Idiopathic leukoplakia lingualis.

A 67-year-old man had a nonspecific leukoplakia of the tongue. It was of recent onset and had no readily apparent etiology. From the differential diagnosis of seven conditions, biopsy was consistent with a benign hyperkeratotic process. Although several atypical cells were noted in the epithelium, no foci of dysplasia or frank squamous cell carcinoma were observed. The characteristic histologic features of lichen planus, hairy leukoplakia, and hyperplastic candidiasis were similarly not present in the biopsy specimen. No evidence of coexisting systemic disturbances or risk factors associated w…

Oral hairy leukoplakia.

Oral hairy leukoplakia, usually observed on the lateral border of the tongue, may herald the development of symptomatic human immunodeficiency virus infection. This paper reviews the pertinent clinical features and differential diagnosis, histology, methods of establishing a definitive diagnosis, and management of the patient with this Epstein-Barr virus-associated lesion.

Oral hairy leukoplakia.

Oral hairy leukoplakia occurs almost exclusively in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients and is predictive for the development of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It presents as a white plaque with a rough surface, most commonly on the sides of the tongue. The eruption is frequently overlooked, and, because it is commonly mistaken for oral candidiasis, its true incidence is unknown. The leukoplakia is the result of permissive infection of epithelial cells by the Epstein-Barr virus. Antiviral therapy that inhibits Epstein-Barr virus replication can result in clinical i…

Oral hairy leukoplakia.

Oral hairy leukoplakia was first described in homosexual men infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. It is thought to be caused by infection with both the Epstein-Barr virus and human papillomavirus. We report 59 cases of oral hairy leukoplakia. The disease was diagnosed in patients in all risk groups and was categorized in all classes of the Walter Reed classification without significant differences in prevalence. Epstein-Barr virus could be demonstrated in all tissue samples examined; human papillomavirus was found in only a few specimens. In our series oral hairy leukoplakia had a c…

[Oral hairy leukoplakia].

We report our experience of oral hairy leukoplakia in HIV seropositive patients. Etiopathogenesis and relationship between oral hairy leukoplakia and HIV infection are briefly discussed, as well as its prognostic value.

[Oral hairy leukoplakia].

At present HL: should be considered a marker of immunodeficiency, though not necessarily associated with HIV infection. In eight patients with HL it was confirmed that this lesion, in male homosexuals, in a precursor and marker of AIDS. The diagnosis of HL warrant all efforts to protect the immune system and avoid progression to AIDS.

Acquired dyskeratotic leukoplakia.

A 36-year-old woman developed progressive dyskeratotic leukoplakia of the palate, lips, attached gingiva, and labial surfaces of the genitalia. On microscopic examination, clusters of dyskeratotic cells were found throughout the epithelium, except in the basal cell layer. The clinical and histologic differential diagnosis included candidiasis, oral hairy leukoplakia, lichen planus, condyloma acuminatum, Darier's disease, hereditary benign intraepithelial dyskeratosis, and white sponge nevus. Her clinical and histologic findings do not permit classification into any of these well-recognized ent…

Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia: recognition and differentiation from conventional leukoplakia and mimics.

The majority of conventional leukoplakia remains constant and only a subset progress to high-grade dysplasia or invasive carcinoma. A less recognized form known as proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) represents a unique progressive and elusive variant. Identifying patients with this form can only be achieved through the keen clinical observation of the temporal gross and histologic progression in individual patients with squamous cell carcinoma. The difficulty in the early diagnosis of PVL stems from the overlapping clinical and pathologic features with conventional multifocal leukoplaki…

Leukoplakia of the labial commissure.

A white lesion located in the labial commissure can pose problems for both the clinician and the pathologist. The clinician may be limited i … is rather rare, alertness remains necessary as one patient with the clinical appearance typical of leukoplakia, showed on biopsy the presence of a squamous cell carcinoma at this first visit. In another two patients the areas of leukoplakic change were shown histologically to be based on verrucous carcinoma. In one patient a squamous cell carcinoma developed …
