Mebendazole, a new broad-spectrum anthelmintic, was used to treat patients with nematode infections--ascariasis, trichuriasis and hookworm. The dosage for adults was 100 mg twice daily for 3 days and for children, 50 mg twice daily for 3 days. Pretreatment and post-treatment egg counts on stool specimens showed that after mebendazole there was a reduction of over 99% in egg count per gram of stool in all three types of infection. The overall cure rates for the infections were as follows: Ascaris lumbricoides, 86.8% (59/68); Trichuris trichiura, 86.0% (37/43); and hookworm, 85.7% (24/28). The d…

Mebendazole was highly effective against the helminth parasite Trichinella spiralis in mice subjected to a 3-day course of treatment during the invasive and encystment phases of experimental trichinellosis. When treatment began either 2 or 4 weeks after the mice were inoculated with parasites, the number of larvae developing in the host musculature was greatly reduced by twice-daily oral administration of 3.125, 6.25, or 12.5 milligrams of mebendazole per kilogram of body weight.

A comparative biochemical study of the effects of mebendazole and Isoprinosine used separately or associated was conducted in six-month old gerbils infected three months ago by Echinococcus multilocularis metacestodes. Mebendazole treatment induced a decrease of glucose (81%) whereas Isoprinosine increased the glucose uptake in the parasite. The combination of the two drugs led to a decrease of about 40% of the glucose concentration. The specific activities of alkaline and acid phosphatases were also modified. Isoprinosine seemed more effective when used alone than associated with mebendazole …

Mebendazole was highly effective against the helminth parasite Trichinella spiralis in mice subjected to a 3-day course of treatment during the enteral phase of experimental trichinellosis. When treatment began 72 hr after the mice were inoculated with parasites, the number of adult worms recovered from the host intestine was greatly reduced by twice-daily oral administration of 7.5 mg of mebendazole per kilogram of body weight.

Thirty-six hospitalized Thais (21 males, 15 females, 9 to 63 years of age) with Opisthorchis viverrini infection were treated with mebendazole in dosages of 20 mg/kg body weight for 4 weeks and 30 mg/kg body weight for 3 or 4 weeks. The drug was found to be effective when given in dosages of 30 mg/kg body weight for 3 to 4 weeks only a few eggs being found in the stool of one of 27 persons at 3 or 4 weeks post-treatment. In follow-up examination at 6 months, only two of 15 persons available were positive. These could have been reinfection, however. Side effects were essentially absent, except …
