[Invasion of the chest wall in primary lung neoplasms].

The authors analyse a series of 5 patients who underwent pulmonary and parietal resection between 1990 and 1993 due to non.microcytoma bronchogenic carcinoma with invasion of the thoracic wall. The patients comprised four men and one woman aged between 45 and 69 years old. Thoracic pain was present in two patients. Pulmonary resection with extrapleural stripping was performed in two patients whereas a block resection from one to five ribs and the corresponding intercostal spaces was performed in the other three patients. The authors' approach is not to perform these operations according to rig

Axillary-subclavian vein occlusion in patients with lung neoplasms.

Twelve patients with pulmonary neoplasms treated at the Fox Chase Cancer Center were found to have a syndrome of axillary-subclavian vein occlusion. Ten patients had non-small-cell lung carcinoma, one had small cell carcinoma, and one had mesothelioma. In eight patients, this vascular syndrome developed as a consequence of progressive or metastatic recurrent disease, while in four patients it presaged the appearance of the initial malignant disease. Axillary-subclavian vein occlusion should be easily differentiated from the superior vena cava syndrome. Treatment with anticoagulation therapy in

Unusual sarcomatoid neoplasm of the lung suggesting a myofibrosarcoma.

Myofibrosarcoma is a rare neoplasm that occurs mainly in the head and neck region and extremities of middle-aged patients. It often appears as a low-grade sarcoma and rarely metastasizes. We report the case of a 47-year-old male patient with a malignant mesenchymal pulmonary tumor affecting almost the entire lower left lobe. Clinically suggestive for a lung carcinoma, the tumor showed typical features of a myofibrosarcoma. A major spindle cell component was observed being positive for smooth-muscle actin, calponin, and vimentin, while stainings for desmin, h-caldesmon, alkaline phosphatase (AL

Peripheral intrapulmonary lipoma: a rare lung neoplasm.

Lipomas are common benign tumours, but intrathoracic lipomas are rare and peripheral lung lipomas exceptionally rare. Seven cases--all in men--have been described in the world literature, diagnosed after thoracotomy and excision. We report a case of a peripheral intrapulmonary lipoma in a woman presenting as an opacity on a routine chest radiograph. The CT characteristics and the finding of the same lesion on reviewing a barium enema film from 12 years earlier allowed a confident diagnosis, avoiding the need for surgical excision. This is the first reported case of peripheral lung lipoma in a

Preexisting Interstitial Lung Disease and Lung Injury Associated with Irinotecan in Patients with Neoplasms.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The aim of this study was to reveal risk factors for lung injury following irinotecan administration for the treatment of neoplasms. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study included 204 patients who received irinotecan from October 2005 to November 2014 and had evaluable chest CT images before initiation of irinotecan. RESULTS: Six (2.9%) patients developed lung injury and, of these, 2 had preexisting interstitial lung disease (pre-ILD). The frequency of lung injury in patients with pre-ILD was 11% (2 of 19) while that in patients without pre-ILD was 2.2%. Risk factor analysis for t

Clinical utility of molecular profiling in rare lung neuroendocrine neoplasms.

Rare lung neuroendocrine neoplasms (LNENs), including pulmonary carcinoids and large-cell neuroendocrine carcinomas (LCNEC), are heterogeneous tumors. Current World Health Organization (WHO) classification primarily relies on morphological features, leading to important inter-observer variability and sub-optimal prognostic accuracy. This review highlights the clinical utility of molecular profiling to overcome these diagnostic and prognostic challenges. Recent multi-omics studies have demonstrated that pulmonary carcinoids are not a uniform entity but comprise distinct molecular subgroups (A1,

Endobronchial angioleiomyoma: Diagnostic difficulties of a rare lung neoplasm.

Angioleiomyoma is a benign soft-tissue tumor that rarely develops in the respiratory tract. Here, we report a case of a 51-year-old female with an angioleiomyoma developed in the left lobar bronchial branch and extended to the left principal bronchus, causing nonspecific symptoms, and not visible on the chest X-ray examination. The suspected diagnosis was established by high-resolution computed tomography and confirmed by the histological evaluation of the endoscopically removed lesion.

[Sarcoid reaction in patients with lung neoplasm--personal experiments].

In two cases histological examination of the lymph nodes excised during mediastinoscopy showed non-caseous epithelioid granulomas. In one patient with hilar lymphadenopathy sarcoidosis was misdiagnosed. One-year later progression of lesions in lungs was found and adenocarcinoma was diagnosed. In second patient with tumour in chest x-ray examination after misdiagnosed sarcoidosis thoracotomy was done and histological examination of samples from tumour showed nonsmall cell lung cancer. In both carcinomatous cases sarcoid reaction was recognised.

Pneumothorax as a complication of percutaneous radiofrequency ablation for lung neoplasms.

PURPOSE: The present study was performed to determine the frequency of the complication of pneumothorax after radiofrequency (RF) ablation for lung neoplasms and risk factors affecting such pneumothoraces. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was based on 129 consecutive sessions of percutaneous RF ablation of lung neoplasms under real-time computed tomographic fluoroscopic guidance performed in a single institution between May 2003 and November 2005 in 41 patients (17 women, 24 men; mean age, 63 years; age range, 29-82 y). Correlation was determined between the incidence of pneumothorax after RF…

[Thymidine kinase as a biological marker in neoplasms of the lung and mediastinum].

Thymidine kinase (TK) is a biological marker recently used in diagnosis and monitoring of pulmonary and mediastinal malignant neoplasms. Authors report more recent clinical evidences of literature and, in the meanwhile, they report their personal experiences about a 20 patients group suffering of lung cancer and Hodgkin disease. Their study demonstrates a good sensitivity of TK as biological marker of SCLC and a lower sensitivity in case of NSCLC and Hodgkin disease. It has been possible to contribute to establishment of normal range values, on account of 10 healthy volunteer group blood sampl

Metachronous Pulmonary Neoplasms in Lung Transplantation-When They Arise in the Donor Lung: A Case Report.

Lung cancer (LC) is uncommon among lung transplant recipients, being most often described in the native lung of single-lung transplant recipients. Its appearance in the transplanted lung is a very uncommon phenomenon, in which donor and recipient factors appear to be involved. We present a case of 2 distinct metachronous lung neoplasms diagnosed in the transplanted lung of a non-smoker patient with progressive massive silicosis (PMS), who underwent left unipulmonary transplantation at 39 years. The donor was a smoker and thoracic computed tomography (CT) performed before the organ collection s…

The diagnostic role of transbronchial lung cryobiopsy in inflammatory myeloid neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory myeloid neoplasms(IMN), including Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) and Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD),may require histological confirmation. Surgical lung biopsy(SLB) is the traditional diagnostic standard but carries notable morbidity. Transbronchial lung cryobiopsy(TBLC) has emerged as a less invasive alternative, though its role in IMN remains insufficiently defined. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients diagnosed with pulmonary IMN between 2014 and 2025 who underwent TBLC or SLB. Clinical, radiological, histopathological, and molecular data were collecte
