Arteriovenous malformation of the maxilla.

The highly vascular nature of the head and neck area provides a particularly enhanced challenge to the head and neck surgeon when a vascular lesion is encountered. Vascular malformations in this area are classified according to the microanatomical architecture and clinical appearance of the lesion. Although bleeding is a common presentation with vascular malformations, other local and systemic problems may be associated with this problem. An unusual case of an arteriovenous malformation of the ethmoid and maxillary sinuses which caused persistent and recurrent epistaxis is presented. A review …

Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma of maxilla.

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), a malignant neoplasm of skeletal muscle origin, is the most common soft tissue sarcoma seen in childhood and adolescence. The most frequent site is the head and neck accounting for 40% of all cases and other involved sites are genitourinary tract, retroperitoneum, and to a lesser extent, the extremities. RMS is relatively uncommon in the oral cavity and the involvement of the jaws is extremely rare. Here, we report a case of 50-year-old female with oral RMS involving maxillary alveolar region with clinical, radiological, histopathological and immunohistochemical finding…

Cholesterol granuloma of the maxilla.

Intra-osseous cholesterol granuloma (CG) is a rare and benign lesion. Very few cases of CG of the jaws have been described in the literature. CG of the jaws seems to be due to the accumulation of cholesterol of hematogenous origin in odontogenic cysts. We report on one case of CG of the maxilla treated by surgical enucleation in a 46-year-old man who presented an asymptomatic swelling of the maxilla.

Recurrent osteoblastoma of the maxilla.

Osteoblastoma is a benign neoplasm which commonly occurs in the vertebral column and long bones. The tumour grows slowly and rarely recurs after surgery. This report presents the clinicopathological and radiological findings of a case of recurrent osteoblastoma in the maxilla. A 7-year-old male patient visited our department with chief complaints of left facial swelling and pain. A panoramic radiograph showed a homogeneous radio-opaque expansile lesion in the left maxilla. The lesion was thought to be fibrous dysplasia and the patient underwent a surgical excision using the Caldwell-Luc proced…

Reconstruction of the midface and maxilla.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review all pertinent topics related to midface and maxillary reconstruction including current classification schemes and reconstructive techniques. RECENT FINDINGS: The maxilla represents the functional and aesthetic cornerstone of the midface region. Defects in this area represent a unique challenge to the reconstructive surgeon as the complex anatomy of this area can be challenging to repair and reconstruct. The current indications as well as advantages and disadvantages of different reconstructive approaches are reviewed here in order to provide reconstructive surgeon…

Cysts of the mandible and maxilla.

Mandibular and maxillary cysts originate from elements of the teeth (odontogenic), or from epithelial remnants trapped in fusion lines during development (nonodontogenic). Both types can be clinically asymptomatic and must be treated surgically. The specific diagnosis of a jaw cyst and its recurrence depends upon the anatomical location, the radiographic appearance, and the pathological diagnosis.
