibody test for Leishmani…

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) may appear at unusual sites or present with atypical morphologies. The lip is considered one of the unusual sites and a fissure of the lower lip is an atypical morphology that has not been described in CL. We report two cases of CL who presented as cutaneous fissures (on lower lip in one patient and dorsum of finger in another). They were diagnosed by demonstrating leishmania parasites in skin smear preparations and were treated accordingly.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to draw clinical and epidemiological comparisons between visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and VL associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
METHOD: Retrospective study.
RESULTS: Of 473 cases of VL, 5.5% were coinfected with HIV. The highest proportion of cases of both VL and VL/HIV were found among men. A higher proportion of VL cases was seen in children aged 0-10 years, whereas coinfection was more common in those aged 18-50 years.
CONCLUSIONS: VL/HIV coinfected patients presented slightly differently to and had a higher mortality rate than tho…

Post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) is increasingly recognized in Sudan as a complication of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), occurring in c. 55% of patients after, or during treatment of, VL. The development of PKDL seems to be restricted to parasites of the Leishmania donovani sensu stricto cluster; no particular zymodeme has been found to be associated with it. In contrast to PKDL in India, PKDL in Sudan occurs within 0-6 months after treatment for VL. The rash may be macular, maculo-papular or nodular, and spreads from the perioral area to other parts of the body, depending on grade of …

Leishmaniasis is a parasitic infection that can involve the skin, mucosal membranes, and internal organs. Soldiers are at highrisk of leishmaniasis when conducting operations in endemic regions. Medical providers should have a low threshold to consider Leishmaniasis as the cause of persisting skin lesions.
