BACKGROUND: Maxillary sinus mucoceles are relatively rare among all paranasal sinus mucoceles. With the introduction of endoscopic sinus surgical techniques, rhinologic surgeons prefer transnasal endoscopic management of sinus mucoceles. The aim of this study is to describe the clinical presentation of maxillary sinus mucoceles and to establish the efficacy of endoscopic management of sinus mucoceles.
METHODS: Between 2003 and 2005, 14 patients underwent endoscopic sinus surgery for maxillary sinus mucocele. The presenting sign and symptoms, radiological findings, surgical management and need…

BACKGROUND: Myxofibrosarcoma (MFS) is a common sarcoma in the extremities of older individuals but is extremely uncommon in the head and nec … of severe left facial pain and left eye pain. Imaging demonstrates significant right and left-sided maxillary sinus opacification with destruction of the left maxillary sinus as well as the left medial and inferior orbital walls.
RESULTS: Histopathologic examination revealed spindle and stellate tumor cells of variable cellularity in myxoid stroma with cellular …

Leiomyosarcoma is a malignant smooth-muscle tumour that has a predilection for the gastrointestinal and female genital tract. It is locally fast-spreading and highly aggressive, and the prognosis is poor. We report a rare case of leiomyosarcoma of the maxilla in a patient who sought treatment for maxillary swelling, nasal obstruction with no epistaxis, orbital involvement or cervical lymph node metastasis. The patient underwent subtotal maxillectomy followed by radiotherapy. At present, he is symptom free with no recurrence and under regular follow up.

We experienced the case of a patient who had a foreign body in the maxillary sinus. The foreign body was an arrow accidentally triggered by the patient while fishing. The foreign body was removed via the Caldwell-Luc approach.

BACKGROUND: Mucocoele is histopathologically benign, cystic change of paranasal sinuses filled with mucoid contents, which with its growth is pressuring and destroying local bone walls. In only 3% of the cases it can be localized in maxillary sinuses. Etiology is unknown. Pyocoele develops by secondary infection.
CASE REPORT: The male patient was 21 years old. His symptoms were runny nose with thick contents and heavy breathing on the right side of the nose, headaches, as well as the swelling of the right cheek. During clinical examination, the expansive change was found. It was completely cl…

BACKGROUND: Osteoma of the paranasal sinuses is a rare and benign entity that develops slowly. If they occur, locations within the frontal sinus and ethmoid cells are more frequent, whereas osteomas in the sphenoid or maxillary sinus are very rare.
CASE: We report on a 25-year old female patient presenting with a bony mass in the right maxillary sinus. A standard external approach using a modified Caldwell-Luc procedure was successfully employed as endoscopic endonasal surgery was limited by the size of the bony lesion.
CONCLUSIONS: Trauma or infection are often suggested as an etiologic fac…

Though haemangioma of nose is a common tumor, those arising from the paranasal sinuses are not very common. Very few cases have been reported. Because of its rarity under the backdrop of existing literature we are reporting our present case.

A case report is presented involving the endodontic retreatment of a maxillary second molar associated with a sinus radiopacity. Disappearance of sinus pathosis occurred within 6 days after root canal debridement. A direct relationship between apical pathosis and a pseudocyst of the maxillary sinus is suggested. Thirteen-month recall shows no recurrence.

Cholesteatoma of the maxillary sinus, also known as keratoma, primary epidermoid tumor, epidermoid cyst, and keratocyst, is a rare entity, with a clinical presentation and radiologic findings that are difficult to distinguish from those of malignancy. We report a case of cholesteatoma of the maxillary antrum that occurred in a 12-year-old boy without any history of predisposing factors. Multiple theories of pathogenesis have been proposed throughout history; currently there are two accepted ones. We discuss these theories and present, along with the differential diagnosis, a review of the lite…

The term mucocele designates a cyst developing from a sinus mucosa, generally the frontal and/or ethmoidal sinuses. They present clinically as a benign tumor, and their diagnosis and treatment is usually simple. Maxillary sinus localizations are exceptional, however, and raise numerous problems in daily practice. Three cases of maxillary sinus mucoceles are reported.

We describe a rare case of chromoblastomycosis of the maxillary sinus. Biopsy specimens from the sinus have characteristic features under light microscopy. The prognosis after appropriate treatment is good and involved surgical excision for primary-stage infection and chemotherapy with amphotericin B and 5-fluorocytosine for advanced-stage disease. The clinical possibility of severe fungal infection in the head and neck region is discussed.
