Inhibition of pressor responses induced by electrical stimulation of the mesencephalon by vasopressin and oxytocin.

Receptors for vasopressin are present in blood vessels, kidney and the brain. Earlier studies indicated that the memory and learning effects of vasopressin are exerted via receptor sites in the brain and that the classical hormonal effects in the periphery can be dissociated in the molecule from the central action. Vasopressin also affects blood pressure regulation. Arg8-vasopressin (AVP) and oxytocin upon intracerebroventricular administration reduced the pressor response elicited by electrical stimulation of the rat mesencephalic reticular formation. Desglycinamide-AVP also exerted this effe

β-catenin is required in the neural crest and mesencephalon for pituitary gland organogenesis.

BACKGROUND: The pituitary gland is a highly vascularized tissue that requires coordinated interactions between the neural ectoderm, oral ect … red for neural crest development. The Wnt1-cre is active in the neural ectoderm, principally in the mesencephalon, but also in the posterior diencephalon. Loss of β-catenin in this domain causes a rostral shift in the ventral diencephalon, including the pituitary organizer, resulting in pituitary dysmorphology. The neural crest deficient embryos have abnormally …

Cell surface molecules (NCAM and L1) in intrastriatal transplants of embryonic mesencephalon in rats.

Cell surface molecules, NCAM and L1, reported to have a role in synaptogenesis, growth and fasciculation of the neurites in the brain, were traced in the embryonic nigral transplants in the host striatum of adult rats. Substantia nigra of five, 15 and 25 postnatal days were also examined for the same molecules. Tyrosine hydroxylase label was used as a marker to localize the nigral neurons and glial fibrillary acidic protein to detect if glial scar present. In the control as well as transplants large neurons had expressed tyrosine hydroxylase. By 15th postnatal day tyrosine hydroxylase neurons

Pure downgaze palsy from isolated infarction of the left paramedian thalamic-mesencephalon junction.

A 65-years-old female was hospitalized 24 h after experiencing the sudden onset of subjective reduction in visual acuity and hypersomnia. On admission to the neurological ward, she presented isolated downgaze palsy. A Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the brain disclosed a discrete, ovalar hyperintensity involving the left paramedian thalamic-mesencephalon junction. The lesion was consistent with infarction. Isolated downgaze palsy has been described in thrombosis of Artery of Percheron leading to infarction of bilateral paramedian thalami along with structures from the mesencephalic-diencephalic …

Preferential expression of superoxide dismutase messenger RNA in melanized neurons in human mesencephalon.

The copper-zinc-dependent superoxide dismutase messenger RNA expression was studied at cellular level by in situ hybridization, using a 35S-labelled complementary DNA probe homologous to human copper-zinc-dependent superoxide dismutase messenger RNA, in the dopaminergic neuron-containing areas of the human mesencephalon (the substantia nigra pars compacta, ventral tegmental area, central gray substance and peri- and retrorubral region corresponding to catecholaminergic cell group A8). The autoradiographic labelling signal was localized in neurons. No detectable hybridization signal could be fo…

Otx2 cell-autonomously determines dorsal mesencephalon versus cerebellum fate independently of isthmic organizing activity.

During embryonic development, the rostral neuroectoderm is regionalized into broad areas that are subsequently subdivided into progenitor compartments with specialized identity and fate. These events are controlled by signals emitted by organizing centers and interpreted by target progenitors, which activate superimposing waves of intrinsic factors restricting their identity and fate. The transcription factor Otx2 plays a crucial role in mesencephalic development by positioning the midbrain-hindbrain boundary (MHB) and its organizing activity. Here, we investigated whether Otx2 is cell-autonom

Presynaptic muscarinic (M3) receptors reduce excitatory transmission in dopamine neurons of the rat mesencephalon.

The effects of carbachol (0.01-30 microM) and muscarine (10-30 microM) on the excitatory synaptic potentials were studied using conventional intracellular recordings from dopaminergic neurons in rat mesencephalic slices. Both muscarinic agonists reversibly reduced the excitatory synaptic potentials, evoked by local electrical stimulation. The EC50 for carbachol was determined to be 4.5 microM. The maximal degree of the excitatory synaptic potentials suppression caused by carbachol and muscarine was around 40% of control. This suppression was completely blocked by the non-specific muscarinic an

Locus coeruleus promotes survival of dopamine neurons in ventral mesencephalon. An in oculo grafting study.

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder where dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra of ventral mesencephalon undergo degeneration. In addition to the loss of dopamine neurons, noradrenaline neurons in the locus coeruleus degenerate, actually to a higher extent than the dopamine neurons. The interaction between these two nuclei is yet not fully known, hence this study was undertaken to investigate the role of locus coeruleus during development of dopamine neurons utilizing the intraocular grafting model. Fetal ventral mesencephalon and locus coeruleus were implanted either as sin…

A comparative study of phosphatases in the rhombencephalon and mesencephalon of fresh water turtle (Lissemys punctata granosa).

The study deals with the histoenzymological architecture of the rhomencephalon and mesencephalon of a fresh water turtle. Attempt has been made to see the location of phosphatases (acid and alkaline phosphatases, 5-nucleotidase, adenosine triphosphatase) in the different constituents of these brain areas. The distribution of acid phosphatase is similar to Nissl staining, hence the enzyme has been used as a marker to differentiate various nuclei in the different brain areas. Moreover, the concentration of acid phosphatase is higher in large neurons like that of Nissl substance and, therefore, a…

A morphometric study of the dopamine-containing cell groups in the mesencephalon of normals, Parkinson patients, and schizophrenics.

A quantitative study of the melanin-containing dopaminergic neurons of the nigrostriatal system (A 9) and of the mesolimbic system (A 10) was carried out on Nissl-stained serial sections of nine normal brains, six age-matched brains of schizophrenics, five brains of paralysis agitans, and six brains of postencephalitic parkinsonism. By contrast with most laboratory animals the A 10 cell group is not well developed in the human brain. Both in Parkinson's disease with a known hypoactivity of dopamine neurons and in schizophrenia with a postulated hyperfunction of these systems, pathological alte
