Nonparaneoplastic limbic encephalitis with relapsing polychondritis.

Relapsing polychondritis (RP), which shows pain, swelling and destruction of the affected parts, is a rare autoimmune disorder affecting cartilage. We report a patient with RP that affected skull cartilage, who subsequently developed multifocal meningoencephalitis. The patient presented with severe recent memory disturbance, anxiety and moderate depression. MRI study showed bilateral median temporal lobe lesions including hippocampi and amygdaloidal bodies, abnormal findings that disappeared after treatment with high-dose steroids. This is thought to be the first case of RP presenting amnesic

Limbic encephalitis secondary to malignant thymoma.

A 56-year-old woman presented with memory loss and an enlarging mediastinal mass on chest roentgenogram. Physical findings were normal except for an altered mental status examination consistent with dementia. Further radiologic assessment was nondiagnostic. Surgical resection of a malignant thymoma resulted in clinical improvement. Treatment for limbic encephalitis should be directed at the underlying disease, and symptoms may improve if the tumor is eradicated.

[Clinical course of paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis].

A 49-year-old woman presented with increasing memory loss without dementia. The EEG showed slow activity over the temporal lobe. MRT revealed temporal areas of increased signal intensity without gadolinium enhancement. The diagnosis of limbic encephalitis was made after detection of a bronchial carcinoma. A MRT control examination after chemotherapy showed resolution of the abnormalities. This observation may indicate that chemotherapy has modified that part of the immunological system responsible for induction of limbic encephalitis.

MR imaging of paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis.

Paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis is a rare disorder that has been previously diagnosed on clinical and pathologic grounds without good radiologic correlation. We present the case of a 42-year-old woman who developed gradually progressive limbic dysfunction 4 years after undergoing mastectomy for breast cancer. Although CT scans were normal, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging showed signal abnormalities in the medial portions of both temporal lobes, the amygdaloid nuclei, and the hypothalamus. An MR-guided temporal lobe biopsy confirmed the presence of encephalitis.

Paraneoplastic Limbic Encephalitis in a Patient With Thymoma.

Paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis is a rare neurological disorder that is classically associated with small cell lung cancer, it usually presents with seizures, confusion, behavioral changes and cognitive impairments. It has been associated with a number of onconeural antibodies. Its association with other malignancies is less recognized. We present a case of a young male with a diagnosis of thymoma who developed limbic encephalitis after the diagnosis and the initial treatment of his malignancy. The patient showed clinical improvement after receiving radiotherapy to the primary tumor.

Limbic encephalitis: Experience of a moroccan center.

OBJECTIVES: Histologically defined as an inflammation-degeneration of limbic structures, limbic encephalitis (LE) is a rare disease and often difficult to diagnose particularly in institutions with limited access to laboratory tests such as antineuronal antibodies or HSV-PCR, and functional imaging. We aimed to describe the demographic, clinical, paraclinical, and etiological features of LE, as well as its medium-term prognosis in Moroccan patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We collected retrospectively all patients diagnosed with LE in the Department of Neurology of the University Hospital Hass

EEG leading to the diagnosis of limbic encephalitis.

Limbic encephalitis is characterized by subacute onset of short-term memory loss, seizures, sleep disturbances, as well as psychiatric and behavioral symptoms. A subgroup is associated with voltage-gated potassium channel antibodies (VGKC-Abs). In many cases, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrates hyperintense areas in the medial part of the temporal lobe. Also, pleiocytosis is frequently found. In this study, we describe a 69-year-old man with VGKC-Abs limbic encephalitis with generalized tonic-clonic seizures, increasing memory deficits, visual hallucinations, depression, and se

[A case of neurosyphilis presenting with limbic encephalitis].

A 46-year-old man presented with a history of personality change and memory disturbance for 5 months. He gradually became difficult in doing a daily job. Brain MRI showed abnormal hyperintensity within bilateral mesial temporal lobes on T2 weighted image. Therefore, viral and autoimmune limbic encephalitis was initially suspected. However, because treponemal and non-treponemal specific antibodies were positive in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the diagnosis of neurosyphilis was made. Patients of neurosyphilis with mesiotemporal T2 weighted hyperintensity reportedly showed common features

Limbic encephalitis in a child: an atypical presentation.

BACKGROUND: Limbic encephalitis is a rare disorder with a generally subacute onset evolving over days to weeks. Patients present with a variable combination of memory loss, seizures, and psychiatric disturbance, and it is not rare for patients to be initially misdiagnosed. PATIENT: We describe a previously healthy 12-year-old boy who developed his first seizures at 8 years of age. He had a total of eight prolonged focal seizures, each followed by a month of behavioral changes and short-term memory loss. There was no family history of seizures or other neurological disorders, and he had an oth

[Recent changes in the paradigm of limbic encephalitis].

In the recent years, novel antibodies associated with limbic encephalitis have been described, which target such extracellular receptors or proteins that have been already indicated in the pathogenesis of hereditary or degenerative diseases. In a number of cases, where pathogenic role of antibodies generated against the voltage-gated potassium channel (VGKC) had been presumed, antibodies against a trans-synaptic scaffolding protein, LGI1 were indicated. Antibody response against NMDA-receptors has been suggested as a major cause of limbic encephalitis especially in young females, resulting in

[Anti-VGKC Complex Antibodies and Limbic Encephalitis].

Anti-voltage-gated potassium channel (VGKC) antibodies are now understood to be antibodies against associated proteins leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 (LGI1) and contactin-associated protein-like 2 (CASPR2) and are detected using a cell-based assay. Anti-LGI1 or anti-CASPR2 antibody-positive patients present characteristics of limbic encephalitis, which is usually seen in middle-aged men and women who present with mainly amnesia and seizures. Faciobrachial dystonic seizures are seen specifically in LGI1 antibody-positive patients, and neuromyotonia is predominantly seen in CASPR2 antibody-po

Limbic encephalitis associated with tuberculous mediastinal lymphadenitis.

INTRODUCTION: Limbic encephalitis represents an autoimmune disorder that is commonly associated with malignancies. It is also seen in association with infectious or systemic autoimmune diseases. The literature reports two case reports of limbic encephalitis associated with tuberculosis. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 42 year-old male referred to our clinic for a non-resolving pneumonia. He was found to have a limbic encephalitis associated with mediastinal tuberculous lymphadenitis. The diagnosis was made on a needle aspirate from a mediastinal lymph node obtained through endobronchial

Paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis associated with lung cancer.

Paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis (PLE) is a rare autoimmune neurological syndrome observed in lung cancer patients. We retrospectively investigated the clinical characteristics, treatment responses, and prognoses in 16 PLE patients who were subsequently diagnosed with lung cancer. Fifteen patients initially presented with disturbance of consciousness, 13 with disorientation, and 12 with seizures. Thirteen patients had autoantibodies, including eight with gamma aminobutyric acid B receptor (GABABR) antibodies and eight with Hu antibodies. PET-CT revealed lung neoplasms in 13 patients, nine of

Atypical development of neurosyphilis mimicking limbic encephalitis.

A previously healthy 35-year-old man suffering from behavioral and mental deterioration for three months was referred to our facility. On admission, the patient was dysphasic and had tonic-clonic seizures. Neurological examination showed mental confusion, euphoric mood, mania, paranoia, and mild motor dysphasia. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed twice but no abnormalities were revealed. His acute confusional state, elevated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) protein, epileptic seizure and electroencephalogram showing intermittent frontal slowness were all suggestive of encephalitis. The pa

Seronegative Paraneoplastic Limbic Encephalitis Associated with Thymoma.

Paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis is an autoimmune syndrome characterized by the acute or subacute onset of encephalopathy, memory loss, confusion, temporal lobe seizures, and behavioral and mood changes. Although most patients with paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis have antineuronal antibodies, advances in the field now permit the diagnosis without autoantibody test results. In this case illustrating the new diagnostic criteria, we report a 70-year-old woman who was brought to the emergency room after the acute onset of cognitive impairment, altered mental status, and choreoathetoid movemen

Autoimmune limbic encephalitis presenting as relapsing psychosis.

A 34-year-old woman with a history of relapsing psychosis presented with a 15-month history of impassivity and social withdrawal associated with cognitive impairment. The subsequent recurrence of psychomotor agitation, auditory hallucinations and delusional thinking resulted in an emergency admission under psychiatric services. Initial investigations, including MRI of the brain and cerebrospinal fluid studies were unremarkable and she was treated for a primary psychiatric disorder. The diagnosis of autoimmune limbic encephalitis was established after further investigations revealed the presenc
