Genomics, transcriptomics, and peptidomics of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) neuropeptides.

Neuropeptides control many physiological and behavioral processes, and so they are functionally important classes of cell-to-cell signaling molecules. Nowadays, the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is one of the most destructive agricultural pests in the world. In this study, we mined the publicly accessible genome assembly data for S. frugiperda, and the transcriptomic and proteomic data of the larval central nervous system (CNS) for putative neuropeptide-encoding, and subsequently we used these to anticipate a peptidome for this species. In essence, we could identify 57 orthologs of ins

Resistance of citrus genotypes to Phyllocnitis citrella Stainton (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae).

The development and reproduction of the citrus leafminer (CLM), Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton, were evaluated in six citrus genotypes in order to identify genotypes with resistance traits that could be applied in a program for the development of citrus varieties resistant to the citrus leafminer. Tests were conducted under controlled laboratory conditions (25 ± 1ºC, 70 ± 10% RH, and 14h photophase). Seedlings of each genotype tested were infested with eggs obtained from a stock colony of CLM maintained on 'Cravo' lemon (Citrus limonia L. Osbeck), and the duration and survival of the eggs, la

Proteome Analysis of Urticating Setae From Thaumetopoea pityocampa (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae).

Thaumetopoea pityocampa (Denis & Schiffermüller) (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae) is harmful to conifer trees because of defoliation and to public health because of the release of urticating setae from the caterpillars. Contact with setae by humans and domestic animals induces dermatitis, usually localized to the exposed areas. Recent studies demonstrated the presence of a complex urticating mechanism where proteins present in the setae may play a role as activators of immune responses. Yet, limited information is available at present about the proteins occurring in the setae of T. pityocampa. Usin

Role of maize kernels on the fitness of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

Recent outbreak of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (JE Smith), has caused considerable challenges to maize production, Zea mays L., in the world. Sustainable pest management through host plant resistance requires further confirmation of maize hybrids that reduce pest pressure during postflowering stage. In this study, the comparative resistance of kernels from 10 maize hybrids, including BC678, SC201, SC704, SC410, SC706, SC400, SC260, BK66, SC705, and BK65, was evaluated using the nutritional indices, demographic parameters, and enzymatic activities of Spodoptera frugiperda in relati

Ultrastructure of the Eggs, Larvae, and Pupae of Hyphantria cunea (Lepidoptera: Erebidae).

Hyphantria cunea is a widespread pest that causes significant issues in forestry and agriculture, with a far-reaching global impact. However, ultramorphological studies of H. cunea, especially in terms of ultramorphological changes, are far from in-depth. Therefore, we investigated the ultrastructure of its eggs, larvae, and pupae using scanning electron microscopy, focusing on ultrastructural changes in larvae across different instars. The eggs have rough surfaces, and the micropylar region consists of rosette cells. The larval head chaetotaxy is symmetrically arranged, and there are three ty

Toward standards in practices and techniques on ootaxonomy in the Pieridae (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea).

We present a proposal on the standards used on ootaxonomy practices and techniques in the butterfly family Pieridae Duponchel (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) in five stages: 1) getting the specimens, 2) integration into a collection, 3) dissections to recover the exochorion, 4) elaboration of images of it, and 5) the preparation of its description with the necessary diagrams and tabulations. Also, we present the detailed techniques applied in observation and graphic representation, based on the methylene blue staining techniques and those required for the use with the scanning electron microscope

Caterpillars and moths: Part I. Dermatologic manifestations of encounters with Lepidoptera.

Caterpillars are the larval forms of moths and butterflies and belong to the order Lepidoptera. Caterpillars, and occasionally moths, have evolved defense mechanisms, including irritating hairs, spines, venoms, and toxins that may cause human disease. The pathologic mechanisms underlying reactions to Lepidoptera are poorly understood. Lepidoptera are uncommonly recognized causes of localized stings, eczematous or papular dermatitis, and urticaria. Part I of this two-part series on caterpillars and moths reviews Lepidopteran life cycles, terminology, and the epidemiology of caterpillar and moth

Efficacy of the novel insecticide, isocycloseram, against codling moths (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae).

Codling moths, Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), can cause severe damage in apples (Malus domestica Borkh) (Rosales: Rosaceae) and are targets of the majority of insecticide applications. A novel insecticide, isocycloseram, presents a new mode of action with the potential to be incorporated into integrated pest management programs for codling moths. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of isocycloseram on codling moths in apples using both laboratory and field trials. In the laboratory trials, a direct toxicity test was conducted to compare the effectiveness of

Morphological comparison of tympanal organs between Phycitinae and Pyralinae (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae).

Tympanal organ plays an important role for insects in perception, fleeing from predators, defense, finding and choosing sex, communication, and carrying out social interactions. It is positioned in different areas among various insect groups. Tympanal organ is in the abdomen in the Pyralidae family, many species of which are harmful to economically important agricultural products and storage products. This study was conducted to determine the importance of the tympanal organ in the classification of Pyralids. For this purpose, tympanal organs of 10 species (Pyralis farinalis (Linnaeus, 1758),

A new species of Dichagyris Lederer, 1857 from China (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae).

Dichagyris is a diverse genus with a Holarctic distribution. Only a few taxa of the subgenus Albocosta Fibiger Lafontaine, 1997 occur in the northwesternmost part of the Oriental region. The genus is most diverse in Turkey, Iran and the Central Asiatic high mountains. However, there is a distinct Sino-Tibetan group of species, possibly representing an undescribed subgenus. However, this idea is provisional and awaits revision of the genus. For present purposes, we assign these species to the subgenus Dichagyris. They share the following putative synapomorphies: black, dark brown or dark greyis

Antennal transcriptome analysis of the piercing moth Oraesia emarginata (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

The piercing fruit moth Oraesia emarginata is an economically significant pest; however, our understanding of its olfactory mechanisms in infestation is limited. The present study conducted antennal transcriptome analysis of olfactory genes using real-time quantitative reverse transcription PCR analysis (RT-qPCR). We identified a total of 104 candidate chemosensory genes from several gene families, including 35 olfactory receptors (ORs), 41 odorant-binding proteins, 20 chemosensory proteins, 6 ionotropic receptors, and 2 sensory neuron membrane proteins. Seven candidate pheromone receptors (PR

A new Polia Ochsenheimer, 1816 species from China (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae, Hadenini).

The genus Polia Ochsenheimer, 1816 includes 26 species in the Palaearctic region, with the familiar European species being properly classified (Hacker et al., 2002), while most species from the more diverse Himalayan-region still require a comprehensive revision. Most recently, a new Polia species from China was described by Saldaitis et al. (2013). The sino-tibetian species Polia costirufa (Draudt, 1950) is one of the most interesting members of the complex as it is separable from its relatives at least on the subgeneric level. Certain elements of its forewing pattern resemble those of the ge

Toxic Effects of Couroupita guianensis Against Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

Laboratory experiments were conducted to find out the efficacy of different crude extracts and fractions of Couroupita guianensis (Lecythidaceae) against Spodoptera litura (Fabricius). Results revealed that hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts of C. guianensis showed larvicidal and pupicidal activities against S. litura. Maximum larvicidal activity (68.66%) was observed in hexane extract at 5.0% concentration followed by chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts, and least LC50 value of 2.64% was observed in hexane extract. A 100% pupicidal activity was observed in hexane extract. Based o

Temperature thresholds and degree-day model for Marmara gulosa (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae).

The developmental thresholds for Marmara gulosa Guillén & Davis (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) were investigated in the laboratory by using 17, 21, 25, 29, and 33 degrees C. The lowest mortality occurred in cohorts exposed to 25 and 29 degrees C. Other temperatures caused >10% mortality primarily in egg and first and second instar sap-feeding larvae. Linear regression analysis approximated the lower developmental threshold at 12.2 degrees C. High mortality and slow developmental rate at 33 degrees C indicate the upper developmental threshold is near this temperature. The degree-day (DD) model i

Protocol for dissecting and excising the brain of the Manduca sexta (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) moth.

The Carolina Sphinx moth, Manduca sexta (L.) is widely used in neurobiological research, particularly those investigating the olfactory system. Due in part to similarities in brain structure and neural processing with mammals, M. sexta is regarded as a valuable model organism in neuroscience. However, despite its increasing relevance in research, detailed protocols for brain dissection in this species remain limited. This protocol provides step-by-step guidance for opening the head capsule of M. sexta and excising the brain. It visually guides the reader using annotated diagrams highlighting k

Functional investigation of CYP304F1 in Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) by RNA interference.

Tuta absoluta has developed resistance to many biological insecticides, causing substantial agricultural and economic losses annually. P450s have been the most extensively studied enzymes in the context of insecticide metabolism in insect pests, and the detoxification metabolism of P450s in T. absoluta against biological insecticides remains poorly understood. In T. absoluta, CYP304F1 was screened from the comparative transcriptome of 2 regional populations in Xinjiang, China. The objective of the present study was to characterize and analyze CYP304F1 of T. absoluta and explore its role in det

The motor apparatus of head movements in the Oleander hawkmoth (Daphnis nerii, Lepidoptera).

Head movements of insects play a vital role in diverse locomotory behaviors including flying and walking. Because insect eyes move minimally within their sockets, their head movements are essential to reduce visual blur and maintain a stable gaze. As in most vertebrates, gaze stabilization behavior in insects requires the integration of both visual and mechanosensory feedback by the neck motor neurons. Although visual feedback is derived from the optic flow over the retina of their compound eyes, mechanosensory feedback is derived from their organs of balance, similar to the vestibular system
